Pro: they took all my old batteries for a(voluntary) $ 3 donation. Looks like they take any items *IF they can be recycled*. Con: they told me to smash my CFL bulb in the dumpster(where it would release toxic mercury into the environment). In case you’re wondering, it turns out Home Depot collects old CFL bulbs for safe disposal. Less convenient, but safer.

A private company providing a public service for only a recommended donation. A small one at that! Too bad it’s undercut by having Cleatus the Slack Jawed Yokel serving said public. Still beats landfilling it.

Gotta be green. Gotta be green. Gotta be green. Gotta be green. When did I turn into Rainman? When I realized how many, many recyclables are still not taken curbside or at the grocery store. But what to do? With #6 plastic and waxed food containers, I could build a replica of Pompeii in the front yard. I could have a Vesuvius party and burn it down, toga-wearing party guests fleeing through the streets. Or… I could take the unwanted items to Portland Recycling Centers. They accept everything from garden pots to computer monitors to used clothes — and mostly(not all) for FREE.
