Paugh’s Orchard

I just read a review from 2012 where the reviewer mentioned he didn’t pick apples due to the strong smell. LOL. It’s a freakin farm. Get real. Six of us stopped here this last weekend and we picked quite a few apples, even though there was a strong odor present. The farm store was well stocked and the wife and I purchased a number of things to include Apple Jelly which was very good.

Great Apple Cider sold here! Also picked up a bottle of a tasty Peach/​Vidalia Onion Hot Sauce.
Did not pick up any Apples during this visit. The area was pretty stinky the day I visited — a strong, fresh smell of manure permeated the air as soon as one stepped out of one’s vehicle!

I can’t understand the lack of 5 stars in the other reviews. Friendly, friendly people, beautiful scenery, and the best apples and peaches in the area. I highly recommend Paugh’s Orchard!

Discovered this place by accident after insisting to fiancé that we do a pretty day trip up route 42 rather than efficient one up 81. Tons of different apple varieties available, in picturesque scenery, with wonderfully warm and friendly company in the form of Mr. Paugh and his wife. You’re welcome to try any apple you want, as well as the delicious cider the Paughs make on-​site.
Since this is a small farm, there’s a definite specialty: apples now, and I imagine different crops at different times of year. Prices on apples were low (we got 8 for $ 2), but as with any farmer’s market-​type operation, they were a little higher than average on prepared foods like apple butter and preserves. Can’t begrudge them that, though! Highly recommended.

Damn good apples purchased from the man who grew the little red bastards. Great selection of apples at low prices grown in the orchard behind the farm house. In addition to apples there is salad dressing, apple cider (duh!), salsa and several fruit butters (pumpking, pear, etc.) for sale inside.
The place must have a good reputation since there were several locals buying apples while we were there late on a Saturday. VERY kid friendly and well worth the drive.
Tip: Ask about the «hard cider» and make the owners day.

Mr. Paugh lives at this location and opened his orchard and store about seven years ago or so just outside his home.
He sells apples in the fall, strawberries starting the third week of June, and blackberries and peaches starting in August. He’s closed for winter, of course.
This is a great place in which to pick your own apples or berries. He also has other things for sale (see Amenoush A.‘s review), and they are priced normally.
Great place for an outing for a couple of hours.

Cute, small orchard close to Route 81 in Virginia. They were selling about ten different varieties of apples out front. It was $ 18/​bushel in fall 2010. For those who may not know what a bushel is, it’s about 50 normal-​sized apples. You can also buy smaller amounts.
They also sold cider, apple butter, peach butter, honey, many types of fruit spreads, and many types of salad dressings, all made by their orchard. The bottled products are not the cheapest things in the world, but they’re fresh and haven’t traveled very far from the source, obviously, so that’s a plus.
Nice friendly guy running the place, was pretty talkative and answered all our questions. He said that some apples are grown on the orchard, and others are purchased from other farmers in the area. It was a family-​friendly place, and apparently area schools make field trips to this orchard. The drive there is very scenic in the fall. The only annoyance was that the whole area smelled pretty strongly of manure as a function of it being a farm. Also the only bathroom was a port-​a-​potty. Not sure how they do that for school groups, but ok.
Different types of apples get picked at different times of the fall. I think their season spans from August to November. So if you have a particular apple in mind, it might be a good idea to call and ask when you should go over. Cool place to stop if you are in the area.
