Our non-profit volunteer organization offers tours of the section of the Portland Underground that we have been excavating and restoring for two decades. These are educational, historical tours which are the result of fifty years of authentic research; this controversial history will be explained, with physical confirmation of unusual building practices, and the sharing of oral histories from those whose families or friends were shanghaiied out of Portland.
History
Established in 1979.
Cascade Geographic Society was established in 1979 and incorporated as a non-profit in 1984. Our all-volunteer organization focuses on historical research, preservation and restoration. We are funded by memberships, profits from festivals, tours, storytelling, and educational activities for school groups. Our volunteers come from all walks of life: teachers, contractors, university students, the high-tech. industry, retired folks, etc. The common thread is the love of authentic history: not being beholden to political pressures or government funding, we are able to offer historical information that doesn’t always shed a lovely light on the past.
Meet the Manager
Michael J.
Manager
From the time I was introduced to a variety of local histories, as a child, my passion and effort has gone into exploring physical places and interviewing (formally or informally) the people who have been willing to share their knowledge; whether of the Oregon Trail, the history of the Mt. Hood area, the underground of Portland (and associated activities). I majored in history and education, and taught teachers through Portland State University for 23 years. My desire is that lesser-known histories, and the people who lived through these times, not be forgotten. Fortunately, many people share my love of educating others, and we have a dedicated group of volunteers who, in addition to working full-time paying jobs, spend many hours each week either on preservation/restoration activities, or guiding/assisting with tours and programs.
