History

Established in 1981.

In 1981, Brant Deaton purchased the former Green’s Supply, a lumber yard and hardware store just south of Mexico, NY on Route 3. As the business grew, Brant recognized the need for a similar business in the village of Pulaski, NY. In 1983, he purchased the former G.L. Thomas & Sons Feed Mill in Pulaski and converted it into a small hardware store.

Deaton’s then became a member of the Ace Hardware buying co-op and was thus able to access the broadest assortment of hardware, plumbing, electrical, and paint supplies in the industry. In order to accommodate the resulting sales demand, the store was expanded several times into the former warehouse, until a move was necessary. Deaton’s then bought and renovated the former P&C grocery store at 3970 Port St., opening in October 2005. In 1993, Deaton’s had 3 employees in a 3,700 sq ft store; now Deaton’s employs over 30 local people in a store now exceeding 20,000 sq ft.

Meet the Business Owner

Brant D.

Business Owner

Originally from the foothills of the Appalachians in Breathitt County, Kentucky, Brant moved with his family to Southern Ohio as a teenager. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War, then attended Ohio University where he received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering. After Graduation, he began working for General Electric. While working for GE, Brant was moved around the country, spending time in Dayton, Brooklyn, San Diego, Baltimore, and finally Syracuse, all while raising four daughters and two sons. While at GE, Brant spent considerable time working on a contract with NASA on Project Gemini, the human spaceflight program. Brant decided to go into business for himself, and bought a hardware store and lumberyard in 1981 while continuing to work as an engineer. He grew the business until it could support him full time a short time later. He has since grown the business into a stable employer of local people, and a generous contributor to community causes.
