This is the 2^nd night in a row i have tried to make it to this store. I arrived tonight at 7 on the nose and everyone was already gone with the store locked up. I would not have rushed here had i known they dont even stay open til 7. I called beforehand to let them know i was coming and the woman at the call center didnt care and didnt even let me know that i wasnt talking to the store. Im sure U-​Haul doesnt care that i was going to buy enough boxes to pack and move my whole house, but you as the consumer might think twice before coming to this location.

Before we go any further, let’s deal with the elephant in the room: it will not cost you $ 19.95 to rent anything from U-​Haul. Ever. I rented a 12′ truck for 3 hours and drove it a little over twenty miles. I’ve been charged over $ 80 for that at the time of writing. I’m not terribly surprised by the amount, but since the invoice I was promised would be in my inbox this morning never materialized, I have to assume that the myriad additional fees U-​Haul had already added to my $ 19.95 have since been further padded by charges for things like wear and tear on the door I opened to enter the store or a fee for the carbon dioxide I exhaled while in their truck, thereby undermining their commitment to the environment.
Anyway…
The process for renting the truck online was easy enough, and I was only at the location for about five minutes before I was on my way, so I will give credit for speed and efficiency, but — and it’s a but Sir Mix-​A-​Lot would appreciate — I had never driven a truck of any kind before yesterday. Dude takes my deposit and just hands me the keys to a vehicle that handles likes a pile of bricks on a skateboard, just lets me loose onto Powell on a Saturday night.
Also, the front right blinker didn’t work. The other stuff I can take with a pinch of salt, but it’s not cool to rent somebody a vehicle that could get them pulled over or cause an accident. If the person who pronounces the vehicles at this location roadworthy can miss a basic pre-​trip check like that, what else could they miss? It’s a point I’d consider before handing over your money.
I didn’t kill anybody or get pulled over, and the move I used the truck for was successful, but I wasn’t given any direction for returning the thing, either, and arrived at the location after hours to find it deserted and in darkness. The entrance was blocked with other rentals, so I drove in via the exit, parked the truck in a spot that didn’t look too random, and — after a couple of minutes — found the key drop and headed back to the familiarity of my Accord, in which I at least know where to find the switch for the hazards.

I cant blame them for the outrageous $ 0.99/mi charges as I agreed to them beforehand, but they outright scammed me for a $ 30 service fee to refuel the vehicle. I put plenty of gas in the car less than 1 mile from the return center and triple checked the fuel levels to ensure it was well above the mark it should have been. When I called back to tell them there was a mistake, he told me i was wrong. Seriously? Thankfully I used my Amex. I will be refuting this charge with them promptly. Steer clear of this place — there are plenty of nicer Uhaul rentals in Portland. The one on Sandy is much better!

First off, I have used UHaul for all of my rental truck needs when I have moved my house. I trusted them and talked my partner into using this location and this company for our most recent moving needs as we needed to move some belongings down to a friend who lives on the Central Coast.
When we picked up the truck, the tank was on fumes. So, we had to add extra time before we could get our things out of storage and actually moving them as well as driving to the closest gas station (in the opposite direction of our storage unit) just to be able to use the truck!
We also inquired about any discounts AAA and were informed that these discounts were ‘at the manager’s discretion.’ Rather an odd way of putting it, ‘at the manager’s discretion,’ meaning if he did not feel like giving it, even if it were applicable, he didn’t have to apply it.
Then, we were told that if we left the tank at the ¼ mark, we’d get a refund of $ 50.
Ok, all well and good. After driving additional mileage to the gas station, spending time filling the tank, and then proceeding to our storage unit, and puzzling over ‘the manager’s discretion,’ things were looking up. We got everything loaded, moved and returned the truck with the gas guage sitting at the ¼ mark in the alloted time, but after closing hours. But, we’d asked about dropping the truck off after hours and were told that this was acceptable.
The next day, we are told that we would not be getting a discount for AAA and that we were short by one gallon for the fuel refund. One lousy gallon! I could have understood this if the gas guage was below the ¼ mark, but not over one lousy gallon! The needle marked ¼ tank!
Needless to say, we will not be using this location again and will not be using UHaul again, either. If I could have given no stars to this rating, I would have.

Great service. The employees were courteous and helpful.
Why two stars? False advertising. Let’s just say that a $ 19.95 4-​hour cargo van rental somehow cost me $ 90. Here’s the breakdown: $ 20 rental fee; $ 10 rental tax; $ 1 processing fee; $ 0.59 per mile; plus filling the tank upon return ($ 20). I’ll have to admit, I’m a little dismayed that I had to empty my wallet to move a twin box spring, mattress, and frame from Forest Grove to Portland (totaling 2 hours and 70 miles).
Misleading customers does not create return customers. I will likely use another moving service in the future. Note of advice: do your research prior to choosing U-​Haul.

Most of the guys here are great! I’ve rented several times from this location, and have never had a problem.

Very friendly employee who helped me carry pads to my car. One star off because they didn’t have enough furniture pads in stock.

We’ve used this location twice, and they have been pretty good. The parking situation when you drop off the truck is kind of strange: out on the street somewhere wherever you can find. Not much they can do about that, I suppose. We had no problems with the people or the truck either time, which is more than I can say for some other locations… I will likely use this place again if I need a truck.

Absolutely great service here. They got us in quickly, installed the hitch quicker than I thought and charged us a very fair price with no BS. They were helpful and knowledgeable.
I have been to other U Haul locations and the service at this branch is the best.

It was $ 15 less then what I calculated. Honest people.

What a fantastic change of pace. I’ve rented a fair number of moving trucks in the past and often come away feeling slightly dirty and ill-​treated.
Not so at this U-​haul location. There was a little mix up at booking and it turned out that I couldn’t keep the truck for a full 24 hours, consequently I had to return it late at night and couldn’t find an open gas station. I agonized about it for a minute but resolved to just pay the refueling fee rather than spend any more time driving around. ((It had been a LONG day.))
I telephoned the office the next day, spoke with Dylan ((Who helped me very efficiently the day before at the desk)) and he explained that they just covered the fuel fee for me as a courtesy for asking me to return it before the 24 hours was up. It wasn’t a lot of fuel, nor money, probably… but the courtesy and thoughtfulness of the gesture bought my loyalty. Well done, guys!

I’ve done several equipment rentals here over time, and had a hitch installed by them. They’ve always done a good job, had what I needed, and their prices are good. Always always make a reservation if you’re moving during the summer or any other busy time of year (you can reserve on line, its easy and painless).

This is in regards to your store located on 48^th and Powell St. in Portland, OR:
Never have I received such poor customer service in my life such as what I witnessed on May 13^th, 14^th, and May 16^th. Upon securing a U-​haul truck online, I proceeded to pick the truck up on the 13^th, where I witnessed a young female who was talking on her personal cell phone while helping a customer as she didn’t know what she was doing. The transaction that occurred that day went smoothly for me, however, the next day when I returned the truck, I was standing in line to return the keys and an employee called me over… and asked me if I needed help. I told him I was returning a truck and he said he was new and then he asked his co-​worker who was also new what to do. Eventually about a half hour later I was finally helped as I witnessed these two new employees who did not know what they were doing bounce back and forth between customers all the while ignoring me and skipping me by asking other customers for help after me. I witnessed phone calls from other customers asking questions and them being put on hold with one employee saying «just leave them on hold» which they did indefinitely. I finally got out of there with my bill. Needless to say, I was extremely frustrated by the way your employees handled the entire transaction.
I returned the 16^th on a Saturday because I had a billing question where I witnessed the same employees become angry with customers, swearing, and also bouncing back and forth between customers instead of helping one customer at a time. I received the biggest attitude from the one employee, simply because I had questions about my bill from a few days prior while swearing profanities when other employees were asking him for help about other customer problems.
I will never return to this u-​haul location, and next week when I need another u-​haul to move to my new condo… I will be driving out of my way to another u-​haul location and pray that the service is some what decent.
The u-​haul location at 48^th & powell st. is a complete circus. The employees are extremely unprofessional and clueless to customer needs. AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE.
