History

Established in 2015.

Formerly the Point of Sail Gift Shop located next door to the Island Café, bought by the creator of the Portland «Happy Hour Guidebook» and re-​branded as The Happy Mermaid. As an official dining-​and-​drinking-​out professional, this beautiful harbor area is owner Cindy Anderson’s favorite in all of Portland, so when this adorable floating home was up for sale, she jumped right on board!

As a graphic designer and artist, she brings an eye for color and beauty to this Hayden Island treasure trove. It’s a cute boutique – good for gifts and nautical décor. Friendly staff. It’s small and can get crowded with folks awaiting their table at Island Café, which is next door.
I especially like the garden flags – colorful, artful selection. worth the stop.

If I could I would live in this shop, and if I can’t live there then I want to wrap everything up and take it home with me. I was thrilled with the selection, so many lovely items to take home or to give as gifts and the prices are super! I didn’t have much time to browse because I was meeting friends for lunch at the Island Café (they had an hour wait so we went elsewhere) but I still managed to take a wall hanging home with me four days ago and have been asked a dozen times where it’s from.
You can tell before stepping over the threshold that each item was chosen for it’s «Happy» vibe.
The location might be a bit tricky to find but it is definitely worth the effort!

Made it to this wonderful little store for opening day last weekend. It is filled with treasures — a one stop shop where you can buy the perfect treat for yourself like clothing or jewelry, gifts for friends & family (cards, soaps, and coming soon WINE!), party & picnic supplies (wine & beer carriers, glass & plastic-​ware, cute napkins, etc.), decorative items like wall art, and much more. Cindy has an eye for finding unique items that will make you HAPPY to give and receive.

Absolutely a destination shop worth discovering. This little store is packed with treasures. Totally worth the short 5 minute detour off the Interstate 5 (and that includes easy parking). I might even boldly say that The Happy Mermaid will become one of your go-​to shops for finding that something special for yourself, family or friends.
There are pieces of art, a few racks of clothing, as well as affordable, unique gifts or that something special for your home or boat. She’s done her homework and has found items at price ranges which allow you to shop guilt free or indulge in a one of a kind item (totally worth the price).
My first trip there I shopped for me! I found two statement pieces of jewelry, a pair of earrings, plus 2 headbands. I wore one of the necklaces today and received a compliment with the question: «where did you find that?». I already know I’ll go back sooner then later.
The owner/​buyer Cindy Anderson has earned all 5 of her stars. She may be new to retail, but she has an eye for what people will be thrilled with discovering at her Happy Mermaid shop.
