Encompassing 200 acres in Dutchess County, NY, Sprout Creek Farm is three entities, distinct, yet dynamically intertwined. It is a working farm, raising free-​ranging cows, sheep, goats, wild turkeys, guinea fowl, chickens, and pigs. It is a market, selling internationally award-​winning cheese and farm-​produced meats, as well as Hudson Valley milk, eggs, vegetables, crafts and gifts. And it is an educational center, offering day, weekend, and summer programs that help connect young people to the land, the seasons, and the plants and animals that co-​exist here in harmonious rhythm.

Sprout Creek Farm is a not-​for-​profit organization. We appreciate our staff and our volunteers! We are a place where a community of experienced teachers and farmers live and teach year-​round. They help children develop creativity and ingenuity while making a point of teaching children to see the value and rewards or real work in a nurturing and supportive environment.

We’ve found that the farm setting is a wonderful way to teach environmentally responsible ways of caring for animals, working the land, and living a simpler, more environmentally integrated way of life.

Established in 1982.

Sprout Creek Farm has been enriching the Hudson Valley community since 1982. Above all, our aim is to teach children and adults to love our fragile earth, to understand our connectedness to it, and thus to develop a passion for protecting its integrity. With so many years of farming and educational success, we look forward to welcoming you to our happy home.

Business Owner

Margo M. built the current iteration of Sprout Creek Farm over 30 years ago with care and love for the land and everyone who would inhabit it — animal and human alike! Revitalizing a prior school campus with a small army of volunteers, the group rebuilt, renovated, and reconstructed the buildings. The first animals were gifts from friends and soon the farm was up and running! Over the years, Margo has cultivated a mission of bringing farming education to children, connecting them with their agricultural heritage and giving them information on food production. Margo invites you and your family to stop by the farm today!

We went at the Farm in January right after new year. I didn’t expect much life on their since is winter but I really want to see the Farm since we order our cheese sometimes from them. We had a great and short time. Bought a lot cheese and some local meat. Look forward to go their again soon and order more cheese for the convent in NYC. Thanks

We’ve come here for Friday burger nights and it’s a blast. The cheese they make here is absolutely amazing (and when they put it out for burger nights I think I have more cheese on my bun than burger).
The place also runs a summer camp, which my kid has attended for 2 summers and my nieces for 7 summers. The camp is spectacular and exactly what city kids needs – splashing in a creek, feeding goats, making homemade bread, cheese, mint candies and dream catchers. My kid is in heaven when he is here and can’t wait to go back each year.
Well worth a trip to their market and if you have children, keep this place in mind for summer camp.

I just love this place so much!
I come from Brooklyn at least three times a year just to visit Sprout Creek Farm. I love the experience of walking around and enjoying the cats, the dog & the farm animals.
I never leave without a cheese tasting and purchase. The ice cream is ridiculously divine as well.
To top it off, the staff is super friendly & are happy to answer alllllllllll my questions about the cheese, the farm & the animals.

Brilliant experience. Delicious cheeses, lots of space for children to romp. Very low key — a true farm — but a very worthy destination if you want to know more about where (real) food comes from. Friendly staff. Richie was great!
One tip: If you plan to buy cheese and picnic, bring your own bread or crackers. They have a limited selection of flavored crackers.

Delicious cheeses and beautiful animals; what’s not to love? I always enjoy the variety of cheeses that they make right there on the farm. And the experience of walking around the grounds and seeing all the lovely animals they have there is always quite a pleasure. Sometimes when i go in to the shop, they have a beautiful little newborn calf sitting just on the other side of the door across the room. There is a window where you can look in and see them, and it’s really nice. I remember one day when I went in, I got to see a beautiful little newborn calf that had just been born that morning. It’s a great place to bring kids and it’s a great place for animal lovers. I would recommend taking a visit.

Came here for burger night on a Friday in September. We were on our way up to Western Mass, and wanted to make more of a to-​do of our pit stop than the usual McDonalds bathroom and coffee run. The property is so beautiful, welcoming, and well-​cared for. We felt comfortable and free to stroll around the lawn and check out some of the livestock and gardens with our baby. The burger was delicious and an incredible value for a farm to table meal ($ 12 for a burger, fries, and a kombucha or natural soda). We can’t wait to come back to Sprout Creek with our parents for another awesome family escape from the City!

We dropped by on a Saturday and our 3-​year old loved the place. My son instantly got interested in the cat, turkeys, chickens, goats and lambs with thick wool. Then, we headed over to the other side of the farm to meet cows and very cute baby goats. You can touch them, and they are very friendly. My son was a bit scared to touch, but later he waved and said, «Bye Bye Goat! See you later. Eat well. We have food at home~» Also, the Do-​Re-​Mi cheese was very nice.
We missed milking cow time, and they only have brunch once a month. We didn’t grab lunch before, so it would have been good if they serve brunch all the time~ Otherwise, I would recommend this place to my friends and relatives if they are nearby.

the final stop on the MTA Metro-​North Farm Fresh Tour was my favorite!
it was pretty sweet to visit a functioning farm that you could walk around and explore. chickens, turkeys, and pheasants roaming around freely. a barn where you can go play with the baby goats (who will attempt to eat your clothing, be careful).
the staff are friendly and can answer a variety of questions.
there is a building where they host events in, and next to that is the store. a variety of freshly made cheeses, meats, baked goods, and other products are on sale here. they make some of the dairy and meat products here, and others are from partner farms and businesses. try some samples!
a few tables set up outside so you could enjoy your meal there, taking in the rustic imagery.
we ended up purchasing a big bag of goodies here to munch on during the train ride back. the Doe-​Re-​Mi goat cheese was probably the best, though everything was delicious! I asked the staff, and they said that the cheeses would be fine to eat on the train, and would indeed keep for a few days. I suppose we would have found out, but we demolished the goat cheese within a day or two after.
I usually dismiss the whole organic/​artisanal/​local/​sustainable/​etc business model as being disingenuous, but that’s because every mustachioed transplant from Flyover Country living here on Mommy & Daddy’s money claims it for themselves. Here at Sprout Creek Farm, though, it’s honest and authentic, and the quality of the products shows. Three cheers for Sprout Creek, and I hope to make some returns (or at the very least, seek out their products in locations closer to home).

I would love to return to Sprout Creek Farm. This was my favorite stop from the MTA MetroNorth Farm Fresh tour, which is saying a lot considering the stop before included wine-​tasting. We were surrounded by cute animals – turkeys with impressive plumage, chickens, cows, and even a baby goat so cute that I just giggled when it tried to eat my scarf that my best friend had just brought me from Istanbul. It was nice to take-​in the surroundings – I hadn’t been to a farm like that in years – but the best part of our trip was those cheeses we ate when we had a little picnic on the ride home.
The real stand-​out was the Doe-​Re-​Mi goat cheese was outstanding. We devoured it on various tasty crackers and then I used some of the leftovers to make pastries with nuts, honey and apple (from our apple-​picking earlier on our trip) the next day which were delicious as well. I must find out how to acquire that cheese in these parts!

I must admit a little biased we bought our home to be near this educational farm, summer camps for kids age 7 to 16. The staff are fantastic people. This place would make a vegan turn into a carnivore, the animals are loved and cared for by hundreds of children every year and the meat sold is from healthy animals that needed to be put down. Waste not want not. The milk for the cheeses is from naturally nursing cows. the calves are fed with their milk. They even make ready to heat and eat meals. Fresh eggs from truly free range chickens !

How could you not instantly fall in love with this place? As you pull down the rural country road that leads to Sprout Creek Farm the first thing you’ll notice are the cows, sheep and goats that wander the property. A small and quaint herb garden adorn the front of the property along with the event calendar to let you know what is going on during the upcoming months. You just get the feeling that something good is going on at this place…
As you round the corner looking for an entrance the «Market & Creamy» sign calls for you and hints of the wonderful things to be found inside. One of the first things you’ll notice are the beautiful slate cutting boards with numerous cheese varieties sitting under glass. The attentive staff quickly welcomed us to the farm and offered a tasting of their cheese as well as a detailed explanation of each offering. Whether it’s a cow or goats milk, a hard cheese or soft brie like variety this place has it all. In addition to cheese (at an incredible price) Spout Creek Farm also offers gelato, local jams, honey and other local goods. For such a small looking operation I was amazed that they produce over 40,000 pounds of cheese per year!

I visited Spout Creek Farm on one of Metro-​North Railroad’s «Fall Harvest Wine, Cheese & Apple Picking Weekend» discount rail packages. If you live in a city and would like to take a break from the crowds, I would suggest taking a day to explore this farm. Sprout Creek is an educational farm that provides an opportunity for children and adults to learn about daily farm life by spending a day on a farm – «Farmer for a Day Program». The farm is populated with a small herd of goats and cows, and there are pigs and chickens. And while none of the animals here will ever make their way to someone’s Thanksgiving dinner table, the goats and cows do provide milk for the farm’s creamery, where the cheeses are made. The cheeses sold by the creamery provide financial support for the farm. Sprout Creek runs a small retail shop where you can buy cheeses and sausages to take home. These are the same cheeses that they sell to retailers like Whole Foods Market and Murray’s Cheese in NYC. I would strongly recommend picking up some these cheeses to take home. It’s already been a month since I visited this farm and I’m still talking about how fresh and flavorful the cheese tasted.
At Sprout Creek they also grow a few seasonal vegetables to provide for the farm year-​round. On certain days children can help pick the vegetables, or collect the eggs. And on others they can help milk the cows. A visit to Sprout Creek is a day well spent.

OMG, the place stinks, I mean, what do you expect, it’s a cheese-​making farm! However, once your nose adjust, be prepared to have a free tasting of the most amazing cheeses in the world, all of them are being offered and I liked all except for the one they started this year, it’s apparently, made with beer and the taste and smell was just too much for me. We have grabbed three of the varieties offered and also, bought some artisanal wild boar sausage and smoked chicken breast for our picnic at a winery. I am planning to get more cheese from this place over the Internet

Walking around Sprout Creek farm reminds me of walking around my grandmother’s and great-aunt’s farms as a kid. There are barns and gardens all over, as well as the animals — cows and calves, farm cats, pigs, and of course the goats.
The store has expanded its line of products. There are now 3 refrigerators instead of 1. Besides the one for their own products, there’s a second one for a line of homemade salamis, and a third with Hudson Valley Duck products, including (brace yourself)… DUCK BACON!!! They’ve also added a cooler where you can get a dish of ice cream, or take home a pint of local Adirondack Creamery ice cream.
Get their local eggs too… you want free-​range chicken eggs? The yolks of these eggs are ORANGE. They sell duck eggs now too.
But of course the big draw is still the homemade goat cheese. I counted at least 10 varieties available to sample, probably more.

This farm participates in the MTA/​Metro-​North/​Dutchess County Tourism’s «Farm Fresh» tours, (
) which is how I visited, but it’s also open to the public, and welcomes school groups, etc.
It’s a real farm, but it’s definitely set up to welcome the public. You can even stay in a cottage there and participate in workshops. It’s sort of like the platonic ideal of what everyone wishes a farm was. The 18th-​century buildings are rustic and charming, and the scenery is gorgeous.
We visited with friendly (and non-​smelly!) milk goats, one-​week-​old baby calves, and had farm staff show us the dairy cows and explain basic info on raising goats. There were also chickens, turkeys and a bunch of friendly cats running around.
The small market sells meat and cheese produced on-​site. We had a cheese tasting, and it was all delicious. They also sell some kick-​ass ice cream! They don’t make it there, but it’s local:

I love local foods and this farm yields some fantabulous cheeses!
This is a great farm to visit and learn about free and wild frm product.
I buy all my ricotto from SC and fresh makes such a difference to the discerning palate.
Learn about cheese crafting from an expert and support our local farms!!!
They have some realy nice giftie options… head over to one of the local wineries and make it a wine and cheese fest, so worth the trip!
