Portland Hostel Hawthorne District

A very social hostel with decent pricings. I was able to stay in the co-​ed 6 bedroom dorm for ~$ 25/​night, and they have a 24 hour cancellation policy which is very nice.
They provide not only cereal/​oatmeal for breakfast every morning, but have a bunch of cooking supplies that you can use to make your own breakfast. There’s always a plethora of leftovers on the top shelf of the fridge as well, so you can scrounge through there if you really need something to eat haha.
The Netflix room is this living room area they have with Netflix/​amazon prime/​a few other show-​streaming services, so if you are ever looking for something to do during some downtime, that’s always a choice as well!

The hostel was in a fun part of town and the place was small (it’s in a larger older style house)
I did not like the fact I could not have an Oregon craft ipa on their beautiful patio — no alcohol allowed in the lovely hostels property
I also felt the room in the basement has a mold or mildew problem because I could not stop sneezing
The NW hostel on the other side of the river is much more enjoyable and fun

Unfortunately there aren’t too many hostels in Portland which makes it hard too compare in the area. Not sure why? This is a very chill hostel though. Clean and safe. It’s In a really great area and Is good distance to lots of cool stuff. Just don’t expect to hang with people from the hostel. Their events are more of a «check it out on your own» kind of thing. Nice that they have bikes for rent b/​c that really is the best way to get around. Make sure to book way in advance b/​c they do fill up quick. Otherwise pretty nice hostel.

It’s a hostel, so everything is very basic. You’ve got your set of clean sheets, a bed and a full kitchen to cook in. If you’re traveling on a budget, this is perfect. You also get to meet some really interesting folks! Staff is chill, just make sure to read the rules.

Great place to rest. Yes, true the staff can come off as a bit dismissive to travelers but the people you meet are great! There seemed to be a good mix of people traveling from outside Oregon and the U.S. and those that lived outside of Portland and came into town to see a show/​activity and needed somewhere to sleep.
Stayed in the guys dorm in the basement and fairly clean overall. You are provided with clean sheets and towel for your stay, but the comforter gets used by others (probably washed once or twice a month).
It is located in a great area, close to a Safeway supermarket and many bars and restaurants within walking distance. You can find parking alongside the streets fairly easy.
There are lockers available, but never had to use one and didn’t hear about any thing going missing.

Stayed here for a night and loved the ambiance and the price. Really environmentally conscious and proactive (ex. use collected rainwater in their toilets), fun activities (hosted a beer tasting from a local brewer), and friendly staff. Booking the room and checking in and out were quick and painless, as well. Stayed in the female dorm by the kitchen (bunk beds) and was pleased by the lack of bed bugs and cleanliness of the room.
Lots of quirky travelers, friendly vibes, spacious kitchen and dining area, as well as a outdoor patio which was lovely for late night talks.

The building itself is nice, the beds are just ok. However, the staff (both morning and evening staff) was rude and dismissive. All together, a disappointing experience. We left as soon as we possibly could.

I stayed here for a few nights over the weekend, completely unplanned, and it worked out! There happened to be cancellations the few days I needed a bed. The guests were an even mix of international and US. Lots of fun but not super great camaraderie as I’ve had some other places. All the usual amenities you would expect from a hostel. They’re all about being sustainable and using rainwater to flush the toilets and water the garden and for that I give them 5 stars.

I don’t understand how you can give this place less than four stars.
The staff was amazing and greeted us kindly the moment we stepped in. Everything is provided for you. Beds are neat and clean, towels with no extra charge. Totally affordable.
I came here in May and it was filled with mostly young people, majority Europeans (I realize since they get out of school early!) If you are 35+ be aware that you may be one of the older members. But the guests here were lovely and tend to be more liberal, open-​minded folk. What do you expect out of a hostel from Portland?
Rentable bikes, the most ecofriendly house I’ve ever seen in my life, and the entire homey personal vibe you get from Portland businesses.
I love it. I’m back home in LA, but when I close my eyes, it’ll be this hostel that I wish that I was still living at. I left my heart in Portland, and this hostel is where it’s at.

I traveled to Portland alone during the legendary blizzard this February. A nightmarish couch-​surfing experience found me shivering and miserable at the door to the Hawthorne Hostel.
Arriving in a warm lodge with complimentary tea and being handed a cozy duvet, I have never been more grateful for creature comforts in a faraway place. All of the staff were courteous if not friendly, and prioritized the guests regardless of what might have been going on in their lives.
These guys even shipped my sunglasses back to me in New York after I lost them there!
Perfect location, you’ll meet a real cast of characters no matter when you visit, and free pancakes /​coffee /​tea. Bless this little haven on Hawthorne.

Oy. This hostel.
Positives first: super eco-​conscious, bikes to rent at reasonable price, clean, Hawthorne-​esque vibe (flying unicorns and three-​eyed octopus mural: check plus), kitchen, free coffee, free pancake mix, staff was perfectly helpful, beds were fine.
Negatives: Our room (which their web booking assigned us to) was in the basement and we couldn’t choose beds (I really don’t like top bunks). I would like to be able to choose the dorm that I stay in (probably you can do this if you call, so if you don’t want to end up the depressing basement, I recommend that).
Also…BF and I were there over MLK day weekend and the crowd was kind of depressing in that there were a large number of people visiting for the night from elsewhere in PacNW and using the place as a crash pad so they could go out party, then come back super drunk to the hostel (not so much traveling and exploring Portland). Also, there was a mentally ill woman staying there who was pretty much always on the phone leaving crazy person messages to the British Consulate in Vancouver requesting an audience with the ambassador, asylum, and a med evacuation. Admittedly, she was kind of hilarious and clearly the other guests and staff were all kind of perturbed/​confused as to what to do with her… but um… yeah just food for thought about who might end up at this place if you do stay.

Friendly staff. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Free pancake mix, coffee, and tea. Beds are clean and comfortable.
What more can you ask for in a hostel?

Avoid the basement room aka St. Helens. Its dingy and dark like a casino so you can’t quite tell what hour of the day it is. Otherwise the hostel is full of interesting people who have set out on their own little missions across the wonderful city of Portland. The staff are pretty chilled out but its definitely not a party hostel. Personally I love the location it’s only a 20 or so minute walk to downtown or you can catch bus 14 which gets you to downtown in about 5 minutes.

It’s fine, it’s what you’d expect from a hostel. One thing is ease have more light than just that blaring ceiling one in the womens dorm. It’s either that or dark and of course at a hostel people come in late and turn on the light. The people are nice though which makes for the four stars.

I will say it’s a-​ok. You must come with an open mind. I will say that. Also, probably more popular amongst the younger crowd. I was in a pinch and booked my accommodation on the road and happened to get the last bed in the women’s dorm.
So, there are shared dormitories that sleep 8. You get there, they issue you sheets and you can borrow a towel for $ 1. You get the code to the front door and to your dorm (there’s a couple private rooms… basically it’s a large house converted). There are comforters on the beds already and you’re assigned a bed, which is nice since you don’t have to fight first come first serve for beds. I got a lower bunk, which was great since having to climb up and down the ladder in the dark it sucks.
Anyways, there are three bathrooms. I never did see the upstairs ones because they were always full. There were lots of people and the neighborhood was definitely a younger crowd neighborhood. Close to lots of cool restaurants and stuff.
Downstairs bathroom has a separate shower with a little curtain thing you pull across and lock and then sink and toilet in another room that’s not quite a private room.
Kitchen is fully stocked with all you need including stove and fridges so you can have food on hand to cook. Bring a lock so you can get a locker for free to store your belongings when you’re gone.
No a/​c in the building so be prepared to be warm. Women’s dorm smelled like BO sadly. But otherwise, the place was very clean and the beds were comfy. Wasn’t too hard to sleep but lights didn’t go off til like midnight.
Porch was amazing and there was kitty on it that I hung out with.
Probably not my type of place, so maybe take my review with a grain of salt if you’re a person that likes hostels. Price is decent for a bed.
TONS of on street parking for free.
I do want to say that the managers here do an impeccable job, the place is 100% sustainable, it’s really a good time if you like getting to know people or are traveling either with people or on your own. I am probably not the right person for a hostel, but if you are, you could love it for sure.

My first experience with a hostel, here in the U.S. or anywhere else for that matter. Many hostel stays later, the memories of the different spaces sort of permeate together, with the exception of Portland (and Phoenix for another reason entirely).
This quaint home-​like hostel is very close to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall (where I was going) and to everything else downtown (where you may be going). Staff is extremely polite, pleasant, and helpful. Bathroom is enormous for hostel-​standards, since it is home-​sized. Price is minimal (Reserve at this site:

First thing I have to say here is that Happy is the sweetest person I have met here in Portland. In my opinion, he MAKES this place.
I like the location here. SE Hawthorne has it’s own flavor, and it offers a couple of cool bars and restaurants. So even if you stop here without a car, you can just wander down the strip and have some fun.
One thing I cannot stress enough is that they clean and clean and CLEAN here. Each time I have stayed, they have practically gotten down on their hands and knees and cleaned this place from top to bottom. The kitchen is well organized, their rules of the house are totally fine – not nazi-​ish at all. All the coffee or tea you want for fifty cents. Free domestic calls. Communal table to eat or just chill. Strong wireless signal, and encrypted! I’m not sure why other motels in Portland not only have crappy (at best) wireless signals, but they are not secure.
The house is gorgeous and gets lots of light. Very eco friendly and creates a community mind. The beds are pretty comfy and I feel very comfortable here. I am so impressed by this place that I will be recommending all of my travelling friends to stay here.

This is a great hostel. It’s in the heart of one of PDX’s best districts. Just down the street from so many restaurants, joints, shops, grocery, food cart pods… whatever you’re looking for. Just step out and head in either direction. Right across the street from a great taco joint too…
The people working there were very friendly. They keep it clean, both upstairs and down. Nice community room, clean sleeping rooms, and clean kitchen all add to it’s charm. They have a rooftop garden, which looks very nice from outside.
If you’re traveling on the cheap, or just want to stay with a more local flavor than a hotel, check this place out. You’ll enjoy your stay.

Such a lovely little hostel! It’s very eco-​friendly and community minded. All of the travelers I met during my stay there were very friendly and helpful and the staff was phenomenal. There’s a great homely feeling to the place and a lovely front porch and front room area.
Good internet access. Big kitchen. Small & limited bathrooms. Lots of parking. …best of all, it’s in my very favorite area of Portland! I can’t wait to come back and stay soon :]

Very cute, very clean, pretty good location although people made the Hawthorne area sound super awesome and we were pretty disappointed. It’s still good because you can access other areas easily as well as hop on the bus very nearby. You should know though the hostel is pretty small, the dorm sleeps 6 with a few other family rooms and private rooms. We did stay over New Years which is probably why it was so quiet although we were hoping for a more jovial atmosphere and maybe a few cute Australians to ring in the new year with. If you’re traveling through, I would definitely recommend this place.
Also, $ 1 pancake breakfasts every day and I noticed a poster for the Sunday potluck they have… very cool.
