Rex B Card, DDS

I have been going to Dr. Card since I moved to Raleigh 15 years ago. A friend of mine recommended this practice to me and I can say that I am very happy with their care. Dr. Card and staff are very professional and are great at educating me on every aspect of my visit.

I recently visited the office of Dr. Rex Card. This was my first visit as a new patient and will most definitely be my last. My teeth were cleaned by a very pleasant hygienist. She pointed out several issues in my mouth that she said she would make the doctor aware of.
After the cleaning I met Dr. Card. He was pleasant and proceed to examine my teeth. During the examination the hygienist was telling him what she saw and he proceeded to look based on her recommendations. No X-​rays were taken. I wonder who is running this show. Sounds like the cart is pushing the horse rather than the horse pulling the cart.
After the exam was concluded, Dr. Card informed me that I was on the verge of developing a toothache and needing a root canal. He recommended drilling and filling at least three teeth. I listened to his advice and thanked him after which he promptly left the room. I am not the type of patient that believes doctors walk on water. Just because someone tells you something, does not necessarily make it so.
My gut feeling was that Dr. Card is drill happy. Granted, my mouth could stand to have some work done if I choose to do it, however, I have no issues that require immediate treatment. I follow a strict oral home health program and see the dentist four times each year for cleanings and check ups. It seems rather unlikely that within three months, my mouth should deteriorate so badly that a root canal would be called for.
I left his office not even clear on exactly what it was that he intended to do. This did not sit well with me, and so I immediately sought a second opinion just in case a potential problem existed. I saw a dentist who is a dental professor at UNC Chapel Hill. He took X-​rays and examined my mouth. He thoroughly explained my situation and gave me a mirror so that I could see for myself what he was talking about. With regular exams and routine cleanings combined with good home heath care, my mouth can be maintained like this for years without any unnecessary drilling and filling or root canals.
My advice to anyone reading this review is this: AVOID THIS OFFICE like the plague! P. S. I cannot speak about any physical pain, however, Dr. Card can certainly inflict serious pain on your wallet, however…
I think that what bothers me more than anything else about this dentist is the fact that other potential patients who are less educated than I regarding the state of their oral health will be easily swayed into believing that they require a great deal of potentially unnecessary dental work. I know my mouth very well, and I take excellent care of my oral hygiene. It greatly angers me when I come across someone who thinks that patients are ignorant and can easily be manipulated. To me this is dishonest, unethical and unprofessional behavior. I also hope that by being so brutally frank in my review, I will save someone else the pain, suffering and financial hardship of excessive and potentially unnecessary dental work. In closing I will say that like anything else «Buyer Beware.» Not all dentists are created equal.
