Rough Cut Barber Shop

I would almost give this place a four star, but I don’t live in PDX so I can’t really give a complete assessment. One barber out of the several that they have. The guy gave me a good price, and despite the fact that he was obviously a skilled barber, I felt that we was not giving me his full attention. On the other hand, It has been a month since the haircut and I am liking it more now than I did then, says something. OK, I’ll give it a four. Check it out.

I really like the haircuts here, and they do solid beard work too. I can only do so much with my beard at home, one a month its nice to have a barber round and style it again.
However, going near closing time is a bad idea. I went at 6pm (they close at seven) and was told they only had time for one more, then pointed at the lady waiting. No big deal, I’ll come by tomorrow. So I had a beer instead and later walked by — locked up tight at 6:15pm.
I’ll still come in cause you guys do a fantastic job, but lying to a customer about your working hours is really uncool. Hope your staff member and her «friend» posing as the last customer had a good time yesterday in the sun though.

One of the worst haircuts I’ve ever gotten! Unfriendly staff, I walked in and the two employees working looked pissed they had to end their chit chat to help me. Neither even said hello, I was greeted with «I’m not coming near you until the smell of whatever you just smoked passes» because she saw me puffing on a vape outside. I should’ve known by the empty seats and the «barbers» several attempts to tell me they’re usually «sooooo busy» that this place was a dump! I currently have 3 different fades on my head, 2 on one side and a 3^rd on the other. But hey, at least she held it together on one side of my head which in sure is a step in the right direction! Too top it all off after a night of drinking his depression away the owner enjoys insulting dissatisfied customers via hissy fit. If you’re not grown enough to take negative feedback take your garbage shop of Unilocal!Listen up folks if you want a good haircut, you gotta cross the river.

I suppose I could go to any number of other barbers in the downtown area, but why would I when Rough Cuts is reasonably priced, efficient, and delivers consistently great hair cuts? Chad is great, and so is Veronica, and I’m sure the others are just as talented. If you want a clean, vintage-​looking cut for a good price, these are the guys to go to.

Had a cut from Nicole today, and she did a fantastic job. She is very professional and can handle thick unpredictable hair. Honesty one of the best cuts I’ve had in awhile. This shop is great, they have good attention to detail and the prices are half of what most shops charge! They have earned two new loyal customers.

Awesome barbershop. Great cut, these guys know what they’re doing. I came on a Saturday morning. I got real lucky, no wait. Moment I sat down three more people came in. I’ll be coming back here for sure!

Second time in six months that I show up and they are about to close during operating hours and can’t give me a cut. Their haircuts are great.

Go here to get your haircut. This is a great retro barber shop! Located on 21^st and inexpensive. For over 15 years, I used to get my haircut every two weeks when I lived in NYC. I have a discriminating taste when it comes to who’s chopping locks. After having my hair butchered twice at Bishop’s (I asked for it I guess, I had just moved here)…I finally found Rough Cut. I’ve been going to Chad for my haircut almost 3 years now. He is absolutely my personal favorite barber there. From my experience Rough Cut gives the best proper haircut in Portland for the money. Even if Chad’s not there — Veronica, Mary Lee, or Marco will do the same.

My boyfriend went in an just got a haircut from Marco, he was a magician. He was absolutely amazing. We walked in a little skeptical and he blew our mind. He is going to for sure recommend him to all his friends. I wish I had more money to tip him! Thank you Marco!

Do yourself a favor, see the pros at Rough Cuts. Consistent and friendly service. My man Chad is by far the best barber I have ever trusted to cut my hair. He pays attention to all the details while remaining efficient and sociable. Note that my hair is by no means an easy «trim some hear or a quick buzz», but requires the skills of a trained and licensed barber.
When he is not available, I have nothing but confidence in the haircut provided by the rest of the staff. They overshadow any other «barber shops» around.
Atmosphere inside the shop is old school and clean. Plus, folks have been getting getting there haircut in this same spot for 90 years (not the same people I would imagine). Avoid all the gimmicks of the other chain shops and enjoy the genuine product at Rough Cuts.
You can get a hair cut anywhere, the chains, other barber shops. But to get a great haircut, go to Rough Cuts. You’ll regret going anywhere else after (trust me, I know from experience).

3 ½ years later and Mary Lee is still the best in town! True barber shop feel with great service and no BS.

It was alright, nothing crazy good. Not that friendly but ya know, not mean either. I’d maybe go back, we’ll see.

I’ve been going here for a few years, and they do a great job. I have no complaints. They’re awesome.

Old School Barber shop or New school Salon — the battle between traditional/​puritanical vs metro-​sexuality rages on.
To explain my rating of Rough cut I have to give Unilocal readers some background: I have had my hair cut at barbershops and salons in LA, San Fran, and Boston — so I have certain expectations. There they are:
1. A straight razor and foam will be used to finish up the neckline
1a. there will be that horse hair whisk to get the little hairs of my neck and face
2. The quality of the hair cut be very high for *traditional* hair cuts.
3. It will be less expensive than a salon
4. No appt needed, service is fairly speedy (walk in and be seated in ~ half an hour)
5. The barbers will NOT be hot. This is less of an expectation, than a concession.
Here’s how Rough cut stacks up
1. No foam, no whisk, no straight razor
2. Good haircut — with some direction I got exactly the cut I was looking for, and no mess-​ups with the neckline (which is often really embarrassing — you end up with a high fade because some idiot hairdresser decided you looked ‘urban’ that way)
3. not cheap; $ 17 for the cut — by way of comparison it was $ 12 in Santa Monica (LA), the 3^rd most expensive city in the US
4. Zzzz — what? it’s still not my turn? i waited over an hour before they started. And the place was not that full)
5. Yeah, no disappointment here. :-/​Too bad, because stylists at salons are often very attractive…
Will I go back? Probably — the MOST important thing is to get that good cut, and I admit the guy did a good job. *pets head*
