This place has changed SO MUCH. I miss the old Portico. I miss the gorgeous furniture that used to sit in the main room. I miss the craftsmanship of the tables. We got our dining table from Portico and we love it. We also got some artwork from there in the past.
I want to support local businesses but the new design of the place reeks. Hopefully the influx of rich yuppies moving into the neighborhood will have good enough taste to purchase furniture from Portico which hopefully will scrap the clothing area.

I love Portico! My husband and I went in to look at the custom tables they make from barn wood. After talking with the owner (who never made us feel rushed or pressured to buy) and getting to see the tables that were being made in the back of the store, we ordered a table. Portico doesn’t disappoint. The table was made on time, and it is absolutely gorgeous. I know we’ll have it to enjoy for many years to come. Thank you, Portico!

My husband and I are looking for a reclaimed wood table with a metal base but need it just a little smaller than most we’ve come across. We’re willing to pay for what we’re hoping to find and I read and was told they do custom work with these tables. The style of the tables is sort of contemporary but the design we liked most has a little too much going on. Too busy with multiple pieces of metal going this way and that. I didn’t say this to the gentleman (owner/​designer?) but did ask if we could simplify the base a bit somehow. «No.» Could we possibly leave off an element? «No, that would be boring.» Well, I guess I’ll find another artisan to make my table! I understand you might have a vision for your art but business must be booming to turn away a sale with no openness or flexibility. Honestly, they’re not art installations.

Beautiful and quality furniture. I bought some a great plum colored couch, chair with Ottoman and mustard colored pillows 4 – 5 years which are very easy to clean and still look great. Takes abuse from dog and toddler well. The furniture is beautiful and well crafted. They also sell some consignment items. Great mix of vintage and modern which fits my style well. I wish I could afford to purchase more furniture from this store, it’s my favorite neighborhood store to buy stuff for my home. I have my eye on an amazing wool rug.

I returned from Portico on 3÷26÷2011 with a rug and two great vintage photos for $ 40. I had a great time running around with the owner.
Earlier in the month a friend purchased a GIANT Natuzzi leather sofa with a slight tear for $ 275.
This owners do an amazing job of picking and choosing their inventory. Everything is very reasonably priced.
I highly reccomend.

Fantastic shop and crafter — we’ve been Portico patrons for almost a year now, and we keep coming back. Johan and Julio — not a «couple», but they sure operate well together :) — are friendly without being pressure-​y, and helpful without pushing you into uncomfortable decisions.
They keep a very interesting, fresh and constantly-​updated inventory in the shop — the best way to describe the atmosphere is like they’re curators of the local Portland crafters and artisans, putting together a really interesting, eclectic and beautiful assortment of home-​décor, furniture and accouterments that are making it easy and not-​expensive to help me make my home look unique and fun without being trendy or impractical.
What’s been the most rewarding experience of all, however, has been commissioning custom furniture from Johan to build for unique corners of our home. Johan works with us in a very low-​key, very un-​pressured way to design pieces (a hutch and a kitchen table/​prep stand) that are beautiful, functional and very complementary to our tastes and existing décor. The hutch is built from reclaimed barnboard with a paint finish that looks like it was aging in the attic for decades, and the table is rock-​solid but elegant, cut to fit a very tight space in the kitchen and provide us both eating surface as well as comfortable prep space.
Johan sets a very high bar for himself for quality, design and look, and while his style may not be suited to the Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn set, we’re very happy and proud to have his work in our home. As for prices, his work is definitely more expensive than what you could get at Ikea, but for custom, solid, beautiful work that you’ll keep long after you toss the particle-​board junk, we’ve found Johan’s prices lower than what you’ll find in most «custom furniture» or «unique items» shops.

This is a unique little shop that is filled with weird, wonderful, and eclectic things.
We live very close to Portico and they always have such interesting things out on the sidewalk that we were finally one day drawn in. There is a mix of styles, quality, old, new, hand-​crafted, and price ranges in here. There are a lot of whimsical pieces, and some real finds. Some things are reclaimed (used) and some are hand-​crafted art pieces (furniture, home and garden décor). To date we have purchased the following things off the floor in the shop: a used area rug in amazing condition of crewelwork wool; a used slender bamboo etarge; a handmade metal pig (whimsical sculpture); and a beautiful hall mirror made from a local artist out of reclaimed wood. In addition to these things we have also had two custom furniture pieces made by Johan Meijer. One piece he made for us is based on a large hutch designed to look like this old, albeit falling apart, shelving unit that the store had no intention of selling; they were using it to display merchandise. It caught my eye because the scale and style of it was so perfect for our home. The person in the front of the store, Julio, was so attentive — without being «salesy» –and quickly picked up on my interest in it. He brought to my attention to the fact that they could likely make a new (not falling apart) one for me and he introduced me to Johan Meijer. After meeting Johan I knew my partner would likely be very into not only giving our business to someone local, but also into giving our business to Johan (and Julio) specifically. Johan did an amazing job on the hutch, which he made out of reclaimed Douglas fir and barn boards. He worked with a paint color and type of finish we wanted but we made sure to leave him some artistic license, and we were so very glad we did. The piece exceeded our expectations.
After such a wonderful experience we decided to have Johan also make our kitchen table/​island. My partner and I had very specific ideas of size/​shape/​dimension, but not being knowledgeable about how furniture is made we soon realized the table presented a challenge. Johan was so patient explaining everything to us while making suggestions and working up a design that would fit into our wants and needs — while keeping it safe and making it sturdy and able to last — we were once again very impressed. We brought the table home just last night and are so very thrilled with it I thought it was time to write up this review.
To the people commenting about high prices I would have to emphatically disagree. I always feel things are very fairly and competitively priced at Portico (Shop around a little and also stop expecting artists to give away their hard work for pennies.). The quality of the hand-​crafted pieces is absolutely outstanding. I feel we got an exceptional price on the two custom pieces made by Johan in particular. I’ve comparison shopped and you just can’t beat the quality to price ratio. I also think they have a great range of prices in the shop so any budget could shop there and come away with something unique. Portico also is very good about getting new things in and having new pieces made by Johan out on the floor. It makes it worthwhile to stop in every now and again; there is always something new to see. We are so thrilled this is just down the street! It is a great shop run by good people.

I love this store. I think the prices are actually pretty reasonable. People don’t seem to understand that yes, you may be able to find something cheaper online, but that’s the price you pay for being able to go in, sit on it, look at it in 3-​D, and have them showcase it in a physical space that costs them money. Sheesh. You know, Powells costs more than Amazon.
ANyway, off the soapbox, the décor here is very aligned with my preferences; basically, the tasteful side of a gay man. The furniture prices are very reasonable considering the quality and contemporary style. I bought a HUGE painting here for $ 15. Fifteen dollars! I thought it said 75 up on the wall, they took it down for me, and it was fifteen. Score.
Basically, this is the store I have to avoid if I want to stay in budget. But it’s the first place I wander to when it’s time to upgrade my nest…

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all about green & while I hate to say it if this is what green consumerism in PDX is about, sustainable has just become unsustainable.
While on pooch patrol we’ve been by many times & after checking out their webpage which emphasizes their focus on reclaimed wood furniture & custom sofas/​seating made here in the Pacific Northwest how could I not check out this cool, local place in the flesh? And truly, the concept is cool because how much planned obsolescence Ikea-​esque furniture can the landfills take?
The first thing that drew me in were the molded bamboo chair & ottoman on the sidewalk with their clean modern lines & organic colors. All for a whopping $ 395 (*cough* $ 100 more expensive than an online wholesaler including shipping *cough*). Next I ogled the custom built tables of reclaimed Douglas fir which were mighty purty & upwards of $ 300 for a four seater table sans seats. The pièce de résistance however, was the custom built platform bed from reclaimed Doug fir with a storage headboard & customizable floor height. $ 999 for a queen frame.
I’m not ignoring the craftsmanship & far be it for me to deny anyone a living wage but this brand of green consumerism is definitely not for the masses. I suspect that even before the financial meltdown it wasn’t for most of us with excess disposable income. Which leads me to two things I never thought I would endorse:
1) Kermit’s right, it’s not easy being green.
2) Craigslist may just very well be the true bastion of the eco-​movement made real for you & me.

Portico is chock full of a lot of eclectic merchandise that I enjoy browsing but would probably never buy, unless I was in the market for a specific piece of furniture or some kind of room accessory. It’s fun to browse and I’d recommend it for that person on your list with slightly off-​the-​wall taste.

Good place to shop if you are looking for large pieces of furniture, otherwise the small stuff can get a bit tacky.
