Description

Specialties

For 25 years, Portland Center Stage has inspired our community by bringing stories to life in unexpected ways. Founded in 1988, we are the city’s leading professional theater and one of the 20 largest regional theater companies in the U.S. Each season we produce a blend of classical, contemporary and première works, as well as our annual playwrights festival, JAW. In our home at the Gerding Theater at the Armory we also offer a variety of education and outreach programs, including classes, workshops and partnerships with organizations throughout the Portland area.

History

Established in 1988.

PCS began as OSF Portland, the northern sibling of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. After years of planning and preparation, the company was successfully launched on November 12, 1988.

In September 1993, after five successful seasons, the Festival approved a recommendation that the Portland branch become an independent theater company, starting with the 1994 – 1995 season.

Artistic Director Chris Coleman joined PCS in 1999, with the hope of bringing even bolder work to the our stage and connecting in a more vital way with the community.

Throughout the next few years, the vision of a new home for PCS began to emerge. That vision became a reality when, in 2006, we moved into our new home in The Gerding Theater at the Armory. Built in the historic Portland Armory, the new facility houses a 599-seat main stage and a 200-seat black box theater.

This year we celebrate our 25th anniversary season! We look forward to an exciting, boundary-pushing and galvanizing future.
