Up Square

This is my first time writing a Unilocal review and also visiting the salon Up Square. This was the best haircut experience I’ve ever had since I got to the States over the past 4 years. I’m really glad to have discovered this gem in the corner of Flushing.
Gary cut my hear. He is meticulous and client-​centered. I showed him a hairstyle that I liked and he adapted it super nicely based on the shape of my face. Also, Gary took the time to explain to mean details how I’m supposed to take care of my hair to prevent hair loss. Not only does he has great haircut skills, but he also has professional knowledge regarding the biological interactions between our hair follicles and hair washing habits/​techniques, causes of hair loss and ways to slow it down. Highly recommended!

I’ve been here a few times and they always do a great job at dying my hair. When I didn’t know what color to choose, Gary recommended a color that I’ve never tried before and it turned out amazing. I will be coming back in 2 months to try a different color!

My styles was Kevin & David helped him out, I must say I am so satisfied with there service i get compliments from friends to strangers. I love it!!! So glad I choose this salon for my new birthday look.

I always ask for King. He did a great job and now my husband and my daughter become his customer too…

Came to Up squared based on the Unilocal reviews. The salon was very clean. King was awesome! He did a great job on my hair compare to the other filthy salons.

Allen is excellent and very patient. He is good at both men and women’s haircut. The place is very clean and comfortable.

I went to Up Square to have my hair straightened using one or their newest services — Goldwell Kera-​Seal Keratin treatment. My hair is fairly damaged from all the coloring I’ve been doing. The process is really fast, compared to the Japanese straightening technique. In addition, there’s no harsh chemicals or funky smell. Gary, the boss did my hair and it came out silky. I’m so pleased with my results .
Overall, the place is pretty spacious, comfortable and relaxing. I also like the fact that it’s not in the epicenter of Flushing where all the hoopla is at. It’s on a pretty quiet street but once you’ll find it, it’s worth it to come here.

A very good experience, i lv the style so much. n will come back again. The shop was cool, comfortable.

Great experience with Upsquare and very happy with Alan’s work of art. I have been looking for Alan for the past 8 years and never did he disappointment me before. I usually just let him decide on what to do and how to style my hair. He has a great fashion sense and knows exactly what fits me. From haircut to coloring to perming, I trust Alan 110%. So if your looking for an experience and trusted person I highly recommend Alan! I’m also happy about how patient he is and doesn’t rush. I will not let anyone else touch my hair except for Alan!

Terrible experience today! My hairstylist did not understand Chinese nor English. Apparently, he thought I should follow the modern fashion when Ii specifically told him what I wanted. Would not return here again. Wouldn’t recommend it.

I come to here over 6 years, I only let one person touch my hair, he is Alan. He knows how to cut my hair so well, every time I don’t need talk to him that much, he always know it what I want, even sometime I wanna try something new to my hair, if it wont look good on me, he will say it right away, and I listen to him, bcz I know he is always right about hair. Also I have so damn long hair, of course when he cut my hair, I have to stand up to let him to cut my hair nicely, otherwise he have to lay down on the floor to cut my hair? Really?Hell no… I wanna my hair looks nice I definitely follow him wut I need to do when he cut my hair. And every time he always make me happy and make me love my hair more and more. ALWAYS PPL COMPLEMENT ON MY BEAUTIFUL LONG HAIR ON THE STREET BY SOME STRANGERS, that make me feel really good.
I think their price is not bad at all, look at their new place, I think it’s so damn cool, if u compare here to another Chinese hair salons in Flushing, I think u are totally crazy, IT IS NOT comparable OK? Even compare here to China town hair salons, I still think China town actually is more pricey, Manhattan is the way too expensive, and some places are not even that good… well, I love here, I’m a big fan here, the ppl work here they are all pretty nice, wait… I think they do have one or two very cool workers there too, anyway I love my hair so I definitely come here :)
Tip:Alan dose men’s hair pretty good too, that’s wut I saw when I was there getting my hair treatment !!!

Newly renovated, clean and comfy environment, people was friendly here.
Stylist understand every detail of what I’m looking for and did a great job of it, I was very satisfied. The time is a bit of a thing but i think it worth every minute and every penny i spent. Will defiantly come back again and bring my friends in for this great experience.

I had a bad experience here today. Alan cut my hair and I felt insulted. He was complaining that my hair was too frizzy. He asked his assistant to blow dry it straight so that he can go out to have a cigarette. Usually it’s the hair dresser’s job to blow dry it straight. He even told me to stand up for him to cut the back of my hair because he said it was too long and his back was hurting. In addition, my hair did not turn out the way I asked for. I find him inexperienced, unprofessional and rude.
It’s very overpriced as well. It’s $ 28 with 20% off because it’s their grand opening. Not worth my time. Now, I have to go to another salon to get my hair cut again.

Because of Hurricane Sandy, I couldn’t get into the city to see my usual barber. I decided to come in here hoping to get an adequate cut for an upcoming wedding.
I really should’ve check the reviews beforehand.
I made the mistake of not ensuring a stylist that can speak English whom I can explain what I want (which really was just to simply trim the sides and shorten the top). My Stylist, Jacky, said he understood enough but I explained to them in broken Cantonese anyway. In the end he really didn’t understand what I want because I didn’t get my hair cut the way I wanted it to.
Worst part is that he RUSHED me as soon as his friends came in. Apparently he wanted to show them a part of the salon that was newly renovated? I told him as he was about to apply gel that I want him to trim the front a bit more but he tells me it won’t look good and adds the gel anyway. What the fuck? He also barely touched the back, something I didn’t noticed until I got home because he didn’t bother to show me with a mirror.
Hopefully, the subways will work Friday morning so I can reschedule with my usual barber so he can fix this mess on my head.
Do not come here. I paid 24 bucks for a sloppy cut. I could’ve gone to a $ 6 chop shop and gotten a better cut.

I was first a bit worried cuz I only seen 9 reviews on here, 8 of them are good, and 1 one just about to blow this place up
First of all, the location is good, but the front door is a bit hard to find, because is located on Roosevelt Ave by the bus stop, so they’re many people there lining up, is very easy to walk pass without knowing it since this salon is on the 2^nd floor, you able to see the sign, you just can’t find the entrance
I walked in, the reception was on the phone, seem like she was chatting instead of actually working.
I giving her the sign (hair cut), instead of telling her friend to wait because she have a customers, she give me the hand (sit down)
She was on the phone at least 20 more minutes, I waited about 10 minutes, one guy came up and told me we should wash the hair first.
We went back there and I told him I would like to do color as well, so we moved to the chair, looking at the color I wanted, went back and do a quick wash
The salon is so… hot, and I over heard one of the styles telling his client
their air don’t get cold when is too hot outside. I’m thinking huh? Uh. isn’t it suppose to be the other way around? I don’t need it to be cold when is cooler outside
So I’m sitting there with the color in my hair and the plastic warp up my hair, sweating like a pig
While I was sitting there, I saw a plug in flat iron on the floor and a styles sweeping the floor really hard, so the hair and the dust are every where
Now to my hair cut, is just not what I expect it, I think he screwed up my sides too, damnit
It took him about 30 – 40 minutes for my hair-​cut, at the end, I was so getting ready to leave because is just too hot there and I’m getting too boring sitting there
I won’t be back, my styles is friendly, nice guy, but this is just not the place for me, sorry guys

I’ve been going to this salon for the past 5 years for my Japanese Straight Perm and last year, I decided to venture out to see what else is out there and if it would be better and cheaper. What a mistake. Lesson learned. Be prepared to be pampered to the max at Up Square. The service was great. The whole thing took about 4 hours total from start to finish and the person who took the time out to apply the keratin and straighten my hair, which took about 3 hours, constantly asked me if I was comfortable and even brought me water to drink. He was meticulous and thorough and took the time to make sure that each strand is taken care of.
I don’t know why everyone talks so highly of Edmond. I had him once and he did a terrible job cutting my hair. He didn’t listen to what I wanted and seemed to hurry me out the door. Thumbs down for Edmond, but my stylist, Alan, was very good. He was attentive, detailed, and listened to what you wanted and took the time to get it right.
If you want a real Japanese Straight Perm that is worth the money, come here. Although I paid a hefty $ 200+tip, it is worth it for me as it lasts me a whole year. The chemicals that they use are high-​end quality and they do not skimp out on that. Only wished they had a better ventilation system so you don’t inhale all that chemicals in.
I give it 2 thumbs up!

I LOVE Pauline!!! She saved my face after my horrible experience at Jing’s Beauty. She does very good extractions, which is the most I care about when it comes to facial, but boy can she also massage! That is a bonus to me :)
Pauline is experienced and professional. She makes sure my face is cleaned before letting me go. She would use different machines according to my need for the best solution, and my face would just glow for days and days until the next appointment! A very down to earth and straightforward person. Would be very honest with your skin problems, and won’t push you to buy what you don’t need.
I am sad that I’m no longer in New York, because it’s hard to find an esthetician as good as Pauline. If I ever visit or live in NY again, this would be my place to go for sure.
On a side note, I’ve also gotten haircut at Up Square 2. I would only give 1 star to that, and I don’t even care to remember my stylist’s name because he ruined my hair!
