I am absolutely gutted to find out this little oasis in Princeton has closed down! WHYYYYY!!! NOOOO!!! I want to thank all the staff for the incredible experiences I’ve had here over the years. Everyone rocked! and I only wish this wasn’t so. I wish you all the very best of everything wherever you are

Just passed there this weekend and they are CLOSING UP June 15^th for good. Out of Business and building has For Sign outside now.

I love this place, i went here last year for a soak in the hot tub it was awesome. The staff was very friendly. But sadly on their website they announced they will be closing for good on June 15,2015.

I just received an e-​mail message they they are closing. So sorry. This was one of my favorite places.

I can’t speak for the massages, as they were fully booked, but our experience with the soak was a thorough disappointment. We arrived about 5:30pm and were the only soaking guests, so the employee suggested we use the public area. We were casually told that the wood fired sauna wasn’t on but that it was no big deal because it was warm out, and that the outdoor shower wasnt yet operational because they were in a ‘transition period’. Their public bathing area consisted of a single tub, only slightly larger than a regular backyard hot tub, and had a layer of fallen leaves and dead bugs on the surface.
Essentially we were charged $ 23 each to sit in a hot tub for half an hour. We got out after 10 minutes.
This is not an onsen, its a massage parlor with a hot tub and Japanese themed décor. If you’ve got a hot tub or a friend with one, or have ever been to an actual onsen or even a regular bathhouse, don’t bother going here.

I had been to Onsen many times over the year, and it was one of my favorite places for relaxation, but after my last experience I will never return. I live in New York City and as I had plans to be in the Princeton area Monday, I wanted to come early so I could visit Onsen for a soak and massage. I found they were closed Monday, so I actually decided to stay the night and come in Tuesday morning. After leaving a voice mail requesting an appointment, I read on the website that their soaking area was closed on Tuesday. At that point, I called back to cancel and decided it would be easier to go somewhere in the city. The woman told me it was a mistake on the website that they needed to update, and the tubs would in fact be open Tuesday.
After staying in the Princeton area last night and driving nearly 30 minutes to Onsen, when I arrived I was told they had a «power outage» and that they had moved my massage earlier and refunded the soak fee. Knowing their sauna was wood fired, I asked if that was running, and was told that, unfortunately, that too was out of service. I am convinced that this amazing «coincidence» couldn’t be a coincidence at all, and the woman had told me there was a mistake on the website simply to keep me from canceling the massage appointment (which, by the way is much more expensive than the soak). I went out of my way to visit Onsen for the soak/​sauna experience (I can get a massage anywhere in the city), and am extremely disappointed that this establishment would disrespect customers in this way just to book a short-​term profit. They need to know that when running a business, your reputation is more important than one sale.

Awesome place to sit in the hot tub and look at the stars. When I went, there was snow on the deck to rub on your face if you got to warm. The sauna is very nice as well.

This was my first time at a spa of any sort. i went with a friend to celebrate her birthday in one of the private soaking tubs. I’m a simple gal so I was really surprised at both how nice and inviting the spa was and how comfortable I felt out of my element.
Reception was warm and friendly, the locker rooms were incredibly clean. I actually looked forward to the shower after our soak because of the cleanliness of the shower stalls.
The soaking tub was awesome — again super clean which is obviously important. We booked an uncovered private pool which means it was just for the 2 of us but it was open to the elements. Even though it was drizzling (freezing rain even) the uncovered pool was perfect because the brisk air kept us from overheating in the warm pool. Reception brought cold water out to us when we first got in but after that we were left alone until our time was up.
What really sealed the deal for me is that they offer robes in sizes up to 3x (I had brought my own anyway). Choosing where to spend money as a plus size consumer is always a bit tricky — why spend my money if no one is thinking about my needs? But seeing the robes in the back let me know that they are committed to offering their services for a range of customers. I will not hesitate to come back. In fact, a friend has already booked her bday celebration there for a group of us in March.

My review is specific to their maternity/​prenatal massage — I don’t frequent spas and I don’t usually pamper myself unless there is a problem that needs to be fixed, but during my pregnancy I have searched all over the place for good maternity massage — there are not many options around this area. I finally found this place on Unilocal.
One chilly day in the fall, I started to have this excruciating pain in my lower back area during my 2^nd trimester, it was a Friday night so there is no way to get a dr’s appointment the next day, I called Onsen the next morning to ask for a massage on the same day, they were able to give me the choice of a male or female therapist that afternoon, given the amount of pain I was in, I chose the male therapist (Mike) for a deep massage, Mike listened to my problems and really focused on my lower back, what a difference that 1 hour made! I left feeling so much better and the back pain was gone the next week.
The second time I had a maternity massage was late in my 3^rd trimester, this time with Ellen. I was a bit suspicious when they were not able to give me the choice of a male therapist (again, I called late in the day and gave them very short notice). This time I was having terrible pain in my right arm and shoulder, it was so bad I couldn’t sleep at all the previous night. Ellen worked wonders! She was very patient and knows exactly where the pressure points are, after one hour with Ellen that evening, I soundly slept through the night.
The maternity massage costs $ 130 per session before tax and tips so they are definitely not cheap, but when you are in so much pain like I was during pregnancy, it’s a life saver. What I love the most about this place is that they are so conveniently available and they do a wonderful job.

A wonderful charming place. Staff is discrete but attentive. Private and quiet atmosphere lends to a wonderful, relaxing experience. We will be back :-)

When you live in an area for 30 years it’s a treat when you find something new. It’s a gift when you find something new that is also meaningful, relaxing and special to spend your time doing. Onsen is just that and a true treasure in the Princeton area. My (teenage) daughter and I spent a Friday evening here and I highly recommend it as a way to reconnect with yourself and whoever you go with. It’s a beautiful atmosphere from the warm way you are greeted at the door and the visual warmth throughout all of their rooms. The facility is impeccable clean, relaxed and free of pretense. The welcoming approach and encouragement to relax in the facility before and after treatment is an added bonus. We enjoyed a 30 min soak in a private tub area and found the open use of the free standing sauna building such a great compliment as well. Relaxing in the meditation room (which was used on this night as a client lounge) after the soak gave us time to visit and talk and transition gently to heading back home. Availability of hot and cold tea encourages using this room to socialize and visit with whomever you’ve come with or relax on your own. A visit to Onsen is actually a great «date night» idea or morning/​night with friends or family alternative to a coffee shop visit. Likely more meaningful.
I think it’s important to mention how unique the setting is — this 1700’s building has been beautifully restored and the original wide plank floors and molding add to the warm atmosphere.
The services have a good range in price so you can enjoy Onsen at all price points. We will be trying their Yoga Classes next.
I highly recommend you try out Onsen. I think one visit will make you a regular client as I predict is has for us. It’s really a lovely place.

Just had the most incredible Mother’s Day thanks to a wonderful 30 minute private soak and a spectacular purity facial! It was so relaxing, the perfect way to be pampered. The hand and foot massage was such a nice surprise. It wasn’t just a «token massage» there was a lot of time spent doing that :) thanks Catrina for an awesome experience!

Absolutely my favorite spa in NJ. I love the zen atmosphere inside and the incredibly relaxing outside. There is nothing more relaxing after an amazing massage than a hot soak under a blue sky with the smell of burning cedar from the sauna and the swishing of the bamboo leaves in a light breeze. Literally heaven.

I received a gift certificate from my son two Christmases ago. It took me a while to book an appointment but once I booked a private soak and massage I wondered what took me so long. I continue to book massages & soaks — they are so great! For my recent anniversary I booked a couples private soak and massages and my husband just loved it so much he wants to continue to go to Onsen. It is truly a wonderful, calming & relaxing place. The place is clean and the staff is great!

This place is definitely a treasure. I have driven past this building for many times in the past years and decided to stop by to get a gift card for my mom because of the great Unilocal reviews. My mom and I were so pleased and glowing after our experiences that we were planning for our next visit the second we left. My mom had the moon package and I chose the soak and sauna. The soak left me with a glow for hours afterward, and left me relaxed for the whole day. The place is beautiful and unique, and is not an opportunity to be missed.

I usually go for a massage, but I’ve also gotten the occasional soak. Very relaxing, peaceful atmosphere. Prices are on par with direct competitors as well.

I’ve recently started frequenting Onsen for my monthly facials with Mackenzie. I’ve also done the private soaks at Onsen and it is a very unique, enjoyable experience. Mackenzie is a great aesthetician. My skin has definitely improved since working with her. I also like that Onsen gives you a discount if you book your next appointment while you’re checking out.
The only complaint I have is that the locker room is tiny and the showers are not so luxurious, but otherwise I love this spa.

So glad to have found this place and gave it a try. Took my jet lagged bff here and we were both impressed because it’s REALLY hard to find a nice day spa in NJ that isn’t a complete rip off.
The place is very relaxing and the staff is welcoming. I was impressed with all the amenities in the locker room and the robes are very comfy! They provide more amenities than most 5 star spa. I did a soak and massage (Wind) package because it seemed a better deal than just soaking alone. I have done spas all over the world and this is one is pretty good because you get to relax before and after the massage. So tired of going to massage places that charge $$$ for a massage without half the amenities of this place. My package ended with a choice of drink and I had the fresh squeezed orange mango juice, so good!
Brian did my massage, and he was professional with great techniques.
I wish the water was a little warmer, or it would be great if they had onsen with various temperature like i’ve seen in other asian spas.
They really deserve kudos for the amazing job they do keeping the locker room floor dry, neat, and stocked because they were kinda busy and I took a few towels, walked around dripping wet before soaking and when i came back from treatment, the locker room was cleaned up and re-​stocked with towels. These little things make all the difference for a relaxing experience.
Can’t wait to bring my hubby back.

Came here on Sunday for a private soaking and sauna. The atmosphere here is excellent; very zen and relaxing. Unfortunately, I don’t think the water was hot enough but still enjoyed the surroundings in the Spa Garden. Although the soaking was a bit of a disappoint, the sauna was amazing! It felt sooooo good after getting out of the sauna and we would definitely come back just for that. =)
Side notes: Upon reservation, you’re advised to come 15mins beforehand to enjoy the amenities (i.e. shower prior to entering the Spa Garden). They have robes, towels, slippers, shower caps, cutips, shaving cream, shaving blades, combs, cotton balls, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. No lotion, so bring your own or buy one of their products.
