Sine’s 5 & 10, where everyone is a kid again!

History

Established in 1912.

For 99 years, Sine’s 5 & 10 Cent Store has offered a unique shopping experience to the people of Quakertown and the surrounding communities.

Howard B. Sine began his business in 1912 at 217 W. Broad St. where the News Agency is now located. In 1926 Mr. Sine purchased the Kinch Bakery property at 236 – 238 W. Broad St. and opened a new store on December 4, 1926. The store was enlarged in 1932. A Grand Opening for the new addition included such bargains as: a pound of assorted chocolates, 10 qt. galvanized bucket and banana splits all for 10 cents and cotton rugs, 24″ x 36″, for 19 cents.

Mr. Sine died in 1945 followed by his wife in 1952. The business was left to their only daughter, Theresa Harr and her husband, Arthur. Their son, William, came into the business in 1956.

At the end of 1973, Tess and Arthur Harr retired and William and his wife, Marlene, became the new and present owners.

Meet the Business Owner

Bill H.

Business Owner

Bill joined the business in 1956 after a stint in the army. When his parents retired in 1973 his wife, Marlene, joined him in running the store. They expanded the 9,000 square ft. store by buying the building next door, adding another 3,000 square feet. Their children, Bill, Jr. and Linda both work in the store, to ensure the store sees it’s 100th anniversary in 2012. Grandkids Joel, Josh and Kelly have all done their part in preserving their heritage by helping out when needed.
