History

Established in 2001.

Poway Braces has been providing excellent orthodontic results for the past 11 years. Throughout this time, upgrades to the office have now resulted in a comfortable, enjoyable, and friendly atmosphere in which to have your teeth aligned and smile enhanced.

Business Owner

Dr Thomas has 23 years experience as an Orthodontist. He is a member in good standing with the American Association of Orthodontists, California Dental Board, Progressive Orthodontic Study Club, and President of the Southern California Damon Study Club.

He also frequently presents current state of the art information at the Damon Forum (2006 – 2008) and travels across the US, Canada, and South America teaching the benefits of the Damon System in Orthodontics.

Dr Thomas grew up in San Diego, graduating from USD in 1983, and selected to give the commencement address upon graduation. He attended Georgetown University for both his Dental and Orthodontic training. Orthodontic education is 2 additional years after 4 years of Dental school. He graduated in the top 1% of his Dental Class.

Office staff was polite when I called to schedule a consultation. Waited about 45 minutes to see the doctor after they took all the x-​Rays and pictures. Doctor jumped into the «drill» and plan before even looking at our pictures. He spent a total of 6 minutes with us during the appt and we spent the balance of our time with the office staff. Despite my reservations about our first experience, we scheduled our appointment to put braces on our daughter in two weeks. We received a call the day before our scheduled appointment from someone at the office stating the doctor did not feel she was quite ready for the braces. I had already taken off work that day and made arrangements for childcare. I feel that if the doctor would have taken a bit more time and given us his full attention at the first visit that we would have never wasted time with their cancellation.

Dr. William Thomas is amazing!
We went through 3 other Orthodontists with many complications and problems for our son from 2 locations in Denver & 1 in Northern California.
As a family we were so frustrated and upset at how we had been treated by these experiences that we were at our «wits’ end’.
A family member referred us to Poway Braces where Dr. Thomas evaluated our sons past history and was able to fix and repair many problems that prior Orthodontists had done.
The atmosphere of this office is very clean. His staff is proficient, friendly, inviting, fun and always «smiling».
Dr. Thomas is patient, kind, knowledgeable and very professional. He gives an honest diagnosis while educating you on how to properly care for your braces.
Afford-​ably priced and HIGHLY recommend!
Our fabulous experience has us driving all the way from Northern California to Poway every few months just to be seen by Dr. Thomas.
We plan to continue treatment with him for our other children as well.

The doctor gave me some attitude which was a complete surprise. He will not be getting my business now.

4 stars for the effort Dr Thomas has made on trying to keep me a happy patient. I did have a bad experience in the past but I’ve been told that Dr Thomas has revamped his office. I had a baby so I have yet to come in to correct a tooth that is still misplaced but I’m happy that Dr Thomas is so insistent that I come in so he can perfect it for me. Now I’m just waiting for my opportunity to come in and have a break from my little girl :)

Not impressed with waiting times and follow ups: we had a consult when I signed contracts and then cancelled braces being put on due to scheduling conflicts.
They never called to follow up, they started charging my Credit card before the braces went on my son (neary six months later)
He had them put on, and said the technician didn’t listen when things hurt. Braces were too loose and we had to come back a day later.
Honestly, it feels like an assembly line of kids; so forget personal attention.
They were right about the recommendation regarding some teeth extracted with one of my kids. But we shall see end result. I think focus is that (results) not patient comfort or personal attention. It’s numbers.

Our daughter had very straight teeth but had an alignment issue. We were initially told that the braces would probably be on less than a year. Two years later, they were still on and they ended up yanking the teeth forward. My daughter was so upset; we tried being patient.
Billing practices were awful, we never quite understood the billing system and how to pay down the bill because there didn’t appear to be a subtotal of current payments except at the first visit. My daughter complained that the all «blonde» staff was very chatty regarding personal and unprofessional comments to each other while working on their Damon fueled teens.
My daughter returned to her personal dentist whose staff told us that they had heard similar complaints from other patients. My neighbor’s daughter had a laundry list of complaints as did a teammate of my daughter’s. Oh and the waiting room was always tiny and jam packed with a wait time that was sometimes long. It felt like a Costco type environment.
(Imagine our surprise when our 2nd daughter needed braces and we went to another orthodontist with traditional braces; her wait time was and has been 0 to 5 minutes, every single time! Her current ortho is on Pomerado and she really likes him. He’s efficient, proficient and punctual. Support staff is really good. Second daughter’s braces were paid in less than a year’s time AND, we were always given what the current balance was on the bill. Additionally her Ortho continues to see her on a monthly basis. Second daughter’s teeth are coming in beautifully with traditional braces-​she picked navy blue bands today.)
My youngest son needs braces, we’ll pass on Dr. Thomas.

They book so many appointments that if they run out of time they want you to comeback another day. And if they do get you into one of their chairs you can wait for over an hour. My daughter got her braces removed (these were already her adult braces) and her teeth were pushing forward. Dr. Thomas said they were fine. We went back a year later and the Dr. agreed that the teeth were pushing forward but told us we should do another round of braces. Really? I won’t even get into all the issues that I had with their accounting office. They are non-​responsive at best, incompetent at worst. This is a terrible orthodontist’s office. I don’t really enjoy writing bad reviews (most of mine are positive) but hopefully this saves some folks alot of aggravation/​disappoinment or perhaps motivate this Dr. to get his act together (especially his admin staff).

The Damon system works! Since there are fewer office visits with the Damon braces, then I would say that overall there is less pain. And the results are fantastic!
Other orthodontists said I would need surgery, but Dr. Thomas was able to completely fix my bite without it! The results are amazing and everyone who sees my before and after pictures are astounded. My smile is wider thanks to the Damon system.
I will admit that there were a few office staff that I didn’t like during my time as a patient, but the worst one has left which makes things much better. And the majority of the staff are very good.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Thomas and the Damon system! There’s nothing better out there!

I had two daughters as patients of Dr. Thomas, one going through two phases, the other only one phase (palate expander). The first daugher spent about 25% more time in her braces than expected, had a «Herbst» appliance that, when removed, tore off enamal (never completely recovered from), and 2 years following removal of the braces her teeth are moving back where they were (and she IS diligent about wearing her nighttime retainer). The other daughter only had the palate expander process — I will NOT be taking her back for the next phase. Other than the specific issues each daughter faced, the office both times messed up the insurance processing (even charging me AND my insurance company at the same time); it was next to impossible to schedule appointments for school age kids without taking them out of school; I rarely got any feedback from the providers after each visit. We will be looking for another orthodontist.

Damon braces were quite uncomfortable and painful. Dr Thomas was quite insensitive to my pain and discomfort. 1 star… after all his office provides free toothbrushes.

I originally went to Dr Thomas as my teeth had moved even after having braces in my teen years. As an adult and with a career in sales I felt that I was not completely happy with my smile and I decided on the invisiline route. I am now in my 3rd week and have already noticed a difference. I was so impressed with the staff who are friendly and professional. Its very clear that Dr Thomas is sincerely there to provide excellent treatment in the best possible environment with the utmost respect for his patients and the best results.

At age 19 and prior to any dental work at all, I was missing both permanent upper cuspids (canine teeth) and still had tiny baby teeth in their place. My dentist and I had decided on getting implants placed after first having my teeth straightened. I had gone to an orthodontist (not Dr. Thomas), who, after 1.5 years, managed to not only NOT straighten my teeth, but also make my baby teeth wiggly, so that I became worried about them falling out before all my dental work was done.
In February 2007, I then went to Dr. Thomas, who not only apologized for my previous experience with the other orthodontist, but worked so well with my other two dentists (the restorative – Dr. Gordana Milatovic and periodontist – Dr. James Sinks), that the result after another 1.5 years of braces – was indeed perfect.
I also liked how he used Damon Brackets. They’re just like typical brackets except it has a slide-​lock mechanism to keep the wire in place, rather than the rubber elastics. The Damon Brackets were also a lot less painful. I had the tooth-​colored ceramic brackets with my original orthodontist, and those were nightmares trying to keep white. Anything and everything you ate would stain the elastics.
My only complaint was that my treatment was originally estimated for 8 – 10 months (when it took 16). But looking at my teeth now (about 1 year after having everything done) I am extreeeemely happy, and wouldn’t have it any other way.
His practice is extremely clean, organized, and well managed; I’d only wait maybe 5 minutes before I would be seen for my appointment. Dr. Thomas and his assistants are very kind and professional. I once had issues with appointment scheduling (as I was a full-​time college student in Orange County at the time, and had trouble making it to adjustments midweek), but he was very accommodating with Friday afternoon appointments when I told him my situation.
I would highly recommend anyone who needs braces to seek his office first, just to make sure it gets done correctly the first time.

Dr. Thomas is professional. He did my braces about six years ago. Since then I’ve referred my son’s best friend and my accountant’s son. There is unanimity; all my referrals are very satisfied. My particular case was quite difficult as it occurred in my 50s, thus, we coordinated the complete job with two other dentists and their own specialities. My principal dentist, Graham Simpson of San Diego, a very respected practitioner for some three decades here, with no involvement on my part sent a laudatory letter to Dr. Thomas regarding his work on me. I thoroughly agree. What most surprised me was Dr. Thomas’s personal attention on each and every visit. Plus, he had no rush to get me either out the door or over with treatment.

I’ve been a patient of Dr Thomas for over a year now and very pleased with the service.
Before I started the treatment, I have done my homework and got quotes from several orthodontists. Dr Thomas was recommended by one of my friends. After checking out the office and getting a quote (which BTW saved me some money) I decided to go with him.
The staff is always friendly and professional. Dr Thomas, although busy, is trying hard to please everyone around. Yes, there is some wait time involved once in a while but I would be more concerned if there wasn’t one. Besides, the routine appointments are usually very quick.
The experience was not completely pain-​free, but Dr. Thomas made it as close to it as possible. I do not think I’d get a better service, or treatment anywhere else.
Bottom line — do your homework before you pick you orthodontist. Definitely give Dr. Thomas a shot.

I’m 46 and on my second orthodontic tour in my life. Dr. Thomas is highly skilled and uses state-​of-​the-​art Damon systems, which are much better than the old fashioned brackets of yesteryear. His office is lovely and the staff is helpful and professional. I would highly recommend him to anyone of any age considering braces or other orthodontic work.

Dr. Thomas is a great Orthodontist. I just got my braces on 5 months ago. I am 23 years old with a open that needed surgery but Dr. Thomas is able to close it and align my teeth without surgery.
Pros: Look the guy is a smart dentist and knows his practice. He really cares about you as a patient and doesn’t look at you as a number or dollar sign. (Whereas my experience with Dr. Hirsch was «okay we can fix it lets you started and talk to my finance office»)
His staff is really nice. They talk to you and actually remember you as a person.
His initial consultation is off the charts. He takes X-​rays and sits down and explains what you need to do and how he can fix it for atleast a good 20 to 30 minutes for free. (trust me braces could be scary because you dont know the person and its a large monetary expense however you can trust the guy you just get that feeling).
Super flexible (in house financing) no interest. I am in school so its hard to pay the lump sum so Dr. Thomas lets me make payments.
Cons: I wish my dental insurance would pay for my teeth (haha)

Dr Thomas is one of this country’s finest orthodontists.
When our 13 year old daughter needed braces, Dr Thomas was recommended by friends and other parents /​classmates time and time again. Our daughter actually looked forward to trips to Dr. Thomas’ office! The entire experience was very positive. Dr. Thomas, and his wonderful staff, always took the time to answer our questions and discuss our daughter’s progress in layman’s terms. After 16 months, our daughter now has a picture-​perfect smile and, probably more importantly, a strong self esteem thanks in large part to Dr. Thomas’ orthodontia talents and decades of experience.
