I would rate it a 3.5 star. I ordered their Bun Bo Hue. The broth was excellent! It was clean, great beef flavor and did not taste oily(compare to other places). The downside: their was no banana leaves, fresh herbs, ratio of meat to noodles, and their portion size is much smaller for the price you pay.

I went here on a Wednesday and got the spicy beef phở. It was pretty darn delicious but I don’t know if I would call if phở, the noodles were thick like spaghetti noodles and the broth didn’t taste like it had much star anise in it. That being said I still liked the food a lot. It wan’t too busy and was very clean inside. The lights are kind of bright and they had Celine Dion playing the whole time which normally I would find annoying but I thought it was really funny at the time. Definitely check it out.

This place is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. It has all of the great phở from it’s sister on 82nd with more room. Best phở on Powell without question.

Ha VL is closed at night, but fortunately this place is open. Limited menu, but the soup was very good.

Rose VL and Ha VL have cornered the Portland market on Vietnamese soup noodles — thank goodness! The broth is better than most broths I’ve tasted in SE Asia because it is made without any shortcuts(aka MSG dumping). The flavors are sublime, comforting, subtle, yet distinctive. This is a gem in a world of MSG-laden salt bombs. WELOVEYOU, Mom Ha!

I hate to be the one to give this place a mediocre review. I have to do it though. Let me start by saying that I absolutely looooove Ha VL. Like so much that I eat there every Sunday. The turmeric soup is my favorite. Last night my wife and I stopped in rose VL for a bowl of turmeric soup and a 3b(meatball bahn mi). Unfortunately for us we left displeased for two reasons: 1) bahn mi was made of different bread than we receive at Ha VL. It was still good but not as good as the original. I know, I know… Big deal right… Maybe they ran out of the normal bread and had to substitute… this leads me to my next complaint 2) THETURMERICSOUPWASCOMPLETELYDIFFERENT. The first thing we noticed was that the color was more of a clear broth with a large pool of oil on top. The next was that the noodles were white and not the yellowish orange color we usually receive. The oil on top turned out to be hot pepper oil that overtook the flavor of the soup. The meats were different and it appeared to have less in it. The soup was horrible(compared to what we hold as standard) and my wife and I left about halfway through our bowls. We won’t be going back for Turmeric soup again. I can’t say I won’t go back ever again but it won’t be for awhile. I’ll just settle back into my routine of going to Ha VL on Sunday’s…

Christina and William Vuoung have come back from semi-retirement to open the Rose VL Deli at Southeast Powell and 65th Street. Their soups were stellar at the original Ha &VL on 82nd Street. While the two different soups a day at the old place remain good, the children who have taken over the operation aren’t nearly as friendly or enthusiastic. It was the personalities of Christina and William that made Ha &VL so special. While the 82nd Street shop specialized in breakfast soups, the Rose VL doesn’t open until 4 p.m., making the same soups dinner soups. The Mi Quang, served on Sunday’s at the old place is now a Saturday soup at the Rose VL. Flavorful broth, turmeric noodles, pork, beef and shrimp, it’s better than phở and even my second-favorite Vietnamese soup, Bun Bo Hue. It’s great seeing Christina and William back at work, producing the best soups in Portland.

We left immediately because they only serve a soup of the day(there are other options but had our hearts on soups not deli sandwiches). We read a great review from a Portland magazine that comes out every 30 days… They loved this place but FAILED to explain it’s not a soup place as was written. Maybe it’s good but check out what they’re making that day before you get your heart into it. Call; we couldn’t find an online menu.

Today’s Menu: Shrimp Cake Noodle Beef Phở(supposed to be Fish Cake Noodle for Mondays but they didn’t have it today) Their noodles are slightly more pricey than other phở restaurants but it’s quality you can taste. The difference is all in the soup. Most places that offer phở usually have them in a bowl of murky brown colored soup and who knows what went in there to cook that soup. whereas the noodle soup base here at Rose VL is always clear. It is tasty but you can tell it doesn’t have MSG in it. I would never drink the soup from other places but only here at Rose VL(& their sister joint Ha VL) Now onto each individual noodle soup. The shrimp cake noodle soup in my opinion was the better of the two. It has what I believe to be house made shrimp cake, slices of pork and beef. The soup was delicious and the tomatoes complimented it very well. It was a great bowl of noodle soup on a cold day!(It would be good even on a hot day) The beef phở was also good but I wasn’t the one who ordered it, so I only took a few bites. I would say it’s more like your standard beef phở but better quality because of the soup I was talking about earlier. Definitely my favorite place for Vietnamese noodle soup in The West Coast besides Turtle Tower in San Francisco.

Incredible chicken curry soup. Fresh, aromatic, rich and delicious. Basically many of the same soups Ha VL makes and a few new ones, on mostly different days. Excited to be able to get my favorite soups for dinner! They also have a rice special every night, tonight was a curry rice dish. Will have to try that soon. And of course they have banh mi, smoothies, bubble, tea, coffee etc. All this and even closer to my place than Ha VL!

I’ve been wanting to try the famed HAVL soups for a year but could never get to the restaurant by 3 pm when they close due to work on weekdays and not feeling in the mood for soup noodles early on weekends. Rose VL solves that problem! Opened by the same family to serve their amazing soups for dinner and I love the concept of them only serving 2 types of soups a day. If you want a specific soup, you have to go on that day to order it with a total of 12 different types of noodle soups! I ordered the spicy beef broth my first time and the broth was so wonderfully balanced. Can’t wait to go back and try more of their soups!

I’ve been to Rose VL two times so far and am in love. They serve two specific soups each day of the week, one special rotating dish, and a selection of banh mi sandwiches and beverages including bubble tea and Vietnamese coffee. Also, the owners are always there, and are so so lovely. The first time I went, on a Saturday, my dining partner and I shared the Chicken Curry Soup, and the daily special, a fragrant and flavorful Beef Stew. The second time, on a Wednesday, we shared the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup and the Chicken and Bamboo Shoot Soup. I’ve also tried the«strong» iced coffee with condensed milk and the taro bubble tea. The Chicken Curry Soup was delicious. The broth was a flavorful yellow curry with coconut milk, and aside from their classic rice vermicelli noodles were large, perfectly cooked pieces of bone-in chicken, carrot, and potatoes. The Beef Stew was served with either noodles or baguette, and we opted for the baguette, which is the same style of baguette used for Banh Mi — thin, crusty exterior, with a very soft white interior. The stew similarly had large pieces of carrot, and potatoes, as well as large tender pieces of beef. The broth was delicious, and definitely had some ginger and lemongrass, as well as some other fragrant herbs such as thai basil, and probably some star anise, cloves or cinnamon. The Spicy Beef Noodle Soup included slices of cooked beef, pork, and ham, in a slightly spicy beef broth. For some reason I was expecting a broth more reminiscent of the Taiwanese style beef noodle soup but this was much lighter. Still very delicious but different from what I expected. My dining partner loved this soup, but I preferred the other option that day — The Chicken and Bamboo Shoot Soup was SO good. It was a really light but flavorful broth — there is just that perfect richness and flavor that comes from a simple light broth that has been lovingly tended to for hours upon hours. This is that broth. Again, there were pieces of tender bone-in chicken, along with some chicken breast, as well as the vermicelli noodles, all topped with sliced bamboo shoots, cilantro, and crispy fried shallots. The food here is delicious. It is so reasonably priced. The service is wonderful. What else do you need? Nothing.(Actually, maybe booze, but I’m happy anyway).

Hearty, simple, authentic Vietnamese noodle soups. This place simmers broths that go beyond your average phở. With a rotating menu of daily specials, each day is bound to provide a refreshing adventure for your taste buds. The place is dainty and newly furnished, and the«celestial Saigon coffee» is bitter, robust, and indulgent. I went on a Monday, so I had the shrimp cake noodle soup. This was a bright orange broth with Vietnamese luncheon meat, rice noodles, shrimp cakes, and tomatoes bobbing inside. The flavors leaned more toward the savory, seafood side versus spiciness. It was also a comfortable portion, sprinkled with beansprouts and a wedge of lime in true Vietnamese fashion. This is a delicious place for Vietnamese food that hails from all over the country. Come for dindin!

Christina, William & family never fail to impress us with their various Vietnamese soups and incredible hospitality! Now, having a location close to home make it hard not to eat there every night. If you haven’t met them & tried their incredibly flavorful foods, today is the day!

the prayers of many Portlanders have been answered. Ha Vl has opened up for dinner! Well, only at a different location and with a different name. The food is still the same and delicious. All the same soups, banh mis and shakes have been transported here, for dinner.

Excellent customer service, greeted and seated right away. Beverages came out as we ordered them. I had the chicken phở, the broth was savory and tasty yet it did not have the fattening feel the other phở broths have. The people running the place are very nice. I would come back here again.

Life is good when your absolute favorite breakfast noodle soup shop opens a new branch for dinner. Christine and William are putting the same loving care into their soups in the evening. Many of the old favorites from Ha and VL are there, but she has also produced some new variations. I had the Bamboo Shoot and Chicken Noodle Soup and it was the same great standard in presenting a clean, rich signature broth. New on the menu is a Fish Noodle Soup and a Sunday VL Special Noodle Soup that I will have to try, The new space isn’t any larger than Ha and VL, so I am hoping it doesn’t get too popular, but it is hard to imagine that not happening, given the quality of the soup and the glowing reputation of this family’s cooking. I find it pretty amazing in clueless, pathetic way that some folks give this great establishment one star«because they only have a couple of soups». It shows a general ignorance of what makes Rose VL and HaVL so appealing and unique every day. Do your friggin’ homework. It’s not another of the umpteen dozens of generic phở joints in Portland.

It’s one thing when you’re hungry, and no matter what you eat, it tastes good. It’s another thing if you’re not hungry, but the food tastes just as amazing! I ordered the chicken noodle soup along with the curry with bread. It’s a brilliant small menu that satisfies any craving from rice, to soup, to a simple sandwich. The way their menu is set up, on a white board shows they’re not forced into cooking what’s on their menu but rather what they have available fresh daily, and their menu reflects what is fresh. Very friendly staff, all family of the owner so it can’t get any more than a mom and pop shop right here! Service is fast too! I’d travel to come here to eat.

From the brilliant talent behind HAVL comes a little supper place that’s just perfect for satisfying your mid-week soup cravings. The night we came(Thursday) they had a chicken Curry with either rice or noodles and a peppery pork soup, both $ 9.50. Both were fantastic, full bright flavor, just simply loaded with fresh ingredients; absolutely well worth the money. The food came out fast, hot, and made with ingredients chosen from this morning’s market according to what looked good and fresh to the owner, who chatted us up a bit after we got our food. She reassured us that she was going to be making fun, delicious and inventive dishes that would be different from Ha VL but would soon have the same great reputation for being absolutely scrumptious. I’m already looking forward to Sunday — Vietnamese Tumeric noodles and dry Pnompenh noodle soup. My only difficulty will be deciding which one to try… I’ll probably end up doing what I did tonight, and happily get them both! They will only be open 4pm to 9pm every day but Tuesday, so come early(and come often) ;)
