Portland Montessori Collaborative is a Montessori pre-​school in Portland, Oregon offering full and part day care for infants through Kindergarten. We are a year round school offering four and five day schedules for full and part day care.

We boast wholesome meals cooked on site, trained and experienced staff, and a commitment to environmental sustainability, and outdoor curriculum.

History

Established in 2012.

Hilary Smith and Mercedes Castle bring a combined eighteen years of experience working with infants through preschool to our collaborative effort. After successfully founding several Certified Family Child Care homes offering Montessori programs, Hilary and Mercedes seized an opportunity to merge their programs into a beautiful Certified Center in order to expand their offerings. Now serving eighty children and their families, Portland Montessori Collaborative is a leader in Montessori education in Portland.

Business Owner

Hilary is the Administrative Director of The Portland Montessori Collaborative. Hilary holds AMI Montessori Teaching Credential at the Primary (3 – 6) and Assistant to Infancy (birth — 3) levels as well as a M.Ed. Hilary received a Certificate of Advanced Studies from Loyola College as well. Hilary is active in the Oregon Montessori community, and is the 2013⁄14 Oregon Montessori Association Board President. Hilary is working towards completing a post graduate Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education. Hilary has taught for over nine years both in private and public sectors of the Montessori community in Oregon and New Zealand. After working for several years at the Native Montessori School, Hilary opened Cedar Montessori School in the fall of 2006. When she is not busy in the office or the classroom Hilary enjoys spending time with her husband Aaron and her two sons, and walking her two crazy Jack Russel Terriers, Peanut and Pickle.

If you haven’t considered a Montessori education for your child, you should look into it as soon as possible and send your child here! The toddler community is warm, friendly, and filled with smiling children. The primary community is vibrant and involved, with generous opportunities for your child to learn and develop into their own amazing little person. Their commitment to being a green daycare and to providing healthy food for the children is only further proof of why your child should attend PDXMC. No daycare will ever be perfect, but PDXMC is simply great.

I have 2 kids — 6 and 3. My oldest did not attend a Montessori and my youngest is currently attending PDX MC. Having experienced different care situations (small daycares, corporate daycares, nannies), I much prefer the montessori experience at PDX MC. I always knew that my child was well cared for, and loved. She started in the classroom when she was 2 and quickly developed a level of independence, self sufficiency and focus that was amazing for someone so young. I credit PDX MC for that. She is always happy to go to school. This school allows her pesonality to shine and she has really thrived under the love and care of the teachers and staff. I never had any doubts sending her to school, unlike the other situations I had with my older child where I had to literally peel him off of me every morning when I was dropping him off while also seeing the chaos in the classroom. I always love dropping my youngest off at PDX MC because the classroom is always so peaceful and kids are focused on their «work». I know that PDX MC works hard at maintaining that optimum environment for the kids. I appreciate that PDX MC does this, to limit the disruption around the childrens’ learning.
The teachers and administrators always have the time to discuss our child and her development and to work with us to ensure we have consistency between school and home. I’ve recommended this school to other parents who have enrolled their kids and are extremely happy.
I also appreciate the community building and parent night activities. As a result, my daughter has developed close frienships with the other kids and the whole family feels like we’re part of a bigger community. It’s really nice to be a part of this.
On a sidenote — the kids here have better meals than any school I have ever been to (and even better than the meals I have). Everything is organic, nutritious and home made and they accomodate all dietary restrictions.

When we relocated to portland from California in August 2011, we were anxious and nervous to look for a preschool for our daughter. After visiting 6 different places, PDX Montessori Collaborative was by FAR the most welcoming and gracious place. The staff and faculty are all about the children and our daughter has thrived ever since. It was important that our daughter be in a diverse and multicultural community. She has grown, is curious, generous, and incredibly independent. We were sad when we had to day good bye last month as we loved back to CA. Now, as we are looking for a new place, we are all missing the warm smiles, friendly classrooms, and the great community we built here. Stellar leadership and amazing staff overall!!!

My children (2.5 & 6) have attended this nurturing, loving school since it opened and we have always been pleased with it. Staff turnover is unbelievably rare and each individual staff member is a wonderful addition to the lives my children. I am so thankful to have found this amazing school and have recommended it to many friends.
