Windowwall

Windowwall is hands down the best hair salon in this town. Everyone there knows what they’re doing, especially my number one Bethany. I’ve always wanted the perfect khaleesi hair, and she made it happen. I’m in love.
PS: their music playlists really make me feel alive.
The whole experience is a must.

I highly recommend going to Windowwall salon! Kim and her team are masterly, innovative, and incredibly professional. My hair always looks so fresh and chic after every visit. Expect welcoming and friendly vibes… and they serve wine, if you desire! It is such a beautiful environment to have your hair done at Windowwall.

This is the worst Salon I have ever been to in my life. I was very clear that I did not want copper penny red hair and the owner did my hair herself and seemed very knowledgeable about products and hair but she is a TERRIBLE hairdresser. She brought out color swatches for me to chose from and I asked for the darker shade, she disagreed and spoke to her college about what she should do. The two started speaking about the color in terms of numbers and I was completely left out of the conversation. I thought she listened to me and used the darker color but instead she put the dark color on my roots and used the light color she liked on the rest of my hair. IT’S A DISASTER and I literally went to sleep crying. Before I left I told her I didn’t like it and she said, «It’s easier to add color then to lighten color» and she said on my next visit she would fix it. The next day when I tried to have her fix immediately since I look TERRIBLE she said her scheduler wasn’t in and I would have to call back the next day but that she was leaving town in two weeks and probably couldn’t see me until our next appointment in six weeks. I paid this woman $ 500 to totally and completely destroy my hair — I look like a clown and had to get it fixed somewhere else — DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON EVER!!!

This is actually a review for Aaron Lafrenz from NYC. He left us two years ago for Windowwall and I have been lost and my hair a mess every since.
So if you are fortunate enough to live in Portland — go get him to cut your hair… now.
The review:
Aaron is a god sent. I have thick hair and I am lazy! I don’t wash it with fancy shampoo, I don’t even brush it often, and I certainly don’t use any products… even still my hair looks fantastic!!!
He is a master with the scissor, and can cut it in such a way that as it grows its progresses into new hair styles! I have about three looks in the 4 – 5 month period and it never looks «grown out»!
I can easily go 4 months without a cut.
Love it. Miss him.

I absolutely loved my experience ay Windowwall with Kim (plus a color consult from Kelly, which I will definitely be going back for)!
I hadn’t had a real haircut in 4 years after shaving my head, and needless to say I was quite nervous. Kim made me feel totally comfortable and confident with the whole process and the end result was amazing. I couldn’t even believe this was my hair. I would recommend Windowwall to any of my friends and any perfect stranger. 10 stars!

Windowwall easily rivals the high-​end places in NYC or LA. It is the best high-​end salon in Portland, period. I spent several years searching around the city, trying many of the other places listed here, and then I found Kim Namanny — back before she named the salon Windowwall. Yes, I’ve been going there for that long (six years). My wife and now my kids go to Windowwall as well from time to time. Everyone there — Kim (the owner), Cher, Danielle, Aaron, and the newer stylists who I don’t know as well — is awesome and provides great service and stylish work. It’s a big, fun, airy, beautifully-​designed space too. You will get more than your money’s worth and have a great time at Windowwall as well. Try it!

Not only is the space itself beautiful but also the girls that work here are the best of the best, Kelly especially! I wanted to lighten just the ends of my hair a bit, but just ever so slightly. Kelly painted on my highlights in a way that made them look really natural and subtle. I was nervous about how the blonde color would turn out but Kelly knew just how to tone it after coloring it. My highlights turned out perfect. Kelly is definitely my go to girl.

I recently moved to #PDX and needed to find a great salon. Lucky for me it didn’t take long as my wonderful neighbor works at WindowWall. A quick look at the bios on their web site and I knew I was in exceptionally talented hands. I love being able to let artists do their thing with full faith in the end result. Kelly worked her magic on my color. I absolutely love the tones and vibrance it has. She made selections that are fun but also flatter my skin tone really well. Next up Aaron cut my hair. He’s a master. My hair has shape and bounce that feels so good.
The salon space is in a creative historic building. Literally a wall of windows over looking the city.
It’s a spendy experience but worth every cent. I will definitely be going back to see both Kelly and Aaron!

Got a cut from Danielle and have no complaints! The salon is in a beautiful location, very clean and great customer service. I was very happy with the way my hair turned out.

I have been going to this fabulous salon for 6 months now and have had the amazing opportunity sit in the chair of Aaron Lafrenz! He is a rare find and will soon be in extremely high demand. If you are wanting your hair cut in an open, clean, inspired space with professional, creative and extremely talented stylists — make an appointment.

Be warned: this is a VERY expensive salon. I had my hair done here a few weeks ago, and nearly fell out of the chair when I asked how much the total would be since the stylist was suggesting an add on treatment. Over $ 300 for my short hair to be colored and cut (without the treatment). My heart sank as it was double what I was expecting.
I was happy with the color but the cut wasn’t the greatest, and for that amount — I would expect close to perfection. It would be nice if they quoted a price when you call to make an appointment since they’re so expensive. I didn’t think my experience or hair was worth the money. I’ve had better for half the price.

Not the most polite people, so don’t be surprised if they are rude to you… here is a fair warning.

I moved to PDX from NYC last year and I have struggled to find a good hair stylist /​colorist here. I used to work in the industry and admit I’ve been lucky enough to have been in the hands of some of the world’s best hairdressers so I knew it wouldn’t be easy! After trying a few different people (all lovely by the way and reasonably priced — so refreshing after NY’s pricey salons!), a friend recommended Aaron Lafrenz who started working at Windowwall last year after a move from NYC (where we realized when we got talking that I’d had my hair cut a few times at his old salon in the east village). All I can say is that I am really pleased with his handiwork! I was bored with the cut and gave him a lot of latitude and got a great cut and went back for color which he also did a great job with. He fixed a previous effort by another colorist in PDX who left me with completely different roots etc.) and has just done a terrific job… I’ve been back a few times now and thought I would share how great he is! He’s also a super nice guy and a lovely person! The salon itself is not too big (which I like — very chill and not super hectic like some places) with a nice view and light and interesting décor. There’s parking in the back (I actually have to rent a Zipcar and drive there from where I live — it’s not in my ‘hood) which shows how much I believe in his talents as there are a bunch of salons near me in the Pearl, but no one has come close to his skills! Worth the money and the Ford building is probably a super easy location for a lot of people in the SE.

I’ve been here for two cuts and have seen two different stylists (Cher and Richard) and I’d give both of them five stars! In fact, I would venture to say that the whole staff here is beyond talented and able to do a bad ass job. Awesome shop, cool an fun people, stylists with talent and vision. Love these people.

I am the type of client who gives my stylist total creative freedom with my hair and have always allowed them to choose the right look for me. In order to have the confidence to operate with such blind faith, I have always sought out the best of the best wherever I have lived. Kim N. the owner of WINDOWWALL was referred to me by a good friend as soon as a moved to Portland several years ago. The moment we met it was clear that she «got me!» She loves the creative control, and I love how amazing she makes me look and feel every time I go in! She has become way more than just my stylist! Kim is an amazing listener, gives great feedback, and makes the entire visit feel like a great girlfriends retreat!
She and her entire team are second to none in PDX! Look no further!

I decided to go with pale pink for the first time from the bright red I had for years and stuck with the hair stylist that had always done it for me, just warning her to stay away from anything fuchsia — I wanted pale, baby pink. She decided to use a magenta dye to «counteract the orange from the red dye». Magenta and fuchsia are way too close for my comfort.
I saw Lowry a couple weeks later, and she told me to wait another month, but gave me a deep conditioning treatment and some Phyto products to use in the mean time. My hair’s health being more important than the awful color, I agreed and made my appointment.
I returned a month later and Lowry got to work. I couldn’t help but laugh at her worried expression when the lifter turned my hair blue. I told her not to worry, it wasn’t her mistake that got me here and I was willing to make a return trip to get the color right if it was needed. I chose her for a reason and I trusted her judgment.
Lo and behold, once the bleaching process and dye was done, it was a perfect match to the pictures I had shown her. I left so ecstatic. Having my hair messed up just makes me feel like there’s no reason to put any effort into anything else — why wear a cute outfit when my tri-​color hair will just ruin the look? Why even put on make up?
I truly couldn’t be happier. My hair is a perfect pastel, cotton-​candy pink. And it’s still full of life and bouncy and shiny somehow! Lowry did an incredible job and I can’t thank her enough. If it hadn’t been for another stylist’s mistake, I may never have gone looking for and found Windowwall.

Windowwall is modern, classy, and with it when it comes to current and timeless style.
Kim, the owner, has done an incredible job carving out the mold for a very fashion forward yet approachable salon space and carries products that smell like heaven AND are actually good for your hair! There has obviously been great thought and care put into her Windowwall creation.
Danielle is my stylist and I couldn’t be more pleased every time I have an appointment. She is knowledgeable, listens to you, but also uses her creativity to make your dome look so, so good. I have curly hair and loved how Danielle styled my hair; I am a little lazy when it comes to my hair, but decided I would give the style a shot. I however, couldn’t remember how she styled it, so I sent her an email and she replied in full detail with how to achieve that look. She is also a color master! Danielle is a really sweet and talented stylist with an eye for detail and style.
The space, the stylists, and the products all make Windowwall the best salon I’ve ever been to.

Windowwall is easily the best salon in Portland. I’ll admit, I’m biased.
I tried a lot of stylists in town before settling on one. Kim and her staff are artistically gifted, and technically trained. The salon carries top notch products too: Phyto, Kusco Murphy, Malin+Goetz, Kevin Murphy.
The thing that sets Windowwall apart, for me anyway, is the genuine care they put into making sure your hair looks great. It’s always fun to make the visit. I’m incredibly picky and I’ve never been disappointed.

You cannot go wrong at Windowwall. Each member is an expert at their craft and have a wealth of knowledge on how to keep your hair healthly.

A lot of different things come to mind when I think about Kim Namanny’s Windowwall…
Average hair salon is not one of them. If you’re looking for average, normal and mediocre, seek elsewhere.
Kim Namanny and Windowwall are nothing short of fabulous! You aren’t going just to get your hair cut, you are going to have an experience.
The space: Avant-​garde. It’s a loft space, so it doesn’t quite feel like a typical salon. It’s in the ford building, über creative types. It’s got huge windows, high-​ceilings, white white white… and more white, with tons of plants and foliage. Rockin’ music too. Very open layout, yet still feels warm and inviting. Think NYC.
The gals: Kim started the salon by herself several years ago and its taken off. Her youthful spirit and great passion for art is magnetic. Of course, she has recruited like-​minded individuals who are creative and eager to learn from her. Together they are an inspirational and unstoppable team, dedicated to fashion and art. You will not be disappointed.
The hair: Totally on point. Trendy, modern, classic, whatever you’d like. Windowwall Salon is know for producing some of the most forward-​fashion styles for pupular bands and boutiques like starfukr, frances may, etc. But if you are wanting just straight-​forward good, classic technique you’ll find it here too. Always edgy, yet chic.
The products: Morrocan Oil, Kevin Murphy, Olo fragances, Phyto, etc.
Heads up: Kim is always booked out far, so if your are wanting an appt. for 2013, I’d get on it now. Kim loves wine and anything vintage. :)
