I’m so finished with them ! I’ve spent thousands at this store the last few months as we are finishing a total house remodel. I’ve bought bedding, furniture as well as lighting. I love the looks of the products — over priced but the look I wanted.
I’ve been inside no less than 8 times measuring placing orders etc. I see the same three employees … Do any of them remember me no. Do any of them offer to help me no. Especially the young man that works the front desk. When asking some size and availability questions will any of them look anything up and offer help no. The service center through the web is much much friendlier and helpful. I’m not buying anything here it’s simply too much money to keep spending at a place where you honestly don’t even feel good when you leave.
Restoration or rejuvenation will do just fine.

Ordered a light online for Christmas. Like many people here, I got no notice when my light actually shipped and it was several weeks after the time frame that the website estimated. So my light just showed up on my doorstep after a couple of months without warning. I love the light, it’s well-​made and is just gorgeous. That said, they need to work on their customer service. Better communication would go a long way when dealing with online customers so at least we know when to expect orders to show up and check our doorsteps accordingly.

What a lovely store! As a fan of pretty things and well appointed homes, I have to give Schoolhouse Electric a high recommendation. The sales floor is absolutely gorgeous and has my aesthetic down to T. Unfortunately, I’m not made of money and they’re pretty expensive, so right now I’m hatching a plan to just squat in the showroom. If you see me sleeping on one of their (super nice) couches, say hi!
If pressed to give a comparison to national brands, I’d say that Schoolhouse Electric is a local Restoration Hardware, with a well curated selection of decorative odds-​and-​ends mixed with a smaller (but lovely) collection of furniture and then a bunch of household nuts and bolts. Not literal nuts and bolts, but lighting fixtures (thus the name), cabinet hardware and the like.
It might be a smidge out of my price range, but I really enjoyed my time browsing this store.

Two stars for the fact that I love the aesthetic of the shades we have purchased from here, however, I went in this weekend to buy the multi-​colored striped shade for our nursery and don’t believe that I’ll ever be a repeat customer again. I thought we had the fixture that would fit at home, but it was too small, so I went back into the store to buy the correct fitting fixture and the sales gal said, «Actually, none of our stuff is in stock, it is all made to order.» Perplexed, I responded, «Well, I just bought that shade here yesterday.» She quipped back, «Well most of our stuff is made to order and not available in store.» I told her that just last summer we bought one of the fixtures in store. Again, she reiterated that I lucked out and there is no stock in store. What on Earth is the purpose of the retail store then? I asked the sales gal, «So, I just go order it online?» She replies, «Yep.» No, she didn’t offer to order it for me right there. Talk about a laid back job. Didn’t even offer a solution. Their whole business model needs some serious attention. I live 4 miles away and can’t buy one of the most common and straightforward fixtures they have. This may be a good wake up call for me though — that $ 105 4 inch fixture is probably not the best investment when it can be purchased elsewhere for much less money. My advice to Schoolhouse is to spend less time on your instagram filtered catalog and address the needs of your customers — to buy products in store in the city where they are made and where we live.

I can’t say good things about Schoolhouse Electric. I ordered a lamp and was told it would take 5 days. I assumed business days. The sales associate confirmed this with a manager. I paid the $ 600 for the one lamp and had the audacity of expecting an on time arrival.
I called customer service after 10 business days (twice the allotted time) and was told to expect 4 weeks. Josh in customer service says he has no idea why I was told 5 days and that there wasn’t much he could do… that MAYBE he could come up with a 10% discount. MAYBE?!?
Is customer service dead these days? Is there no accountability. When i’m paying for your overpriced lamps in the amount of $ 600, MAYBE you should deliver on time.

Gorgeous showroom that oozes old school cool, but the positives come to a screeching halt faster than you can say «duck and cover.» Inexplicable lead times of 4 – 6 weeks (scheduling accuracy in supply chain? Meh!) on anything much more substantial than a candle and out of this world prices that would leave Apollo 13 in the dust. With these drawbacks, you’d hope for awesome customer service, but alas, it is not meant to be. The staff there are generally apathetic to your questions and lack basic knowledge about their product line. «We build to order and have a lead time of around 6 weeks,» they’ll reply to you with a somewhat bored look. I guess I’m not cool enough for these hipsters.
Come for ideas, the beautiful showroom, and some fantastic coffee next door; but head elsewhere for reasonable prices, lead times, and customer service that actually wants to help.

Ok… They totally redeemed themselves today! Christmas Eve got in my order early! Thank you!

Don’t order online unless you want no updates or tracking on items they took your money for. Doesn’t help to live in Portland to go in and ask why the items they took your money for are sitting there, but I can’t take them home «until someone calls me.» apparently it doesn’t count that the employee is standing in front of me. It has to be someone from their online department who calls me to tell me I can go in. Something is not right internally that they can provide no status on orders they took your money for.

If you’re looking for something extraordinarily unique for your home Schoolhouse Electric has just the thing. You may not be able to afford said thing in your lifetime, but it will be there, in all its glory.
Schoolhouse has more then the name suggests. While it has a good amount of ‘electrics’ it has a lot of other things too. Aside from exquisite lighting it has all other type of home goodies from furniture to soap dishes. I tend to fancy the art, but who am I kidding I love everything here. I want to knock off star for the sheer fact that it’s completely out of my price range, but I just can’t, it’s wonderful and I’m glad it’s around. I love just walking around and getting decoration ideas and inspirations. It is home to EggPress which makes beautiful card stock that can be found here as well. It’s a great place to grab a card and a cool gift for someone. They do have all kinds of knick knacks that are affordable. It’s the kind of place you could find a gift for that person on your list that «has it all».
I recommend stopping by, even if it is only to awe at everything inside.

Schoolhouse Electric is one stunning store, for sure. From the lighting fixtures, to the hard-​wood floors, to even their brick façade, it oozes cool (along with an absolutely stunning lighting display).
The prices here are quite high, though. I was hoping to pick up a few apartment fixtures, but a bit of sticker shock (along with learning that most things aren’t available to purchase in-​store, and that order fulfillment can take MONTHS) turned me away from picking anything up.
I get the impression that this place is more of a show-​room than a functional interior design store, but you definitely will get some fantastic inspiration by visiting, at the very least.

I ordered from the website. Before ordering, I did contact the store I was told that the lead time on my order was 3 – 4 weeks and it’s now been more than six. Now whenever I call, nobody answers the phone and nobody returns messages and nobody answers emails.
I have no idea what’s going on with my order and I’m starting to think that they’ve just ripped me off for more than $ 800!
I would absolutely stay far, far away from this company.

emailed customer service to find out why i hadn’t heard a peep since placing an online order over two weeks ago, and was told that there is a three– to four-​week shipping delay on all their products. yep, all. not just custom-​made ones.
i get that there may be circumstances out of their control that put them in this situation, but it’s unacceptable for them to not provide any info about the shipping delay on the product pages. it’s not until you’re checking out that they have a tiny message about it, which i missed completely.

Loved their website for years and on my visit to portland I made a special trip to their store. I love their products and was so excited to see the store in person. My friend and I even made sure to take pictures outside. Then, we were told we could only take photos if approved by the marketing team. I explained that I am a customer and came here special to see the store in person. Apparently that did not matter. Highly Disappointed in their customer experience.

Yesterday I Unilocaled lighting, Schoolhouse Electric came up. Easy to locate, great building, and a coffee shop just inside the door. Display of lighting, amazing! Why? Lighting set up in vintage rooms, with imaginary walls. Our family owns a little 1890 decommissioned Gothic Church on the Oregon Coast. The kitchen upstairs needed two very interesting fixtures that would be unique to themselves, a give off a tremendous amount of light. The church is full of antiques and vintage everything! The gentleman that helped me, truly is visionary. I explained what my restrictions in height, color, and need for two fixtures that brighten the room. He was a genius! Found the Perfect fixtures, and the Right bulbs. Yay! Thank-​you for great service! And assistance. I will shop at Schoolhouse Electric again!

I suppose this was indeed an old schoolhouse. But now it is expansive warm space on a cold frosty day to browse and shop, especially if you need lighting fixtures for your home or home accessories.
You can also have a really good cup of Ristreeto Roasters coffee and sit in a relaxing coffee shop or wander into the store and plop down, kick back, somewhere. There’s also a doorway into a room with lots of books and couch for more privacy as you enjoy coffee.
The mood is set in this old building, hardwood floors, wood ceiling beams and pillars, all throughout pleasant music, and through the window (RR tracks) an occasional train (hear the whistle blowing) goes by or you can monitor the traffic across the Fremont Bridge.
Most important you can just really feel comfortable here — chilling out, shopping or just coffee.

It’s like walking into a interior decorating Pinterest board. Everything is cute. I could spend so much money here. Just take my credit card. Take it!
You’ll find vintage reproduction light fixtures, knobs, and textiles. Great for decorating a old Portland home.
Don’t miss the coffee shop in front. It’s awesome. One of the best mochas I’ve had in Portland.

I would like to live in Schoolhouse Electric. Not at, but IN. It’s a gorgeous, industrial, building — lots of beams, brick, and wood. It smells good, not like a warehouse, but delicious candles… and wood. It’s very smartly decorated. with beautiful housewares, yummy candles, furniture… and wood.
Basically, I love this place. If I could wander around here every day for hours without the fear of the staff thinking I was a crazy person, I totally would. THAT’s how much I love it.
Bonus: Ristretto Roasters and ridiculously cute flower shoppe. That’s right, I spelled shop with an extra p and e.

Best stuff, best staff. I could spend all day here. I want to move in. If you love modern and vintage; a little schoolhouse, a little classic, a little industrial; you will love it here. Lights are just one aspect now… Their bedding and home goods are just as stylish and rad. They are SUPER nice, too!

As far as the overall experience it is 5 stars all the way. The store is a beautiful converted wearhouse. The building also contains a coffee shop and florist. The items they sell are thoughtful and beautiful. Notonly do they carry lighting but furniture, bedding and home décor. I would live here. The branding is perfect. I was smitten from my first visit. However I waited to write a review until I had actually ordered custom lighting. Which leads me to the second part of my review.
I ordered a 3 string city chandelier in store, 18 inch houndstooth b&w fabric wrapped with white headwear. They advised me it would be 2 – 3 weeks and that I would get an email when it shipped. Later I got a call to confirm the length of my fixture, 18 inches, no big deal. After 3 weeks I called in and was rather shortly advised that they were running behind and I would get an email when it shipped. I advised the gal that it was my contractors busy season and I needed to get on his calendar to install the light. She recommended I wait to book until I get the tracking info, whatever, I felt like it was bad customer service, I was the one being inconvenienced not them. So my fixture finally arrives, and I never got that shipping email I was promised. Fortunately my contractor was able to squeeze me in the following week. I just left the unopened box for him, I came home to a fixture with yellow (not white) hardwear. Granted my husband and I were going back and forth about white or yellow, but at the end I clearly said white. It was already hung, and looked good. Bottom line, whatever they say for delivery time, add 3 weeks to be safe. Seriously it sucks, but if the lighting was not so unique and beautiful I would not bother. I will use them in the future, but probably order online so nothing is lost in translation.

I’ve been salivating about this place since I first started getting their Hardware-​laden emails. The interior and exterior pictures of the old factory building in the heart of still industrial NW Portland also enhanced my desire to come visit the next time I was in Town.
That happened on a recent Sunday with my Son in tow. He’s well aware of my shopping bug, and was happy to hang out at the handsome Ristretto Roasters that shares the ground floor with the Schoolhouse Electric Show Room. Anna Mara Floral Design is also located here.
The Show Room is gorgeous and features iconic furniture, bedding, lamps, table ware, and various other household sundries. They also have a cool little board room space for community meetings and small receptions. Things here are not cheap, but they are a wonder to look at, touch, touch and feel. I wanted some of everything, as the layout and the taste that goes into this place is impressive and in sync with what I like. However, all I left with this time was a cool retro extension cord.
Schoolhouse Electric is definitely worth a look and several repeat visits. One idea would be to gather ideas in the Show Room and then spend a few hours at Ristretto Roasters and map out some serious home design ideas over individual drip coffee. In the meantime, I’m looking at their catalog right now.

This place is so incredibly cool. Trust, five minutes here and you will want to redecorate your entire house with their vintage industrial-​meets-​modern lights, furniture, and accessories. I actually came to the shop to pick up a fixture I had ordered online, but I ended up browsing around for almost an hour. It’s such a beautiful space: think high ceilings and exposed brick (it is an old factory after all). Everywhere you turn you are surrounded by vintage card catalogs, terrariums, and of course, amazing light fixtures. If you get thirsty, they share the spot with an equally cool looking coffee shop, Ristretto Roasters.
Even if you can only dream about buying most of their furniture (it’s pretty expensive), Schoolhouse Electric sells lots of cute (and more reasonably priced) home accessories like candles, note paper, tape dispensers, polka dot mugs, metal signs, shower curtains, and even mustache oil (a perfect gift for all your hipster friends). One of my favorite letterpress shops, Egg Press, is located in the building, and so Schoolhouse also sells a great selection of their greeting cards.
Finally, I should mention that the fixture I purchased from Schoolhouse is absolutely gorgeous. The quality is excellent, and I love that it was hand-​blown and made in America.
