Sometimes a man wants to be a man. In some circles, being a man includes driving a big beatup pickup truck where the mileage is measured in furloughs and has an engine so big that the merest touch of the gas pedal turns heads and sets off car alarms. You know the kind of pickup truck that shouts «work being done here! out of the way!»
Part of being a man is also filling up such a beast every hundred furloughs or so. Luckily when the self-​pump fuel law was passed in Oregon back in the 1950’s, they had the forethought to discount diesel vehicles under the assumption that most diesel vehicles were being used by commercial and farm operators.
Unfortunately, this particular Shell station doesn’t follow the laws. According to the attendant the owner doesn’t allow self pump at all. Which easily explains why diesel prices are about 40 cents a gallon more expensive here on average.
The second problem is that the gas pump wouldn’t actually fill the tank either. I’ve never had problems with it anywhere else, ever, so I can only conclude that the problem is with their equipment.
