History

Established in 2003.

Physical Element is a well curated boutique that believes art, architecture and fashion are not mutually exclusive. Form and function are paramount considerations in proprietress’ Jo Carter’s selections, with the majority of finds being easy care and travel friendly.

Locally owned and operated, Physical Element lives in the heart of the Pearl District offering modern, cerebral clothing with a nod to the avant-​garde.

Business Owner

Trained in the arts and in fashion, I’ve been in the «business» for almost 30 years. Physical Element has been a true labor of love. It’s never been about labels or what celebrities are wearing– for me, it is about line, silhouette and the how the fabric feels on the body. Clothing should reflect the personality and the uniqueness of the woman.

Growing up as a military ‘brat’ afforded me the opportunity to live all over the country and the world. This experience imprinted an appreciation of European and Japanese aesthetics that are reflected in how garments are designed and cut, and therefore selected in our special little boutique.
