Radish Underground is a woman’s clothing and jewelry boutique located in Downtown Portland’s West End. We specialize in Portland based independent fashion designers and smaller independent fashion lines from around the world. We have an exclusive selection of beautiful responsibly made apparel and jewelry.

History

Established in 2008.

When Radish Underground opened in 2008, we set out to be detectives, finding independent lines you can feel good about supporting: designers/​companies who give a damn about the world we live in and the people in it. Buying local is a great start, so we focus in on our Portland, OR based designers, but also believe local is everywhere and know that to truly live their dreams, small lines must reach a broader market. We want to be part of the broader network, a conduit for people in all places to find an outlet for their thoughtfully made goods. Owners Celestial Sipes and Gina Johnson grew up dancing together in the Northwest Ballet Co. in Montana and have been friends ever since. The daughters of two artists, a dancer and a musician (respectfully), they share a passion for craftsmanship and community. Together they had a vision to create a space where artists could network with one another, and the customer could experience this kind of passion and quality first hand.

Celeste S and Gina M.

Business Owner

Celeste made her way to Portland in 1996, and holds two BA’s from Lewis & Clark College, in English and Philosophy. She’s tried to be an artist, making movies, putting on film festivals, starting a clothing line, but turns out she loves math and spreadsheets. She is the acting manager, buyer and numbers gal here at Radish. Gina followed her career as a contemporary ballet dancer to Los Angeles where she was the Assistant Director and a principal dancer for Meh-​Tropolis Dance Theatre and received her BA in Dance Performance from Loyola Marymount University. Gina moved to Oregon in 2005 (and lived in Celeste’s spare room) and just over one year later, Radish Underground was born. Gina’s the big picture idea girl here at Radish.

Talk about the cutest shop! I am definitely coming back for stocking stuffers and Christmas gifts. I originally came here to hunt down some MapleXo products (Skateboard scraps turned into bottle opemers, necklaces, earrings, bangles… so awesome!) and stumbled across this little shop of joy. I highly recommend shopping here. The staff are nice and friendly and the independent designers Radish Underground has stocked here makes for a great one stop shopping experience! Super cute boutique! I could not stop oogling the rainbow colored underwear made by a New Zealand company called Thunderpants and ended up walking out with a pair. I was surprised I didn’t grab a second pair and now that I know how comfortable they are I wished I did. I see a trip back to Radish in the future for more cute accessories and more underwear.

Today I went to Radish Underground as I appreciated the great reviews for cool local jewelry and needed to purchase a nice gift for one of my sibling’s birthday. Needless to say, I walked out with her gift and for me a pair of earrings, adorable dress and a beautiful Italian scarf for my Grandmother’s upcoming birthday!
Great, stylish clothing and jewelry that hits a variety of styles. The people that manage the store are very low key, helpful and very nice. Go check it out!

There really aren’t enough words to describe just how much I love shopping at Radish. Before setting foot in there several years back, I did not like clothes shopping at all. Like, really. I didn’t understand just how much better well designed and well made clothing actually fits and flatters. This is hands down my favorite store in Portland; well, it’s my favorite store anywhere, actually. I can always find an article of clothing that I love or a gorgeous piece of beautiful, hand made jewelry. And, what makes this sweet spot extra amazing is that the Rad gals are the coolest, friendliest, funniest, and warmest gals around. Extra big props to Celeste, the owner, and the world’s most fabulous salesperson, Kyja. These ladies are bomb! One of my friends recently told me that I was developing an enviable wardrobe. I couldn’t agree more. Get yourselves on in here, people. You won’t be sorry. Promise!

It’s a cute store and mostly carries handmade clothes (no fast fashion here) with an earthy vibe (not in a hippy dippy sort of way…). They’re pricy, but they do layaway. The sales ladies have been nice and are knowledgable about the construction and origin of the clothes. The next time I need to make a clothing investment, I will be stopping here again.

Rad (X’s 4) hip & stylin gal owners of a cool boutique – hand picks designer fashions that are practical and affordable with flare or not – or Radish-​lookin – made to wear well and last longer. They prefer NW designers, i.e., PDX & Seattle and reach out to Canada, LA & New Zealand – seeking designers who care about Mother Earth too! These owners know their designers and what the garments are made with.
A very friendly small boutique where you can chit-​chat with sales and really get the scoop on what you might like to buy!
Women’s fashion’s (some eco/​friendly & organic). Some fashion statements for men too, but not currently much in store right now. Rad leather and jewelry – my wife loves her PDX leather purse she bought a year back (made well, leather is breaking in nice). I bought some organic cotton socks that feel and fit well (my feet love ‘em, been worn and washed alot and wearin well too).
It is a small store. So owners are hand selecting stuff they like and know PDX’ers go for. They been around long enough and they deserve a little love & that is what this Unilocaler is giving!

Dropped in here on a whim just as it was closing. There were two other shoppers and the sales lady. They seemed to have a good rapport going and no one was hurrying to get out of the store. It was a super laid back and positive environment. Found a couple of amazing dresses, well made in the US and Canada, with a 1950s feel.

We had accidently thrown away a great set of earings; I email the shop and Kyja was super nice in contacting the maker (local) got another set made up and overnight shipped. This company and the people are great! Totally a gem and worth shopping at!

Cute boutique selling interesting designers. I barely looked at the clothes; I was there to browse accessories. I ended up with a pretty necklace that I’ve worn several times in the few weeks I’ve had it. The saleswoman was super nice.

First time in Portland. Not a lot of time. Saw lots of places, nothing too special. Then there was this. Radish Underground. By accident, I found wonderfully unique items. It’s a charming shop with a nice gal carefully wrapping items as I choose one after another; a souvenir, a Christmas present, a gift for a friend. Artistic and cleverly curated, this is a great collection of clothing, giftry and art. Now I am taking a little Portland home.

Does it seem strange that when I see the name «Radish Underground» I think of Super Mario 2? I mean, I know that in the video game mario runs around pulling turnips, not radishes, out of the ground to chuck at unsuspecting nefarious (yet cute) creatures. But still, that connection somehow persists in my head. Maybe it’s because Radish Underground is full of all sorts of cool, cute stuff that really doesn’t require much digging — all you have to do is browse around and the radness presents itself. And I want to pull it all and chuck it in to my shopping bag.
My weird mental associations aside, Radish is a beyond rad-​ish. It’s straight up rad. These ladies stock all sorts of cool goods like boutique-​y women’s clothing, accessories (for both women and men), wallets, watches, hats, laptop covers, bags, scarves… sort of an odd collection of nothing you really need, per se, but everything you want. I’ve been in and out of this store for years (most recently for Unilocal Shops Local) and have scored a sweet locally-​made leather wallet, a laptop sleeve made from repurposed neoprene, an awesome F-​Bomb t-​shirt, and some various other goodies. I have also eyed some Pendleton wool scarves and a Goorin Bros hat or two. And the wooden watches are super sweet.
Radish is definitely the kind of place that could do some damage to my bank account, almost more for buying gifts for the ladies in my life than for myself, but that doesn’t mean I’ve been able to avoid spending some cash on myself.
Oh, and did I mention that everyone who works here is super nice? Seriously. I’ve worked retail and I know how hard it can be when dealing with the public all day. But I have the sneaking suspicion that this store attracts a higher ratio of kind people than your average chain store. It would be hard not to be in a good mood shopping here!

I have walked by this place a dozen times and only stopped in when I noticed a lot of Unilocalers were giving it a thumbs up.
Thank Unilocalers! Really dig this place. I love that everything is produced by locals and everything feels very one-​of-​a-​kind and unqiue. The jewelery keeps me coming back. Really liked a top once, but could not justify spending $ 98 on a cotton shirt with a tiny bit of lace detail.
The earrings are really the star of the show in my opinion. They feel heavy and well made. Most pairs seem to run around $ 30 to $ 60. The hats are super cute too.
The place is tiny so its near impossible to not have some sort of interaction with the staff. So far its been very nice and the employees let you browse and touch everything without looking at your like your trying to steal.

I love this store.
I loved it so much that I’m writing this review and I only left about 15 minutes ago! I’m already wearing my new hat and rings because they’re SOOO cute.
Here’s why I loved it so much…
1. I love buying local wherever I’m at and a lot of the clothes in here are locally made and/​or designed.
2. The clothes/​accessories are super cute!
3. Service was friendly, not pushy at all, and all of my questions were answered.
This is a must shop at if you’re in Portland!

I loved this shop! On a recent trip to Portland I stopped in on my way too Powell’s Books and there I met the nicest person, «Gina» who helped me. She was so nice and even helped me with directions.
Anyway the store has cool clothes from (I think) local artists and beatiful jewelry too. A must stop in when your in Portland.

Holy Hell this place is rad. I had never heard of it before and randomly ducked in, having no idea what they sold. My jaw dropped upon seeing the first jewelry display, when I spied a necklace that was a tiny light switch.
They carry unique, handmade goods, much of it re-​purposed and local, and all of it wicked cool. See photos for some examples, my fav being the «These Boobs Are Made For Walken» (as in Christopher) and the recent winner of Portland’s coolest shirt contest. The gal working greeted us enthusiastically upon entering and was so happy to tell us about each artist’s work we were admiring. She told us one of the necklaces I liked was made by one of the stop-​motion animators that worked on Coraline. Sweet!
I don’t normally buy myself jewelry outside of the $ 2, clearance bin/​Top to Bottom scale of quality, but I could not resist a pair of Betsy and Iya (
) earrings, made locally out of vintage materials. I am a kind of a postcard nerd, collecting and in a (somewhat lonely) club. These earrings are tiny gold postcards, stamped and everything. Had to buy them ($ 29).
Great assortment of clothes, baubles, tshirts, hats, cards. Really fun shop, I’ll definitely be back for gifts in the future.
