Man this place is getting slaughtered on Unilocal and I have no idea. I hope I’m writing about the right restaurant. Saw this little storefront that has chinese-style bbq kabobs and we ordered a couple lamb ones to try it out. It wasn’t phenomenal but it did pass muster. I thought it was just fine though it was a little bit too lean. Would’ve appreciated bit more lamb fat for flavor.

Why all the bad reviews? I’ve been here many times and each time I was all happy with my skewers and the food we ordered The service can be a bit spotty but we never had problems with the waiters. And they have the service button you can press right next to your table and they usually come in minutes My favorite skewers here will be the chicken, lamb and the shrimp screwers. And it’s fun to grill them you self and watch them rotate. And they give you this plate of seasoning that you dip ur skewers in. yum! We also tried their bbq fish and their fish in spicy oil. Both were very good. Overall a solid place. Will be back for sure

I haven’t been to this place in a long time, years actually. There are several reasons for this ~ service and quality issues. The last time I came here to order skewers, I went about my usual routine of greeting the guy inside and waiting for my order. However, he was a little busy, so I patiently waited for him to finish and take my order. I know he saw me, because he nodded at me in greeting when I bowed and said hello in Korean. While I was waiting, a few others came in behind me to order food. But instead of cooking my order, he started taking the others that came in after me and as it turned out, he completely disregarded my order all together. I only figured this out when he took another group that came in ten minutes later and my order still hadn’t been prepared. So, I left and never went back. Another reason not to go here anymore: the quality is inconsistent. If the older man wasn’t there, then I would just keep walking ~ I ordered from the younger guys before and it was not good. So, I don’t go there anymore. I go to the little outside stall next to bubble tea shop across the street. They’re fast, consistent, and I’ve never had any problems with them.

poor service. waiters made comments when water was not clean. takes forever for bill to come when asked 2 – 3 people but had one waiting to take our money. expensive for what you can get else where and probably taste better too.

THISREVIEWISFORROOSEVELTAVEBRANCHONLY. Typical Yanbien(Chinese Korean) skewers place like any other joints EXCEPT: 1. BADSERVICE — Beware of male waiter. He seems angered for no apprent reason and has ghetto demeanor. We asked for additional banchan(side dish) and we were told that they it will be charged with most unpleasant attitude ever. I was with my family and we were disgusted with such attitude. Who gives a rats about paying few extra bucks, but where is this anger coming out from? This guy is just plain unpleasant. Other waitresses were OK. 2. PRICE — $ 15 for 10 skinny lamb skewers? Half of these cheap lamb meats are are fat and unknown parts. You need to have at least 20~30 sticks to feel full. Meaning it will cost you $ 30 ~ $ 45 per person for mixes of class D boxed meat. My advice: Go to Yang Ji Chon 35 – 14 Farrington St. for better service at better price.

As an expat from Astoria, I’m still getting use to the things I can’t find elsewhere.(Cheap filling meal for 3 dollars that isn’t a hot dog/pizza? Hell yeah!) One of my new found loves from Flushing are those random skewer carts on the streets. My favorite is the guy on the corner of Kissena and Stanford. But it’s cart food, outdoor, perhaps they got foil to go if your lucky. When I found Feng Mao I thought it’ll be perfect, cook it yourself skewers, what can go wrong? A whole darn lot… Set up: For those who never been, you get seated in a booth, and after you order, they fill this rectangular pit in the middle of the table with charcoal. They pull a air funnel thingy from above the booth down to the pit to suck up the ashes as well as keep the coal nice and red. And you just set the skewers down of the slots meant for them and they rotate themselves. The Good: $ 1 a skewer depending on how much you order and what kind of meat. The beef and lamb were good and juicy. Done quickly. The chicken was tender, which is nice they got right. The auto-rotate feature was nice, since we can pay attention to conversation without charring one side. The spices aren’t too spicy for those that aren’t use to spicy. For those that want a burn, they got Sriracha for you. Vinager is also supplied. The asian take on lemon juice with shish kabob? Not too bad but I stuck to my spices. The Bad: This isn’t a $ 3 meal, or even a $ 10 meal. Especially if you order lamb and beef. The amount of meat given is fair but requires quite a few skewers to get full… Think 15 – 20, and I’m not one that is a big eater. This isn’t a bad thing per-say, we just didn’t realize how… hungry we would be even after eating. They gave us tea when we walked in. It was hot so we asked for cold water instead. They dumped the tea and gave us water in the same cup, so the water ended up tasting like over brewed watered down tea. Smokers. I know New York City banned smoking in restaurants and bars, and even parks. I didn’t expect this part either. Apparently people use that air sucking funnel thingy from the ceiling to get rid of the smoke. But smell is still there. I didn’t mind since I’m use to it, but heads up to those that are bothers. I counted 3 tables doing that when I was leaving. Not all the skewers auto rotate. For whatever reason our chicken order came on bamboo skewers. We couldn’t figure out why. We had to hold the skewers in place since they were heavier on one side they kept rolling back to the same place, and over cooking one side while another was basically raw. The chicken pieces were huge which was great, but annoying since it crowded the space in the little pit they gave us. In the end we were fed up and took all the chicken off the skewers and back onto the metal rotating ones from our earlier order. They rotated! But that took a good 20 – 30 minutes of time just to cook 11 skewers. We knew were were cooking while walking into this place. We expected that, we just didn’t expect… The Horrifying: Food Poisoning. Did I get your attention? The bf and one friend hugged the porcelain throne that night. I however was brought up on my mom’s cooking and her blatant disregard for food safety(anyone want to come over for dinner?) So I didn’t feel a thing. My other friend worked in buffet restaurants for a while, so we were both immune. So if you don’t have an iron stomach, please save yourself the pepto and go elsewhere. I rather go back to that cart guy… I have to look him up on Unilocal

Came here for the skewers: After my usual spot on main street closed down I was literally heart broken… I didn’t know what to do with myself. I mean, you can always get them at the street vendors I GUESS but its not the same! SOMETIMESYOUJUSTWANTTOSITDOWNANDENJOYYOURSHISHKEBOBS!!! & Actual«Skewers» at restaurants are definitely over priced. The price here was similar to my previous hot spot, but the skewers I feel were not as good(is it my imagination? Am I subconsciously making myself feel this way? WHOKNOWS) I would still go back though. The thing they use to dust on the skewers is oh so gooood… THEONECOOLTHINGABOUTTHISPLACE is that the skewers auto rotate! They have a mechanical thing that just goes back and forth cooking the meat evenly! SOCOOL&CONVENIENT! Beef & Lamb is the best in my opinion, so good & juicy mmm.

I’ve been meaning to try this skewer place that opened a few months back. Most of the signage was in Chinese and Korean. This place was intimidating. Why go here when you can go to Minzhongle(they speak English there)? I say, adventure! So the main thing you notice when you get seated is that no one speaks English. Your Mandarin or Korean better be decent, or bring someone along that speaks it. Me? Broken Mandarin with a lot of sign language. Once you get seated, you’ll notice a service call button that’s oh-so-familiar in Korean joints, and a really strange grill on the table with a rack. Apparently(as I found out along this foodie journey): — They fill the bottom of the grill with charcoal. — You are given raw skewers in which you pile them onto the grill on the bottom. — Once you’re done cooking it yourself, you place the skewers onto the top rack for cooling. — Spice is given to accent your skewers. Gently row. — They come by every once in a while to refill your charcoal. — The plates they give you? It’s for the salad. Put your empty skewers on the table. It’s cool. Now, the skewer review: 1. Beef kebab — probably the best tasting one. Hard to go wrong. 2. Squid — Don’t leave them on the grill too long, it gets dry fast. 3. Chicken Gizzard — another one where you can’t go wrong, unless you don’t like gizzards. 4. Short rib — no meat, mainly cartilage. 5. Pork skin — roast it long enough and it’ll taste like pork rinds. 6. Bull’s Penis — Slimy, chewy, sticks to your teeth. No flavor, pretty gross. Now I know why no one eats penis.
