History

Established in 2008.

With roots in beer and good food, Saraveza opened in October 2008. Owner, Sarah Pederson, hails from Wisconsin and brings a Midwest vibe to the Portland beer scene. Head Chef, Matt Simons, creates a humble fresh menu starring the pasty with additional emphasis on pickling and canning.

Im from Minnesota and I think this place is great. Amazing non hoppy beer selection. I dont like IPA so this is ideal for me. Also the food is really really good. I love it. It has a good price for a side of smoked trout also.

Came here on my first date with my now husband. They had a Pliny tasting and that was before I knew what Pliny was. So they are super hip offering the best (and hard to get ahold of) beers! I probably wouldn’t have sought this place out but I’m glad I was introduced to it! It’s super warm and cozy and has a Wisconsin /​knick knack vibe to it and the beers are excellent and the staff is super nice! It’s a popular place for sports especially Green Bay Packers! It’s an experience every Portlander should experience. They have yummy rice crispy treats too and beer to-​go!

Love the atmosphere!
I’ve had mixed experiences here. Sometimes there’s a great selection of beer, other times… Meh.
The one thing that definitely is not awesome was the Reuben Pasty. It is super super dry. Only has corned beef, I had no sauerkraut or cheese. Sauerkraut is my favorite part and I was very sad about the lack there of. Alberta St pub had an awesome version of a Reuben spring roll (I know, not the same) that kicks this thing’s butt.
Go for the beer and atmosphere. Do not order the Reuben pasty if you actually enjoy Reuben’s. You might cry on it.

Hands down the best beer bar in Portland. Best beertenders too! Now they have a few whiskeys so you can bring your non beer drinking friends! The BLT is the bomb! I have my fix at least once a week!

Unbelievable beer store in North Portland. Even amazing for PDX standards. So many rare and hard to find bottles here, they even have some excellent East coast breweries, which is something I’ve rarely seen in PDX. I didn’t try their food, because I was so thoroughly blown away by their beer. They’ve got stuff from all over Oregon, Cali, and Washington state. I picked up their last bottle of Firestone Walker «Sucaba» barley wine, so difficult to find out east. They had a great tap list the day I visited, but I was just there to grab some bottles. I’m not from PDX so sadly I won’t get to be a regular here at Saraveza, but if I lived here I’d be spending my paycheck going through their amazing curation of quality beers. Anyone who is interested in broadening their beer horizons should check Saraveza out!!!

Cool bar but… the pasties were dry dry dry, and almost tasteless. Brought our own gravy, as they didn’t serve any. Nope. Epic fail on the pastie. Too much crust, not enough filling. Really? You expect people to eat these with ketchup? Disgusting.

The beer is just as good as always at Saraveza. The events are great. The staff is wonderful.
They have added a new chef who makes spectacular food. They now regularly offer a vegetarian or vegan soup, and it’s usually stupendous. The daily salads are often veggie friendly and great. They rotate the veggie pasty with seasonal vegetables to keep it interesting. I’m just thrilled.

i really love what this place offers. great thoughtful eats, A-​mazing selection on drinks from all over the world and a rando midwest bar theme. rare and amazing ciders, lambics and/​or any other obscure drink imaginable.
give um a chance. they’re just off the beat’n path enough to make it not obnoxiously busy all of the time but still within reach.

Pretty neat little place with an interesting line-​up of beers, but I found the food to be disappointing. The veggie pasty of the day was curry cauliflower, and it was just very small and bland, overpriced at $ 9.75. The mac and cheese was also quite bland. Definitely sad stuff by Wisconsin standards.
I did enjoy that they had local Hi-​Wheel lavender lemon fizzy wine (I know, what even is that? Well, it’s good!), which was $ 4/​12oz during happy hour. I will definitely bring my Packers-​loving friend to this place as well as to the attached speakeasy.

This place really can’t get much better. It is a hole in the wall Packer bar in Portland. They are sitting on a gold mine of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula memorabilia. This place is cooler than a lot of Wisconsin Packer bars.
Somehow they’ve snuck in hard-​to-​get beers in Wisconsin to Portland! New Glarus was offered as well as some wonderful local Oregon/​Washinton beers.
I was highly impressed by the decorations, atmosphere, crowd, beer, and ambience. This place is really amazing. The food was delicious. True, authentic pasties that taste like you’re in the UP. The biscuits and gravy was also quite good. I ordered the baked mac and cheese and it was spectacular.
We came here to watch the Packers vs. the Bears game and couldn’t have had more fun. The bar had local Wisconsin songs like, «the Bears Still suck» and everyone in the bar knew the lyrics. We had such a fun time with other Packer fans. Almost everyone in here had Wisconsin/​UP ties. Everyone was very friendly and the service was good. One of my favorite bars I’ve ever been to.

I am from Milwaukee so I had to go check out this «Wisconsin» bar.
Overall I had a blast and I really loved the home-​made brats, Chex mix, and off the hook deviled eggs.
As a Milwaukee Native I would classify this as an «up north» bar since the vibe and feel is more akin to the small town bars I have been in north of Appleton. If they had Blatz dark and $ 2 High Life on tap, I would consider it more Milwaukee style, but hey Up North Style is ok too. Three buck cork fee on our bottle of beer from the cooler was a bit steep. :)
This said, I suggest this place as perhaps the best place to see a Packers game in Portland with a whole pile of Cheese Heads from all over America’s Dairyland.

A funky, cool bar for the beer lover a little north of downtown. It’s a long shoebox space with booths and highboys scattered through. But the first thing you notice is the rows of coolers, housing bottles you can order and crack for on-​site consumption. Some of the bottle selections are damn good stuff, and there’s also a fair bit of coverage for what’s going on around the Oregon scene in general – so there are a lot of decent everyday beers alongside the fancier stuff.
Prices are good and staff is very nice, but these guys are mostly known for the cool vibe the places carries. They have slick-​looking bottle cap art under resin on most of the tabletops, and tons of cool taxidermy and signage on the walls. It feels like it could have been here for 50 years or more. They serve great deviled eggs, which are always a wise choice at midnight after an evening of beer. There’s a back room where they host special events (beer dinners and the like), and it always feels like people are having plenty of fun here. I’ll definitely be back more often when in town.
