Madeira Liquors

My all time favorite liquor store! The women who run the place are wonderful! Every time I go in we chat. They are dog friendly too so they always have a cookie for my dog Wiley. Once you get to know the family they’ll always have something you want. For example. I have a specific type of wine I like, some how that wine always finds it’s way into the fridge. They stock up on it for me. Great store, great prices, great family. Over all a fun place to visit. It’s a small store but you’ll find a wide variety of products. It’s a little crowded so get ready to be comfy with your fellow shoppers.

Very sweet people working here. They also have bargain specials which are fun. Cheaper than most places in the area.

This is a great little liquor store jam packed with just about anything you’ll need. Owned by a sweet Portuguese family, you know you can get any Portuguese wine you need here. The service is great! There’s a great selection of craft beers and spirits as well. Easy to stop in with street parking (hard to find on the East Side sometimes). Great hours too — even in a snow storm, they are open. Definitely a neighborhood staple!

The most lovely place! Family owned, so friendly, exceedingly knowledgeable about all of their stock and always willing to make recommendations. Reasonable prices and SUPER deals on cases of beer when the seasons are over. Great local business to support!

Seemingly endless stock, amazingly nice owners, great hours, and an excellent location.

Not only is it really convenient to have a neighborhood liquor store one block away, but on top of that to have a great craft beer selection with some rare bombers of beer in the mix and a pretty extensive wine and liquor collection in a tiny well sorted apartment sized space, it couldn’t get any better. But, it can because Madeira’s is also owned by a local family that is both knowledgable of product AND total sweethearts. I am all about supporting local business, having friendly conversation and scoring some great alcohol finds at a good price all at once!

I love these ladies, so nice. They know your brand and are great to talk to. It’s nice to see a family run, local business in the liquor trade.
I’d go to Madeira all day over a bigger, wholesale place.

I really like Madeira, but I always forget about it! Whenever I remember and stop by, I am always so glad that I did! As noted by other reviewers, it is a super small space that is jam packed, but they have an awesome selection of beer and wine and very fair prices. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. You really can’t ask for more in a neighborhood liquor store!

If you’ve ever been in this place you’ll understand why I’m so shocked at the amount of variety they manage to cram into such a small space. It’s honestly amazing. I used to make the trek out to the bigger liquor store in Seekonk, but after a while, it seemed like their inventory just never changed. Now that I’m living closer to Madeira, I’m kicking myself for no going there more.
Every single time I go there, they have a beer I’ve never seen before. Plus, they always have the old standbys like Narraganssett. They have samples every (or most) Friday afternoons, and the staff/​owners are always friendly and nice. Plus, I just sort of get a kick out of the notion of a family-​run liquor store – not sure why. I was in there recently, and it seemed like they have six family members behind the counter, just hanging out watch Portuguese tv. It’s like going to a friend’s house to buy beer.
In addition to the great selection of beer, they also always have what you’re looking for in terms of liquor. I haven’t bought much wine there, so I can’t speak to that, but every other base is pretty well covered. The prices are also really fair, and the narrow aisles make this place seem a bit like a treasure trove. It’s just a great store with everything you want or need.

This is my go-​to spot for vinho verde, madeira, porto and other Portuguese wines (above average selection at a good price point). They have a decent selection of craft beers and other types of wine as well. Helpful service, no fuss.

This is my favorite liquor store on College Hill.
If Campus Fine WInes is too stuffy for you, and Darwin’s too eccentric, then this is your place. There are a few women who run it, and they are nothing but nice and helpful. All you need to do is ask, and they’ll be more than helpful to point you in the direction of what your looking for.
Their prices are quite fair, and they have a fantastic wine selection. What really gets me about Madeira’s is the selection of those big bottles of wine. Often, liquor stores only offer a pitiful variety of these gems, but Madeira’s has a TON. for a college student looking to get drunk economically, this is a must.

This store has pretty much everything you could want. Good location on Ives. The layout may make you a little claustrophobic but it’s a solid option if you happen to be in the area

The staff, selection, and prices make Madeira a pleasure to shop at. I go for the wine — a nice range of prices, including a lot of bottles in the $ 8 – 12 range (and the even cheaper vinho verde, my current favorite).
The shop is family-​owned and the staff is very friendly. They frequently have tastings — I’ve discovered some great new wines through them.
Beware of going too close to closing on the weekends, as the store is small and cramped, and it can get a bit claustrophobic as everyone comes in for last minute purchases.

This liquor store looks like my library would look if I had one, minus the mid-​century modern illuminated globe table lamp.
What I mean is that tucked into every corner of this traipse-​able maze of shelves you’ll find a lovingly disorganized clutter of the classics, a complete mess of best seller bargains, and floor piles of rare unusuals that could change your world view.
As a plus, the ladies at the front desk are very chatty and don’t care if you forget to whisper.
But no more making out in the (champagne) stacks, ok?! Yes I saw you two. Twice. Sheesh. College Students.

Vinho verde — «green wine» to the Portuguese — but essentially sauvignon blanc for the Providence 99%.
As would befit a family-​owned liquor store in the heart of Portuguese Providence, Maderia stocks vinho verde, in addition to a reasonable selection of liquor and craft beers. At 6 – 8 dollars a bottle, this wine begs to be served frosty, but has won numerous converts, even among out-​of-​towners. Of note, the wine isn’t green, the bottles are.
Atmosphere is reasonable — with bottle displays everywhere compensating for a smallish layout. The TV above the register always plays Rachel Maddow or some other squawk box of the left wing. The proprietors will not turn it off or apologize for it. Pinkos.
Otherwise, prices are moderate, with a six-​pack of craft beers going for 9 – 10 bucks, reasonable for the East Side. Standard may have kegs (Madeira doesn’t) and a wider selection, but at Gano Street is the place to go for vinho verde.

Great selection of wine and craft beers, friendly staff, and very conveniently located to several BYOB restaurants. These are the main reason why I frequent Madeira. I can always find the perfect beer to compliment the style of food I am about to nosh on in the fabulous Fox Point and Wickenden neighborhoods. They are family run and very friendly and helpful.
They may be small but they have a very awesome craft beer selection including some of my favorite brands such as Dogfish head, Berkshire Brewing, and Long Trail. For those who aren’t fans of a good brew, but prefer wine instead will be happy to know that they frequently have tastings.
So, if you are in the area and need to pick up an adult beverage, I highly recommend you stop in to Madeira’s.

Green Wine! Green Wine!
If you haven’t tried green wine (vino verde), you haven’t lived. I actually ran into this place after trying to find a specific bottle of green wine and ran up to the counter and screamed «Green Wine!» to the little Portuguese lady. She simply pointed behind me and I grabbed bottle like it was Christmas.
Apparently, Vinho Verde Frenzy is an epidemic…

No frills, but a surprisingly large selection. The prices are comparable but seem just a bit higher than some other shops in the area. Oh well, for the convenience of how close this is, I’ll pay a little extra.

Amazing selection? — It’s a small place, so not really
Incredible prices? — good deals here and there, but not reeeally
Super-​organized? — well, there are distinct liquor/​beer/​wine areas, but no, not reeeeally
But who cares — I LOVE IT HERE. The experience of booze-​buying at Medeira just doesn’t fit the usual criteria. It’s just its own cool, quirky thing.
*I love the family factor — there are often two family members behind the counter, attentive but also hanging out, usually multi-​tasking other random things, always in a pleasant mood, sense of humor.
*They tape little reviews and ratings from magazines all over the wines, everywhere — it makes me smile.
*There –are– a bunch of Portuguese wines to explore. And for a little place, a lot of interesting beers. Best of all, they carry one of my current fave red wines called «The Show» (both a malbec and a cab blend) — I can’t find it ANYWHERE else.
*The vibe in here on a Friday night is fun, everyone excited for the weekend and stocking up on libations. Maybe you feel that energy because it *is* a small, cool place in a student neighborhood. Why question, though?, I just know I don’t get that sensation in the endless aisles of Gasbarros — so I keep coming.

When in grad school, i lived at 308 Williams, one door away. I could make a «packy» run in 3 mins flat. Amazing.
Random wine discounts, very reasonable prices on all beers and spirits. Great selection.
Family owned by the Madeira Family. They used to be across the street where the diner is now (havent tried it yet).
