Winningstad Theatre

This theater is okay. It isn’t as comfortable as Century movie theaters. There is an enchanting, though heavily packed lobby. Winningstad is in a building which excitedly holds many of Portland’s big theaters, not for movies, all under one roof.
I saw Thoroughly Modern Millie here. Seats were packed, but it was not aggravating as it is in the Burnish Theater. The lighting and wild west surrounding seating makes for an interesting show. I’d recommend a concession setting where there isn’t crowds lined up for one bartender. It’s also difficult to get out of those seats, but that is typical of old theaters.

As a degreed and experienced theatre professional, I was impressed with this facility (from the audience perspective). This is a very nice, modern studio facility. We sat on the first level (of what appeared to be three), and way off to the side. Though some of the sight lines were skewed, it didn’t disrupt our enjoyment of the performance too much. Sound (no mics… but there shouldn’t need to be in a space like this), lighting, and all other technical elements were great. The ushers were friendly, and the lobby provided a full bar with prompt service. Within walking distance of bars, restaurants, etc. Overall a fun night out while on a long weekend in Portland.

I saw a performance here as part of the jazz festival. The acoustics were a little off, but I am rating this 5 stars because FINALLY I have found a place to hear some music or theater but also have some privacy without an annoying couple or noisy children sitting next to us and ruining the experience. This privacy may be achieved by sitting in one of the box sections on the 2^nd or 3^rd tier. You will in no way compromise your viewing experience (in fact, it’s better in my opinion), your seats will be a little cheaper, and you have a set of seats all for you and your guests. The seating charts on the website a very helpful.

We have been here twice now for Third Rail Theater. They switch up the stage and layout for each play. The flexability of the layout is great for the plays. The seats in the balcony do not look comfortable as I looked up and people were hanging over the edge in order to see. Our seats on the floor were a bit cramped. This group used to perform in the World Tade Center which had wide seats with a lot of foot room. This place basic seats, tight and little leg room.

Been attending O C T for several years and love every play shown ! the cast and crew make it a special event every time. My daughter, now 4, enjoys dressing up for a family date! Thanks O T C

I love live theatre, especially when I can almost reach out and touch the performers. This stage is practically perfect.
It is a «black-​box» style theatre where the entire room is a stage. The main level has semi-​traditional seating on one side (12 rows of elevated seats), but the other three sides are only one or two rows deep. There are two balconies with only one or two rows, so almost everyone feels like they have a front row seat.
The last time I was here, I saw a Shakespeare play performed by the (now defunct?) Tygress Heart Shakespeare company. Recently I saw an Oregon Children’s Theatre production and the performance was great.
The main stage is roughly 16′ x 16′ and the actors almost never leave the stage. When they do, they are wandering through the theatre so the entire audience becomes part of the action. Fantastic way to keep your audience engaged.
The other benefit is that with only one or two rows, there is space for you to stretch your legs, not be too bothered by neighbors and if you need to step outside or take a fussy little one away from the action mid-​performance, you can do so without causing too much of a disruption.
This theatre is part of Hatfield Hall, which is a beautiful complex on Broadway. Wonderful murals, statues, artwork. Don’t forget to stand in the atrium and look up.
