Best theater in town. As for the pizza, change the crust and you will be golden. Too much salt. Always undercooked. Somehow undercooked while being burnt on the bottom. Potential to be good pizza.

St Johns is a great inexpensive local theater. Lots of good beers and pizza! If it’s a movie you’ve been waiting your whole life to see go to a mega theater as the sound system at St Johns is a little dated, if it’s a normal desire movie go to here!
My only complaint about this theater would be there is occasionally little audience supervision. I’ve been there during a full out brawl (albeit it was a sibling brawl) and have been there for a young lady talking on her phone for almost the whole movie before being removed.
Still worth it for the cost and good beer!

This used to be my go-​to theater. Loved this place, such a quaint little theater. They have a decent selection of movies, several show times to choose from, reasonable ticket prices, good beer selection, okay pizza, cheaper concessions than down town and yummy popcorn. However, in the last several months I have been increasingly disappointed in the customer service. I can put up with the constantly grumpy bearded dude and even the blonde guy who always seems to charge me differently every time I go but what has put me over the edge lately has been the in consistency. Sometimes we pay at the window, sometimes we are asked to pay inside. No problem. The day I went inside I was asked to go back outside to pay. Mind you, there was no line inside OR outside. I thought the guy was joking so I looked around to see if I had accidentally jumped some queue, but nope, no line. He insisted that I buy my ticket outside when he was standing within three feet of the ticket machine. Then, today I went up to buy some yummy popcorn. Just popcorn. Not trying to get in to the movie but just to buy some popcorn to go. The people inside ignored me until I knocked on the glass window. Once the gal opened it, I asked if the popcorn was ready. She said that she couldn’t sell it to me for another 15 minutes. What? So I tried to clarify, I didn’t want to get in early (again no line) I just wanted to buy a bag of popcorn. Not budging. Come back in 15 minutes when they were open. So, I go sit in the car and wait, now there is a line forming so I get in line to try again. Finally get up to the window and a guy (maybe the owner?) tells me that the computer was locked and that he was trying to unlock it. While I was offering to pay cash, he shut the window on me. I know every place can have an off day but I am increasingly disappointed in my little, local theater.

A great local theater pub. Cheap movie tickets and gocomplainod pizza! Their crust is delicious! The seats are not the most comfortable but for $ 8 a ticket who can complain.

This movie theaters sucks!!! Their food makes me want to gag myself and the service would be better if a gorilla was in charge. DONT GO.

I love this place. $ 8 tix to see first run movies we saw Spectre (James Bond) last week and Hunger Games this week. Huge screen, great surround sound, and a decent beer selection. The pizza is probably best for the earlier seatings. It didn’t look so great by 10pm on a Sunday night. We opted for popcorn instead, which was hot and fresh. I always check what’s playing here first before I check other theaters.

Two words. Downhill. I have been going to the St. John’s theater since 2009 and it has been my number one theater for many years. After tonight’s experience I don’t plan on revisiting it for a few years.
The theatre has since discontinued the reheated hot lips pizza for their own in-​house pizza. I had two types of pizza today, the pepperoni and the vegetarian. The vegetarian was very good. The pepperoni was some of the worst pepperoni pizza I’ve ever had. I did give them the feedback and their customer service was excellent in that they gave me a refund for the slice even though I had already finished it. I also have stopped ordering the popcorn. It taste like Orville RedenBocker’s popcorn was left out overnight and you were desperate enough with the hangover the next morning to try and eat it.
The biggest problem for true movie goers in my opinion is that the upstairs screen has four clear lines along the vertical axis. I’m not sure if that’s where the screen was joined together from four separate parts or not? Irregardless there’s also a small damaged part of the screen right in the center. It’s constantly visible in any scene with any type of light right on the center on the actors faces in most cases. Very distracting. I could have asked for a refund based on that alone and based in the customer service it’s something for others to consider. Additionally in the upstairs theater between the lower seating area and upper seating area there is a stylish cast iron piping acting as a railing. However if you sit in the bottom row of the upper seating area it cuts into the lower part of the movie screen if you are under 6 feet tall. Distracting… I had to move.
In sum, kudos to the customer service. Who you’ve hired should be applauded. They are probably not paid enough for their skills based on what you’ve invested in the remainder of the theatre over time (new owners?). Very poor movie experience. Please repair the upstairs screen before showing any movies. I feel you are violating a principle of the highest order.
St. John’s theater I know you are affordable compared to the Cinetopia franchise. But the reason they were able to open multiple venues is they kept the quality high. I would easily pay two dollars above the current ticket price in order to have an experience which includes a quality screen and reasonable food. I will not be returning for a couple years or until I see the reviews improve significantly regarding the above-​mentioned items. It saddens me greatly as you were once my favorite theater but again if the quality is such that even at a discounted price it ruins your moviegoing experience than why even go at all?

The tickets are really reasonable. The pizza is AWESOME! The lines for the pizza get really long during the late showtimes, but I can’t even complain because the people who work the counter are so speedy!
Each screen has its own unique character. The stadium style seating in the upper theater is my favorite. Even with a smaller screen, there’s not a bad seat in the house.
It’s a great older theater with tons of character, and well worth a trip to St. John’s if you’re not from the area.

This is a great movie theatre to go to all alone. I love this movie theatre. They serve pizza, wine and beer along with the regular yummies like candy and popcorn. The only have 2 movies at a time but you cant beat their $ 5/​$ 6 per ticket prices. The big theatre has seats with tables in the back!

First off, local and independent. Go! Food and drink options are lesser priced than downtown area options. It’s worth it to have the intimate and local feel. Downsides are few! However, tonight we saw Martian. Apparently BEFORE 8pm it’s parental discretion… We heard an infant fuss (luckily it ended there more/​less) and worried over contamination of a second grader who sounded like he has the Death Cold. Go! But after 8pm!!!

Local, cheap, beer served. Only thing that always sucks when you serve alcohol at a movie is the few loud assholes who can’t shut up bc they’re drunk. Lots of kids for early show times, but if you get lucky to not seat near loud mouth adults, this place is rad. Love the sign out front too.

I come here often as I live so close, but would recommend it nonetheless because it has a great feel. Its decent picture and sound, has two theaters one downstairs one upstairs. So they show two movies a week, not the selection you would find at a Regal Cinemas, but worth it for the charm factor. Its a little rundown, not pretending to be upscale and I kind of like that. There are also bars/​tables for the seats in the back so you have something to put your pizza on. The pizza and popcorn is good but not great, though its reasonably priced. This is one of the favorite date spots of my boyfriend and I. A fun chill place to go see a movie!

The theater is cute, the pizza is edible, and the price for beer is ok. The staff is nice, and tickets are only $ 7. However, many of the people who frequent this place are loud drunk dildos. Mad Max was damn near ruined for me by wasted jerks trying to prove they were funnier than the movie was good. They failed at this, but succeeded in pissing me off.
Please turn up the volume on the movie, and turn out the barely dimmed lights in the back of the house. Also, encourage street justice amongst your patrons.

Excellent non-​chain first-​run theater. Both ticket and concession prices are more reasonable than any of the big guys, and being able to have a beer and a slice of pizza is a great option. On the small side and a bit worn around the edges, they’re a well loved part of the local community, and I plan on going here many times in the months to come as the summer blockbuster season starts.

Best place for first run movies cheap, yummy beer and yummy pizza! You can’t go wrong!

Pretty good local theatre with a good price for first run movies. $ 7 after 6pm. The staff is pretty friendly and I really like the remodel they did to the outside of the building a while back, adding lighted signage with the showing movies. It just belongs and adds to the St. Johns feeling.
The food is average if you ask me, and great if you ask my boyfriend. He loves the veggie pizza. Sometimes it’s just a matter of what you like, and I haven’t eaten anything I’ve hated, but nothing has blown me away yet. Sometimes I feel like then popcorn has sat for just a little too long. Either a little less should be popped so no one gets cold/​stale pop corn (and fresh batches popped intermittently), or they should be willing to toss the old popcorn after a certain point. However, I’m not a popcorn machine expert, so this may be impossible. Who knows? I don’t hate them for it. I do love the hard pressed cider, though.
I was a hard core Regal movie-​goer for years. I switched my focus to locally owned businesses and don’t regret that, but I miss the actual movie ticket stubs. These are great keep sakes and I always keep my ticket stubs and not having them for the majority of the movies I see in St Johns is sort of sad.
Sometimes the sound from the smaller upstairs theatre does bleed into the downstairs theatre, it’s only sort of noticeable. Not super disruptive in my experience.
I wish I could give 3.5 stars, but alas — no dice. I’m going to keep attending for sure. They’ve been a staple in St. Johns for forever and deserve support, there are just a few little items I think that could be added to make it the best experience possible.

I have to say this isn’t my favorite theater in Portland.
I’m all for the small businesses, the St Johns neighborhood and local economy.
We saw a movie upstairs where the front row is in front of the screen. Like, if you stand up, your shadow projects onto the film. That’s kinda a bummer. We were in the upper half and off center but the stadium seating isn’t quite stadiumy enough if you have a taller person so it can be a little lean-​fest. Luckily I liked my movie mate so he didn’t mind my leaning.
It also seemed to have cropped and zoomed acoustics for your neighbors. I heard chewing from rows away and coughs, creaky chairs and people coming and going to the lobby really distract from the experience. And paper bags crinkling from popcorn. All those little sounds a bigger, roomier theater seems to muffle, the wood floors here seemed to intensify. Maybe in a comedy this wouldn’t matter but if you’re watching a drama where details matter and a line is impeded by chewing, it can be distracting. I never notice this at Living Room or Laurelhurst or Bagdad. Academy has the same issue kinda. I think carpet would dampen a lot of it.
One last gripe, the audio seemed off on the film. The sound effects were hella loud and engaging, so was the score but the dialogue seemed disproportionately quiet compared to those other two elements. We both left saying we missed at least 20% of the lines. Full disclosure tho, at home, I watch movies w close captioning. But I also see a fair amount of movies in theaters and don’t find this an issue anywhere else.
I’d go back because it shows the kind of movies I like and I appreciate what they’re doing: art deco, keeping history alive, not just blockbusters but well curated movies. I like they take cards and offer pizza. Do they serve alcohol? I can’t remember. If they do, I like that too. I just wish the actual movie watching was a bit more technically advanced.

Great little theater.
One large theater downstairs, and a tiny one upstairs, the amount of movies they show are obviously limited.
However you can pay $ 7 for a brand new movie, and get a beer and some pizza.

This is a great neighborhood location to see a movie. I believe the theater is locally owned and the prices are better than you will find at the chain theaters. Typically they play two movies (recently released). The more popular movie usually plays downstairs with the other movie playing in the upstairs theater.
Perhaps the best thing about this theater is that they serve beer and hard cider which you can take with you into the theater. Certain seats in the theater also come equipped with tables so you can split a pitcher with your friend or significant other.

If you’re in the neighborhood, it’s a great place to see first-​run movies at a better price. It’s more well-​known than it once was, so don’t expect to walk in 10 minutes before the latest Katniss movie and have a seat.
Maybe also don’t expect concessions. The pizza and such are decent when they’re there, as in physically present, but whoever handles the stocking and ordering doesn’t seem to understand how to respond to, well, people wanting to have the food they advertise.
But, hey, if you wanted a corporate experience, you’d be at Regal paying twice as much for the same ticket. As my Latin teacher used to misquote his Cajun brother, «You pays yer moneys, you makes yer choice.»
