Dragon’s Den

Years ago, this was the spot for comics. Now, it’s so different. I like to drop in from time to time and see if I can grab a coveted comic or two. The store didn’t have the same stature of comic book dominance like the good old days. It seems to be more focused towards card games like Magic the Gathering and Pokemon. If you’re into card games, that’s cool because you’ve found your new hangout spot. If you’re into comics, you may need to look someplace else.

The actual store itself is alright. It’s a hobby shop (of some sort) that sells and trades in things like games, comics, collectors items, ect. A nerd’s paradise, if you will…
But the reason why I’m giving this business such a low score is because of its customer service… I’ve had 3 bad experiences with this place, and it seems like all the workers there are not trained to handle customers efficiently.
All three times I went, this one guy, who I think is the owner, always seemed to have an attitude whenever you ask a simple question. This is both in person AND over the phone. (If they pick up) The attitude comes out whenever he has the inconvenience of repeating himself or answering a question that should be «obvious». He has that typical elitist nerd personality. Think Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
On top of this, they always seem to run out of money when you trade things in. I understand that it’s a local business and everything, but don’t advertise cash trade ins if you don’t have the money to take things in in the first place. Now some people might view this as nitpicking, but if you really think about it, there are other businesses that do the same thing this store does. If you can’t complete my transaction, then I can just go somewhere else. This also tells me that the store might possibly be struggling financially, and to be honest, I’m not surprised.
So all in all, if you’re looking for tournaments or things like that, you might like this store. The atmosphere of the place is actually pretty cool. But don’t expect much when it comes to dealing with the employees or going through a transaction because the items are pretty expensive, and the workers are kind of unpleasant. Just go to the Cex at the galleria instead. Hell, i would even choose GameStop over this place.

I’ve been going to Dragon’s Den for the past 17 years, I was disappointed today. When I asked for an adaptor for Super Nintendo to hook up to my tv, the nice young lady asked a coworker and he brought a power cord, I kindly said «Is this the one to hook up to the TV?» he said in a very snotty attitude «That’s not what you asked for!» Instead of just simply getting the av cord. I asked her if he was an employee and she said he’s the owner, As a business owner myself, I am a bit disappointed in his lack of customer courtesy, I’m the one driving 20 miles to give him my money.

This store is okay, though a large number of items in the store are completely overpriced due to the fact that it’s a local business. The comic selection is great, but if you’re looking for any vintage or gaming from the early 00’s just be aware of the prices listed. Other than that, as long as you’re smart about it, this is a good place to shop.

I’ve tried to set up a subscription list here for over the past month.
I originally set it up on Comixology and thought it was such a great easy to use system. I received my first e-​mail stating that my comics were available. I show up to grab them and the guy states that I’m not in the system yet but he’ll grab my comics and I’ll be set up for next time.
I come in again and my comics still weren’t held. Not an issue but this time the girl working the register says they’re having «difficulties». Not a problem they’ll be held next time.
On my 3^rd visit I come in, same situation. This time I write an e-​mail to the store as the girl working the register said she didn’t know what to say other than that they’re having technical problems with the system. I though MAYBE someone else could address the situation. I never received a response but I just assumed the situation would be rectified. Thankfully, all the comics I wanted were in the store.
On my 4^th visit I arrive and guess what? My comics weren’t held. The girl states I can go to the rack and grab what I want. So I head over and get my books, however, this time they don’t seem to have them all, or it’s just organized so poorly that I can’t really find what I’m looking for. I go back to the register and ask the girl if they have Saga or Secret Wars #2. She states if it’s not on the wall they don’t have it. I’m not sure how you’re out of two of the biggest releases that week but OK. I thought maybe she could point me in the right direction but I guess not.
So I really wanted to support this place which is a local business. There’s no place like this in the area. But I guess I’ll have to resort to online books or just put in a mail order subscription at Mid-​town or TFAW. Very disappointed with my experiences shopping here. Perhaps they’re better equipped to cater to the table top gaming crowd and the comics are just a secondary business.

I wouldn’t call this place a hobby shop it more of a tournament shop where you can get your stuff to play in the game. If anyone is looking for comics and action figures I would look elsewhere.

I’m not a gamer, first and foremost. But, I’ve been here many times for my boyfriends happiness. Great selection and very friendly staff. There’s always a game going on so ppl are always hanging out. If something isn’t in stock that you want/​need, they can order for ya.

I tried to do a check-​in here, from the middle of the store, and my phone said I wasn’t close enough to check in. Maybe I was in the area of effect of some «non-​detection» spell someone at a game table had cast?
Dragon’s Den is the best — maybe only — store of its kind in the area: comics, figures, video games, board and role-​playing games, and more. The only place that has a better selection of games is the Barnes & Noble at the other end of «Route 9 Strip Mall Hell,» but I’d prefer to buy it here if they carry it at both.

I’ve been going to this place for about 10 years now, and I don’t think I could write enough positive words to show just how much I love this place. Their selection of everything from NES systems to Xbox 360’s to nearly every card game booster packs to a fantastic assortment of comics keeps me going back frequently.
They have tournaments in most of the card games, and if it’s not officially held there, i guarantee you can find people for a pickup game since the tables are always up.
The staff is amazing, always helping, always cracking jokes. If you’re looking for a card/​video game/​comic store and are within about 30 – 45 minutes, go here. You’re gonna love it. I guarantee it.

Other than trades, the comic stock appears to be very recent editions. No longboxes of back issues for you to pick through. If you don’t see it and it is in print, they would be happy to get it for you.
I would give this a higher review if the facility was better. It’s rough when the AC is dead for the second month in a row during the summer.
Staff are some of the friendliest folks I have met at a comics/​gaming shop, EVER.

Wow, surprised no one else has reviewed this place yet… anyway, Dragon’s Den has been around forever (this particular one, at least 15 years). They were previously in a different location in the same strip mall, in a larger store, but relocated to the inside mall of Poughkeepsie Plaza.
They do have a great variety of hobby needs, from current comics, graphic novels, action figures, busts, statues, cards, card games, video games and systems, paint-​ball guns and accessories, miniature and role-​playing games, etc. The new (er) store is a bit cluttered and hard to find items in, I have to say. I can’t figure out their comic shelving, its sort of in alphabetical order, sort of in order of release… not really sure. They also host several game nights and tournaments, so maneuvering around the tables can be tough. Prices are ok on some items, others are a bit overpriced. Staff is usually helpful and friendly, at least. Overall, Dragon’s Den is a fun place to waste your paycheck.
