We loved this place! The man who seated us and took our order(maybe the owner?) was so nice and engaging. We were served complimentary tea as soon as we were seated. If you stop by this place, try to guess the flavors! It’s such an interesting and delicious combo. We both had phở. The value was good for the serving size. The broth itself was… Well, there’s only one word for it. It was meaty. Definitely more meaty than the phở I’ve previously had. The overall flavors were a bit different, but not in a bad way. The serving of meat in the broth was ample. I think the only bit of feedback I would have is that the noodles were ever so slightly overdone. The service was so friendly and the food was good. We will definitely come back!

Fairly solid Phở in close-in SW. I was here by mistake — looking for the wrong Goodwill and then the wrong Sushi place. So when I saw this on the corner, and traffic prevented me from ging any further… I headed into the parking lot and went inside. They moved me from the first table to a table that was too cold. A lot of this place was cold since there are two doors swiging open with cold air at any time. I ordered the steak soup for 8.95. It was a decent amount of soup and I liked it quite a bit. If the place had more character and less cold, I would call it a 4 as the food is good and I’d love to try some more dishes next time I get lost…

The best Vietnamese restaurant in Portland. In addition to many varieties of delicious Phở, they offer fantastic lunch and dinner specials. They even have free parking. The owner is a class act and once you come here you will return again and again.

Their service has really improved. They greet you at the door, take your order quickly, and come to your table to collect the check. I have also noticed that their phở has improved too.

Phở Ga was fragrant and delicious. Hoisin tasted homemade. Ambiance was great. Will definitely come again!

Thanh Long is possibly the worst Vietnamese restaurant I’ve had the misfortune to enter. The food was inedible and expensive, making my lunch hour a colossal waste. Phở is usually a safe bet in any Pacific Coast city. The recipe is simple yet infinitely varied, requiring at minimum a rich beef broth and fresh vegetable garnishes. As the national dish of Vietnam, it evokes the savory, spicy heat of Southeast Asia in every bite. Thanh Long’s phở tasted like brown water, lacking even basic seasoning. I felt like I was sipping a sodium-free packet of Lipton’s powdered broth with a few wilted onions. The beef was fatty and cartilaginous like boiled mutton. I tried to spice it up, but within five minutes, I lost interest in the bowl. The service was weirdly tense and intrusive for an empty restaurant. I’m not sure what the owner’s deal is, but he didn’t blink when we returned full bowls. I suppose he was pleased to take in $ 40 for what tasted like $ 3.50 in ingredients.

Decent shrimp phở. Nothing special with the spices or ingredients. + the restaurant was very clean, the proprietor prompt and helpful. One of the things I would have liked to see was more varieties/flavors of the phở: meatballs, etc. it was pretty basic.

I feel that Thanh-Long deserves a solid 4. Honestly it is a staple of most fellow schoolmates that I know of. They don’t dote on you but great broth. Also recommend the taro cake, but they all look great! Definitely a repeat customer of this place. It seems like it takes a tiny bit more time than one would expect but I assume that’s because it is fresh. At least it tastes very fresh!

Been meaning to try out Phở places near the PSU campus, but had hesitated to come in here due to some mediocre ratings. Finally, a mighty phở craving directed me to this place. I came in around 3 or 4, so it wasn’t very busy. I can’t remember the name or number, but ordered the one with basically everything — beef, pork, and tripe, at the very least. Service was quick, but when I took a sip of the broth… The phở nodule in my heart shriveled a little. So bland! Phở shouldn’t be terribly salty, of course, but it should have enough flavor in proportion to the amount of water in the bowl. And I don’t think the server gave me what I ordered because there wasn’t a single piece of tripe — unless I missed some tiny pieces of nominal tripe. I added extra hoisin and chili sauce. For the price(~$ 9) I would have much preferred some good old SE82nd or Phở on Powell. Might come back later to try something else, just to see if the chef was just having an off day, forgot to sacrifice to the phở gods, or something.

Much like the front of a Cadillac, this place is classy and has two lights! I went in with my cousin and ordered the«finest dish in the house.» The chick behind the counter brings out a child size swimming pool full of soup. I changed into my undersized travel trunks and got in the same way I enter my toe-separated Seahawks socks; embarrassed and one toe at a time. The water(soup) was just like the hot young waiter, FINEINMYBOOK! Later I yelled to the waiter to, «throw me a life preserver!» Dude has the audacity to say, «hey, we don’t use no preservatives in dis soup.» Great soup!

I know i know, i need to stop with the phở. But it’s so good i can’t stop thinking about it. I keep telling myself i should try something new… but i don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon.

I enjoy the Phở and bean pies, but the service is sometimes lacking. And by that… It sort of feels like you are bothering them, by eating at their restaurant. I will still continue to eat there… And feel bad for enjoying their food and bothering them for being there!

It makes me sad that I have to write this review, but if I don’t then I would doing the people of Portland an injustice. I really wanted to like this place or at least give it three stars, but I couldn’t. I have heard so many bad things about this place, but I wanted to try it myself. I went to eat with a friend. My friend ordered tell phở and I ordered the kong pao chicken. I am Vietnamese so I do have high standards when it comes to Vietnamese food. The food that was served to my friend was not phở… It might have looked like phở, and had the phở components, but that was no bowl of phở. That bowl of phở that we both tasted was a disgrace to the Vietnamese heritage. I might sound harsh, but I can’t say it in any other words. The staff is so awesome that I feel bad for giving this place a bad review, but you can see it on the staff’s faces. They know they aren’t serving the best food. I know many people like to eat here, but when you walk in do you see any actual Vietnamese people eating in there? There’s your hint as a customer if an international food place is serving authentic food. I wish the owner would care more about what he is serving to people instead of making money. If he served good food plus the service that his staff had then I don’t see why he his restaurant wouldn’t be more popular. My apologies if this offends anyone. I just never been so turned off by a place before.

I’ll start with the positives, what earned the stars for this place. The service was friendly and quick. Was greeted with a smile and served with one too. The atmosphere is quiet, clean and relaxing also. On to the Phở. I’ve eaten numerous Phở Ga(Chicken Noodle Soup) at many different Phở stops and this might take the cake as the worse. I hate to say that kind of thing but just looking out for Unilocalkind. The broth was for sure from a standard chicken stock box, that’s what makes it so incredibly oily and lack luster. The broth is the blood and soul of Phở and this was soulless. The noodles… the noodles are what caused me to get my meal to go and throw it away outside, harsh but the truth. There was an incredibly off putting flavor of spices that some how bonded itself to the noodle making it inedible in my books. The ice coffee, good! Consumed one positive substance. If you want something quick, sure come here but if you’re looking for quality Phở this isn’t the place for you… and certainly not me.

Oh, I love their phở… I’ve been addicted to phở for a while now, I think it’s because of the rain and the cold weather. I’ve had Thanh-Long’s phở twice and I will continue coming back for their phở! What I love most about their phở is the broth, it’s not greasy and I love how black peppery it tastes. I can finish the small phở easily — noodle and broth, that’s how good it is! I also like that they provide red pepper chili sauce along with the basic sriracha sauce, it kicks the spicy level up a notch. I’ve also tried a seafood dish(forgot the name of it) once and it was also great. Oh, and the mooncakes! I’ve tried the red bean, mung bean and taro mooncakes, they are delicious! I recommend you to try one after your meal, you won’t regret it! I will certainly come back next time when I’m around the PSU campus.

I recently moved from a heavily Vietnamese neighborhood in Chicago. I’ve reviewed plenty of places that specialize in Phở(see«Favorite Little Saigon Asian Cuisine» list) and Thanh-Long stacks up reasonably well against them. I’ll divide this review into pros and cons. PROS: +Choice of large or small Phở. One of my most common complaints is that bowls of Phở are so large that a single person can’t eat them. If you are by yourself for lunch, definitely get a small bowl. +Great choices of soup beyond Phở. I recommend the lemongrass soup with chicken or tofu. +Let’s be honest, where else are you going to go for Phở near PSU campus? This is hands down the best option in the area. +Fast, friendly service. CONS: –Broth makes or breaks Phở. I find this broth to be mediocre. –Not a lot of embellishments. Sriracha, Hoisin, crazy hot red peppers, and that’s it. I like sweet pepper sauce in my Phở and am used to 5 – 6 condiment choices to «customize» my bowl. Overall, I believe the pros outweigh the cons, and I will likely be back. Between convenience and service and lack of better options, I maintain that this is the place for Vietnamese soup near PSU.
