Sage Inn and Lounge

One of the better spots we found on this trip to Ptown. We have, admittedly, been disappointed by much of the food in town so Sage was a welcome respite — the menu was a little more interesting, the cocktails were very well crafted and the atmosphere was upscale but still comfy. The Truffle fries were perfection and so were our sliders and salad. We appreciated the smaller, more thoughtful menu with good portion sizes, reasonable prices and good service, Sage was a nice find.

Perfect boutique hotel in the middle of everything! Very cool lobby and helpful staff. Very historical place with cute bar/​restaurant. Rooms are nice but small. Good mattress and pillows with clean sheets! Will return next year!

A P-​town gem. A spacious, soothing atmosphere with interesting cocktails and magnificent food. Sage is very different from the standard restaurant in this town; more upscale, but reasonably priced (especially for the quality). The service was excellent (thanks Nate). I really enjoyed the variety offered in the menu. Having several different «small plates» made our time there fun. I can’t say enough about the chef’s imaginative creations, all of which tasted fantastic! Every time I sampled a plate and thought it couldn’t get any better another plate arrived and thoroughly impressed me again. I hope Sage is around for the long run because we plan returning again and again!

We stayed at the Inn for a weekend in late March, so it was the off season. The rooms and common spaces are nice, though not fancy. The wifi, though free, was spotty at best. The first day it kept telling me the password was incorrect. When I finally got connected, it was too slow to bother using. The walls are paper thin and we had someone in the next room bang on the wall when we were talking at a normal volume at 9:00am, so…
The «continental breakfast» is a little generously named. Maybe it’s better in the summer, but in the off season it was hard boiled eggs, store bought bagels and muffins and yogurt with granola. It was kind of «meh.»
All the staff was great.
We had drinks and apps in the lounge and we were happy with the quality all around. It was a slow night so we got plenty of attention from the waitstaff and bartender.

We came here in the dead of winter (some time mid-​February) & found it to be a haven in the heart of Provincetown. There is a swanky little fireplace that is visible from all seating areas, and the area is small enough to feel intimate and inviting. What we ordered:
Lobster knuckle sliders
Lamb sliders
Beef sliders
Truffle fries
Side salad
An assortment of adult beverages
The meat sliders were cooked more or less to perfection– we had asked for medium rare and that’s exactly what we got. (I prefer rare for lamb, but my dining companion preferred medium, so I think that’s where the discrepancy lies.) The lobster was great! It was definitely composed of mostly meat and seasoning with a minimal amount of mayonnaise. The salad was composed of mixed greens, and they didn’t skimp on those.
But the fries… I love truffle fries, but if I’m going to pay more than $ 3 for sliced potatoes with cheese, they should be worth it, you know? These were plated in such a way that the fresh grated parmesan and any herbs just fell to the bottom of the cone shape, so the bite consists of potato, truffle oil and salt. Still good! But a bit more incorporation of the cheese into each bite would have really made this 5-​stars.
The drinks– they were excellent. The waiter didn’t know off-​hand what types of cognac they carried, but found out within a matter of minutes.
Also, the manager, Rick, is very personable. It’s nice to feel welcomed anywhere, but Rick is able to give this small town lounge a certain cordial panache.

I stopped in here with two friends after we had had a late lunch for a drink. We LOVED it! A host walked us back to the restaurant and was super friendly. The bartenders were just as friendly. The place was kind of dead because it was an awkward time. They made us some drinks based on ingredients we liked and we loved them! We ended up staying for three drinks, oops! We also had a flat bread which was delicious. The restrooms upstairs were squeaky clean! Everything about this place was great, top notch! 5 stars!

Sage is probably one of the most upscale lounges/​restaurants that Ptown has to offer. Such a wonderful place. It’s very clean & chic, and high quality service.
The gentleman who walked us in was raving about the herb garden they had, and how skilled the bartenders were. To put him to the test, I listed some liquors and flavors I liked, and the drink he created was AMAZING. Hands down the most delicious (6) cocktail (s) I have had to date. Seriously, that good.
We had just eaten dinner, so the only food we ordered was the Kale flatbread, which was delicious by the way.
If you’re looking for a quality meal with stellar service to match, definitely check out Sage!

Me and my husband spent our honeymoon here and it was a very enjoyable experience. Centrally located, it was a shot stroll to shops and restaurants. The inn was very well kept and the staff was very helpful. Look forward to returning during the summer!

After 10 days of making the rounds in Ptown, I had the most expensive drink at Sage. $ 19 for a Manhattan made with decent, but not high end bourbon. It didn’t even have a real cocktail cherry, but one you get on an ice cream sundae. My friend got a much higher end bourbon shot for less.
We also had one of the small plates which I know are always pricier because you get something gourmet. But it was overrated for the price.
It’s too bad. The place itself is nice, but there are other places I rather spend my money.

This is a review of the lodging…
Pros:
–very convenient location in the center of Ptown, but amazingly peaceful and quiet once inside
–excellent parking lot and convenient bike rack
–lovely herbs everywhere outside, nice outdoor public areas
–comfortable bed
–cute sink/​toilette
–nice towels and sheets
–soothing atmosphere, nicely appointed room
–most of the staff were super kind, friendly, and accommodating
–fun, original artwork in dining room
–breakfast included and Hubby liked it, but wait! (see below)
Cons:
–for eco-​friendliness, they don’t include bar soap in the rooms. This is wrong-​headed. The push-​button liquid soap dispensers in the shower are tacky. Get some nice soap. Fortunately I brought my own as I love nice soaps
–room had a pitched ceiling which meant we consistently bumped our heads and had to duck a lot – we were not told this beforehand
–no bathtub, but was not told this. I want to soak in a tub when I’m on vacation and especially if my room is $ 250 a night
–breakfast was merely passable. I understand that there is a cooking school attached to the Sage Inn and I don’t know why nothing was homemade. The bagels and muffins seemed no better than grocery-​store; the yogurt was not interesting or healthy; fruit not interesting. I think there’s room for improvement here
–disco music in the restaurant, no thanks – maybe during cocktail hour, but not for breakfast
–some of the staff were not very friendly or accommodating
SO – as you can see from my 4 stars, I do recommend Sage Inn. It’s peaceful and convenient. But if you do stay, you may want to ask if your room has standard-​height ceilings. Private bath did not mean bathtub and I’m not sure they have any or if it’s all showers. Breakfast included might work well for you… I wanted something healthier and more delicious.

What a fancy little place to get a drink and appetizer before dinner!!!
The staff was amazing super super friendly and accommodating! We could have stayed here all night except for the one big issue! They were hosting a large event and the kitchen had an extremely limited menu so we couldn’t even get a bite to eat.
But the drinks were good and love the staff so we will be back!

After reading all the great reviews of this place, we were pretty disappointed with the drinks, food and the overall experience at the restaurant.
We made the decision to go here based off of Unilocal reviews, as well as Chef Lucio Garnica’s Instagram profile (lgarnica1) where he displays many of his dishes. This however, was a bad idea as most of the dishes on his Instagram were not offered on the menu. So we had to choose dishes from a menu that was frankly not that interesting. And to make matters worse, half the dishes we ordered were great, but the other half were terrible. Here’s what we got:
Blood Orange «Frozen» Margarita — was actually not frozen ice, but rather crushed ice. That being said, the flavor was good.
Sage and Cucumber Cocktail — I normally don’t complain about too much alcohol, but this drink had way too much and was too overpowering. Couldn’t even taste the cucumber. Bad.
Byron Pinot Noir from Central Coast, California — I normally like Pinot’s from Central Valley/​Coast, CA, but this one was downright terrible. The waiter/​manager was raving about it, but frankly, he was wrong. I’m a Sommelier for fun, so I think I know wine fairly well. Pass.
Half Dozen Oysters in a Soy Foam — this was horrendous. Normally I wouldn’t ruin a good oyster, especially since we were in a place where they come out of the backyard, but thought we’d try it as the waiter recommended it. I had one oyster and almost sent it back. The smell was so bad that I couldn’t tell if it was because the oyster was spoiled or if that’s what the foam was supposed to smell like. Then I ate it cause I thought that’s how it was supposed to smell, but then couldn’t taste anything but a sweet and somewhat sour soy sauce. That’s pretty much all I tasted. It was bad, real bad. Pass.
Traditional Gazpacho with Prawns — the flavor of the soup was actually pretty good, however two things were a major annoyance. First, they give you three prawns, which is great, but the problem is, they left the tail shells on. So, we had to either bite the tail off and handle a wet soupy tail with our fingers, or, try to cut off the tails with our spoons. Well I chose the latter, and on the second prawn, as I was attempting to cut it with my spoon, the bowl tipped and most of my soup fell on the table. So, note to chef… either: a) remove the tails before you serve them in the soup, or b) use bowls with a larger base. But on second thought, just remove the tails before served as your customers shouldn’t have to work their food.
«Fried» Scallops — scallops were not actually fried, but rather seared, and were actually excellent. Probably the best thing on the menu. The flavors, textures, along with the polenta and egg yolk were excellent. If only all our dishes were this good. Great dish.
Beef Short Rib — another great dish, with excellent flavor and mushrooms were tasty. Not as great as the scallops, but pretty close. Another good dish to get.
So, as you can see, two dishes were excellent, one was ok and one completely sucked. And for cocktails/​wine, one was good and the other two were terrible. So, this place is hit or miss.
Ambiance was nice, irrespective of the «W Hotel-​type lobby music» they play in the restaurant. Cool artwork and modern seating, but it almost seemed like they were trying to hard, thus resulting a «hip» restaurant you’d find in the suburbs that’s trying to feel like it’s in the city. Wasn’t a deal killer, but lent to a more drinking feel than eating feel.
Service was fairly good at times and then fairly bad at times. Just like the dishes, hit or miss.
Lastly, and something that can be easily fixed. The menu doesn’t describe each dish very well and leaves out descriptive words that could give you a better idea of what it’s going to taste like. Many of the dishes we ordered, based off verbiage in the menu, turned out to taste completely different than what we expected. For example, the menu says «Blood Orange FROZEN Margarita», so to me, that means finely blended ice as you would get from a frozen machine, but when it arrived, it was just crushed ice… very different than what I wanted and was prepared for. Another example is the «FRIED Scallops». We ordered it cause we never had «fried» scallops before, but when the dish came, the scallops were SEARED, NOT FRIED. We weren’t disappointed as they were excellent, but still, caused some confusion and shows that the Menu Verbiage needs to be fixed.
Overall, this place is hit or miss, and at $ 126 for our crappy meal, I’d pass on it and send you to Canteen, albeit a different kind of restaurant (casual), but at least the food is excellent and you know what you’re getting.
But if you must go to Sage, then do so at your own risk. Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky and hit on all dishes, but gambling always favors the casino, so you’ll probably end up like I did — ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ on good vs bad drinks and dishes.

Centrally located right off the pier but set back from the street so the property is quiet, Sage Inn provided us with comfortable accommodations and a lovely stay. We booked the King Suite’ which was spacious, light, clean and renovated with period details. It did not feel like a sterile chain hotel room but more like a guest bedroom in your friend’s home. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The light continental breakfast in the morning was a nice amenity before launching into a food bonanza for the balance of the day. I recommend Sage Inn to anyone staying in Ptown.

Well first, they like coming off as a vegan friendly restaurant but don’t do much beyond just writing it on the sign & the menu. Nothing on the menu is exactly vegan as-​is. You have to ask for your meal to be prepared vegan friendly which involves asking your waitress, who has clearly never heard the word «vegan» before. She went and checked with the chef, who said they could do either the salad without dressing (yum!) or the gnocci without… anything. It might have just gotten lost in translation with the waitress, because the chef did end up doing the gnocci with kale. However, it’s not much of a confidence booster when you nix 95% of the menu and then most of the ingredients in the only hot entrée. So yes, they’re vegan friendly in the same respect that the Ground Round is vegan friendly if you can talk them into making plain pasta.
Second, I just don’t get this place. They don’t serve entrees, just crazy expensive small plates with tiny portions. Their clientele is everyone from 21 to 100 and doesn’t really look like it’s attracting much of anyone. It’s mainly just there to be a cocktail lounge for anyone randomly in the mood for a $ 18 piece of swordfish or $ 9 french fries while they drink. If you actually want to eat dinner just go somewhere else.

We were looking for a place to eat one night, walking up and down commercial st. in Ptown. We stopped and perused the sage menu when a guy walked by and said — «You need to eat there. It’s legit. I am from Boston and know food. They do amazing things.»
He continued, «plus it’s owned by two wonderful ladies, so it’s always good to support the «family».
My wife and I gave each other a look that said «how can you say no to that?»
We didn’t regret the decision one bit! In fact, we need to find that man and thank him for the recommendation.
The good:
The cocktails! They take pride in their handcrafted tasty flavors. We had two perfectly mixed, chilled Martinis.
The variety in the small plate selections– we had cauliflower with black pepper and hummus; seafood chowder, swordfish and a potato and caramelized onion flatbread. Really cooked and plated perfectly. All delectable!
The freshness of the dishes and ingredients! Tasty, savory, cooked with different complementary flavors but not greasy or overly filling where you can’t move.
The décor– nice and relaxing; loungey but not over the top. Very comfortable seating
Service– attentive and very nice.
Definitely a place to check out in Ptown. There are many options– this is one you’ll want to try!

Loved everything! I started with a signature cocktail. So many options and super creative! I ordered the house chips with jalapeño dip. They were great but a lot
for one person. The problem is they are tasty so you can’t stop eating them. I had the beef slider which was so mouthwatering, delicious, full of flavor. I wanted another but I needed to try more from the menu. I finished with the lavender crème brûlée. It was cooked perfectly but I didn’t love the flavor. It was very bland in my opinion but maybe I just prefer the vanilla bean more. I sat outside and loved the patio. It felt like I was back in California. My waitress was Gwen who was a sweet young woman who was energetic and greeted everyone with enthusiasm. It made you feel happy and excited to order. I suggest you go and enjoy this little hidden gem off the Commercial street chaos!

I love big chain hotels in some ways — you know you’re getting a decent room, standard service, etc. But I also love B&Bs — you get to feel like you’re really meeting people in the community, you meet other guests, etc. I felt like Sage Inn was really the best of both worlds.
Things I appreciated:
–Warm, genuinely friendly customer service. Dan (house manager?) was always around to chat and help people out with tips on where to eat or what to do.
–Nice, clean, well-​appointed rooms without «quirks» — I am not a fan of the victorian style of many B&Bs, so I loved how the room had simple decorating, white linens, and IKEA furniture
–Great wifi! Was able to stream stuff without an issue
–Good breakfast — granola, dried fruit, yogurt, milk, fresh fruit, mini muffins, coffee, and tea
–Fantastic hot water. Should be a staple of all hotel rooms, but… sometimes isn’t!
–Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers in the shower. Loved it!
–In-​house lounge! Great for when you don’t want to (or can’t) leave the hotel. They were happy to let me take things up to the room.
We stayed during a blizzard, so I can also add that the staff did a great job of communicating with guests about potential power outages, and that they were lovely about bringing out board games and hanging out when you pretty much couldn’t leave. They really were doing all that they could to make it a great experience for guests. Also: I came with a 6-​month kid, and they were great about answering my questions (no, they didn’t have a crib, but yes, the room would be big enough for a pack-​and-​play, and yes, they would be happy to move out an extra chair in advance to make sure).
Things I would recommend changing:
–The breakfast was quality, but for those of us who get bored easily, a little variation would be nice from day-​to-​day. Things like oatmeal, bagels, different fresh fruit, PB&J, etc would be relatively easy to rotate inn to periodically switch it up.
–It was a little tricky to see the rooms on the website — you could see pictures of some rooms, but it would be nice to know, «OK, here is what the select queen rooms look like,» as you’re booking.

Review for the lounge:
Sage was such anise thyme, I can’t wait to cumin again. I sat at the bar with my bf where we split the potato and caramelized onion flatbread and a flight of wines. Both were delicious and the bartender, Jason, was friendly and did a great job. The bread was flat and the wines flew – what more can you want?
