The Barn

Fabulous produce selection and prices. The new manager is WONDERFUL, the other employees, meh… That is for cashiers. Most are young, talk only to each other, act like they are being inconvenienced to serve! The workers who get stuff from the back and bring to the car are always courteous and friendly enough. If they offload the childish cashiers this would be a five star experience. No, not five because I have heard two of the older women refer to the guys who haul stuff as «boys». They Are grown men, some even middle aged, not good.

Very down-​home atmosphere. Large section of seasonal produce. Very nice cashier. Some of the corn and apples were bottom of the barrel… Thus the 4 stars. But this be a place that we come back to!

I love the barn! They usually offer fresh local produce. I especially love that they offer whatever fruits that are in season. I went this past weekend and there were over 10 (maybe even 15!) varieties of apples. Some varieties I hadn’t even heard of – no kidding, I had to google over half of the names to read about them. American varieties, European varieties, and more! Hybrids, non-​hybrids. My eyes were going crosseyed. They also had about 6 or so different varieties of locally grown pears. It’s awesome.
Aside from fruit, they have a large array of veggies and even garden plants. Walla walla onions still on the stalk. Along the far right wall, there is a display of local honey and locally jarred preserved fruit. It’s like a farmers market that is opened every day. I recommend going earlier in the day. I notice the produce is wilted and sad at the end of the day. Prices are fair.

Love, love this place. Been shopping there for years. The produce is fresh, mostly locally grown (all local produce is marked as such), very reasonably priced, and very good quality. Great place to stock up on onions, potatoes, squash and pumpkins in the fall and their corn is always wonderfully fresh. Well worth the drive for me, especially in June for berries. Usually crowded on Saturday so try to shop mid-​week, if possible.

I’ve been going to this place about once a week all summer. They have a great selection of local produce, some grown on their farm on Sauvies Island. Most every thing is super fresh and better quality then anything found in a store. Kind of like being able to go to a farmers market that is open every day but Sunday. Most everything is less expensive then either a store or a farmers market.
There are two drawbacks. First, they don’t do organic. Or if they do it’s not marked or advertised as such. Second, the customer service is not the greatest. Most of the cashiers are pretty fast but in general seem kind of mad that they are working there. But maybe I would be too if this posted sign is an indication of what they have to deal with.

We’ve now been to The Barn about 4 – 5 times, and it’s a great place it you are into canning or pickling. Great selection of veggies, huge bags of cukes for pickling, and really nice people who are more than willing to help when you have a million questions about pickling or canning.
They are only open from June 1^st until Thanksgiving (and closed on Sundays), so keep that in mind if you are planning a trip there.

This is a good place for some produce, okay for some things and not so great for others. Their apples are always good but still you have to be careful of other stuff. I’ve gotten not so great corn, although it’s usually good. You need to peal back the leaves and check both the kernel and size of the ear. I’ll never buy watermelon there again. Twice I bought watermelon in two separate years and both times they were old and terrible. A waste. I love to buy squash there though.

Thanks be to RW and Jeannie for recommending Barn. There is a striking variety of very fresh produce, mostly priced well below what you’d expect. I walked out today with 7 – 10 days of produce for less than a night’s dinner costs at Zupan’s. Their strong points were: there’s a ton of corn; there are many varieties of onions, beets, radishes, potatoes, and apples; they have local tomatoes by the box; they have these tiny locally grown plums and apricots which I’ve never seen anywhere else. They are among the cutest fruit I’ve ever seen.
And the cashiers are freakily fast on the registers — they’re not asking «what kind of radish is this?», they know what everything is and how much it costs.
Of course, it is quite a schlep getting there, and although I enjoyed taking the scenic route on Marine Dr., there were 3 times on the drive where oncoming traffic veered into my lane, perilously close (maybe they were distracted by the beautiful scenery?), so beware!
If I have another free Saturday, or day off during the week, I’ll be schlepping back for more produce. Note that it is really just a produce market, so you’ll need to find other weekly staples elsewhere.

This place is a hidden gem. Farm fresh produce at unbeatable prices. GREAT quality of goods and quite a variety as well.
TIPS:
–Plan ahead, they are closed Sundays
–Bring your own bags (reduce plastic & much easier to cart away your goodies)
–They do sell some flowers & vegetable plants in an attached greenhouse area
–There are reduced price vegetables/​fruits; so if you are hankering for some banana bread & need those older bananas– there you go!
–Great for people that do canning, in season items are in a special corner ready to grab

It’s a blessing to have easy access to The Barn. If you want fresh, locally grown, and cheap produce, this place is it. It has seasonal fruits and veggies. I don’t know how they do it, but the prices here hard to beat as compared to local groceries and even farmer markets. In the summer, the green beans look and feel as if they just got plucked from the vines. In the fall, you get a 2 foot stalk of brussel sprouts for $ 2. They also sell flowers for planting as well.
I really love this place. It’s a gem. What’s better than buying local and cheap produce. They are open from May till November, Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Fresh. Seasonal. Mostly Local. Reasonable prices. The selection of fresh fruit right now is great. Almost always full of customers, the parking lot is small-​ish so if you plan to come on a Saturday, bring your patience along with your reusable bags. Open from June-​November. A spot I always hit when it comes time to can my annual batch of salsa. Don’t find all the ingredients for my recipe here but when I can get huge, fresh local Romas for $ 1.29/lb — it is worth the trip. They even carry some canning supplies and take credit/​debit cards with minimum $ 5 purchase.

Really impressive!
Our first time, we picked up Kohlrabis with greens, Giant Dinosaur Kale, Walla Wallas with the stalks still attached, berries, cabbage, and some other veggie stuff for $ 12! At least two bunches of all the veggies, and SUPER fresh and delicious.
We were piled with Kale Chips, Kohlrabi chips, Kohlrabi GREENS chips, Walla Walla onion stalks cooked on the grill (Onions, too!) and the berries and such barely even made it home!
We’re bringing people with us now, and having a blast when we go!

I am lucky to live near this place. A lot of the veggies come from their own farm and most of the other produce is local. A lot of the fruit and veggies is not organic. They are only open from June to Thanksgiving Day and always closed on Sunday.
Important: Sugar pumpkins only 19cents/​lb and are the best for making pies, cookies, gelato, etc. I buy a bunch, roast them and freeze them. Yum!

So what do you do when you work or live near Airport Way and don’t want to walk/​bike/​drive/​TriMet to a farmer’s market in a different area of town?
Head to the Barn!
A decent selection of mostly local fruits, veggies, & honey, and it’s family owned! It’s all seasonal so it’s ~½ empty when they first open in June, but as the months roll on it fills pretty will with the basic staples you’ll need for an average meal. Most of the prices are decent, some are slightly more expensive than similar local produce @other markets, but there’re always at least a few items on sale at a major discount (e.g. cauliflower 2/​$ 1).
A nice place to walk to during your lunch hour on a summer day to grab an apple, plum, peach, etc for lunch :)
Definitely worth checking out if you’re nearby.

Rustic, family owned farm between Airport way and Marine drive on 148Th. They grow the majority of their produce, and all of it is absolutely fresh. You can buy many items such as peaches, tomatoes, pears, and apples by the box. They also have corn straight from the field for 4/​$ 1, lovely heads of cauliflower for .99 a head, and later in the fall stalks of Brussels sprouts for the same price. They have a huge selection of winter squash and pumpkins. I always buy the sugar pie pumpkins for Thanksgiving baking. You will see many Russian immigrants with heads of cabbage the size of Monster truck tires in their carts. This is a great place to go for fresh produce at reasonable prices!
