Abernethy and Spencer

wow, the rudest retail experience I have ever had. I just called to ask if they had organic garden soil in bulk, and the guy says «yes.» So I ask what is in it, and he said «just come and look at it.» To which I said, well can you tell me whats in it, and he said «frankly, that’s a really stupid question. Just come and look at it.» Now, trust me, as an organic gardener, it is not stupid to ask what a garden soil is made of! There are many types of mixes, some with peat moss, some with vermiculite, some are just compost, some include top soil, and so on. I will never, ever shop there and will actually dedicate a fair amount of time to make sure no one else does either.

An awesome selection of plants and the prices are the best I’ve found. Staff ranges from super, super nice to a bit gruff, but it’s gruffness in that «I’ve had a crazy busy day» manner, and I don’t take it personally at all. Parking can be a bit tight; not sure I’d dare it on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

I love this place. I run a small nursery of my own, but still find plenty of interesting things when I visit Abernathy. A must see for any gardener!

Fantastic plants and mulch but horribly rude staff.

Fantastic garden center and nursery! I was touring the area and ran into this place. I have never been to a nicer, more welcoming retailer. All of the employees were so nice, and knowledgable, and the prices were fantastic! I wish we had a nursery like this where we live, I’d visit every day!

Great experience. Place is really overwhelming to a novice gardener but everyone was friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable. Prices were very reasonable. Hoping for some gardening success this year!

My experiences with Abernathy and Spencer have all been more than positive. My daughter, son-​in-​law and grandchildren live in Purcellville and they introduced me to A and S because they were delighted with the job A and S did on landscaping their garden and patio. My husband and I live in Canada so we have frequently called Abernathy and Spencer to deliver trees and bushes to our Purcellville family on special occasions. Everything has been delivered on time, in great condition and has thrived. Several times the staff has cautioned us about selections we have chosen because they are not suitable for weather conditions in the 20 132 climate zone. We have heeded their advice and chosen alternate plants. As a long time hands on gardener myself I fully appreciate the necessity of properly planting new additions to the garden at the correct time of year, with good spacing, soil amendment and water. If one follows the rules for nurture, blossoming healthy plants are your reward. My children are dedicated gardeners also.
