Amazing milk shakes. I always go with the espresso ice cream. The gf had the strawberry last time and it was nuts-balls good.

Small little ice cream shop in Portland when you dont feel like waiting in line for Salt and Straw. While the flavors arent as exciting as Salt and Straw has to offer, the ice cream here is still great. Should give the place a try if you are in the area. Also you can get Cookies Ice Cream here!

What a satisfying twist to a brutal, disappointing day. After a traumatizing trip to Sizzle Pie(see other review) and a google maps dysfunction which had catastrophic results, Ruby Jewels brought a hint of joy to a once dark and hopeless place. So blessed to have this delightful ice cream option in my life. My night was turned around by a warm welcome and limitless samples. Oh the joys of being an American citizen. This visit has taught me to hold on to the brighter things in life. Thank you Ruby Jewels. This is Regina Phalange and this is my story.

Ice cream was good, but the waffle cone was so hard that it was inedible. I was afraid that I would crack a tooth on it.

It’s a hit or miss for me. Some of the flavors are amazing while the others are lacking luster. I do like the atmosphere and design of the Hawthorne location, but I feel like in the summer they will be struggling to have enough seating. The employees are nice which is always a plus. Still deciding if I will be back.

Delicious local ice cream, friendly staff, and no annoying lines like Salt & Straw. I am being told that my review is too short to be posted to the site, so… In conclusion to my originally stated opinion about this particular ice cream establishment, I find that the ice cream treats are delectable, enjoyable, and quite satisfying. The staff is charming, handsome and amazing! I feel confident that you, too, Will arrive at similar conclusions once you taste the deliciousness that is Ruby Jewel.

The ice cream is excellent, but Ruby Jewel has decided to eliminate regular cones as an option. Customers have the choice of a cup, or a $ 1 upsell for a waffle cone. Ice cream vendors are partly in the business of selling tradition, and cones are one part of the experience that I am not willing to give up. Compounding the problem is the choice of ‘spoons’ for those that choose a cup — flat wooden paddles make for a very clumsy eating utensil. Anyone that grew up in New England will have fond memories of ‘hoodsies’, that came with similar ‘spoons’, but hoodsies did not have mix-ins that demand something more useful. My preferred Unilocal entry is one that encourages local businesses, but I’m afraid regular cones are a deal-breaker for me.

The(newest) Hawthorne location of Ruby Jewel offers up perfectly serviceable ice cream. It’s not quite as good as Salt & Straw. The ice cream at Ruby Jewel is less sweet, less chunky. It simply feels less indulgent than Salt & Straw. But the new Hawthorne location is nice, bright, and modern. In fact, it looks strangely like the Salt & Straw on Division. All of which is a good thing, because if you’re unwilling to wait in the interminable line of Instagramatic tourists and suburbanite families for your Salt & Straw fix on Division, you can still get pretty decent ice cream nearby without the obnoxius crowds.
