Triangle Strings

We have rented from Triangle Strings, taken childrens’ group lessons there, and bought a violin from them. Also had some quick repairs made. The staff have consistently been so courteous and professional. When my child was first considering playing violin around 7 years ago, they recommended an excellent teacher who we have loved. We’ve had group lessons with Dana P. who, besides being an excellent violinist, is great with kids … her energy-​level, patience, and good humor are amazing. When my 12 year old decided to trade in her rental violin towards the purchase of her own violin, we received a great trade-​in value, but most importantly, they treated her as though she was every bit as important as anyone who would walk into their shop. They laid out violins and bows beautifully in a sound-​proof room for her to play and experiment with. Even though we all knew we would not be buying one of the very expensive violins, they allowed her to play one of those as well when we asked just for a sound comparison. The staff were super informative about the cases as well and glad to take the time to answer every question. I couldn’t be more pleased with Triangle Strings.

Having decided to start playing again after 5 years, I took my violin here to make sure all was in good shape. They accommodated me without an appointment and did some minor tuning and string fixes free of charge. I was extremely impressed by their kindness and will be returning should I have any other needs. And if youre considering taking lessons, give them a call because many instructors hold lessons there. Thank you triangle strings!

Jerry Pasewicz, proprietor of Triangle Strings, is a superb restorer of fine string instruments and bows. His work is recognized internationally and he supervises an excellent staff. He trained with the legendary Rene Morel and with David Burgess, one of the most recognized American luthiers. Jerry has worked on my instruments and bows for more than 20 years (beginning before his move from NY to NC). I have complete faith in his integrity and the quality of his work.
Jerry is also a fine bow maker, although he does not produce many bows these days. He offers excellent bow rehairing either at the shop or through the netrehair web-​based service (shipping in well-​designed tubes via FedExp).
Jerry’s shop also sells and rents instruments and bows from entry level to master works of top luthiers. A notable feature is that rental instruments are set up properly, which makes a big difference for young players.
Altogether, an outstanding violin shop!

Called for advice/​suggestions on how to ship a cello cross-​country. Despite not going in for service, i.e., I wasn’t a paying customer for this specific transaction, Michele provided me a ton of useful information about how to pack a cello, names of shipping companies, which insurance carriers they recommend, and even offered to provide a cello box and packing materials for me!
I’ve also gone in to get my cello bow re-​haired multiple times, and they were awesome.

After having moved from Fayetteville to Raleigh, and also having not played my violin in about 5 years, I figured it was time to dust off my baby and have her cleaned!
I decided (by ratings/​reviews) to try Triangle Strings, and was pleasantly surprised! They have such a friendly staff, and they know exactly what they’re talking about (which was a huge pet peeve of mine — aka employees that knew nothing of music or any stringed instrument). I dropped off my violin for a clean/​maintenance and picked up that following Saturday! Super quick service, and for the price, very good work!
FYI: If you are interested in playing the violin and making it a hobby, be warned: it is an EXPENSIVE hobby! Take it from a player of 10+ years!

I use Triangle Strings’ Netrehair online service, and find it to be one of the greatest services there is for a string player. Scheduling the rehair is easy, the tube they provide is top-​notch; I never have a fear about shipping even my most valuable bows in it for the rehair. And of course Jerry’s work on the bow is superb, and most importantly, consistent. I cannot recommend this shop more!

Our experience at Triangle Strings has always been professional and top-​notch. When our four year old daughter started violin lessons this past summer, we stopped in at the store and they measured her expertly and kindly. In our hunt for the right teacher for her, we had tried contacting various teachers in the area and even met a couple but none seemed like the right fit. We finally called Triangle Strings and they promptly emailed us a list. From that list, we found a wonderful teacher whom our daughter personally chose and adores. We are renting a violin, with that money going towards purchase down the road. We’ve stopped in for new chin rests, and they’ve simply loaned us a few to try with the teacher. If you’re looking for a violin shop that is professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating, definitely utilize Triangle Strings.

I previously reviewed John Montgomery Violins and explained why I’m not a fan of his shop.
This past summer, when I went to purchase a bow and they had very limited options and felt I was treated very poorly (I was forced to try the bows out in the front portion of the shop while customers came and went because the one practice room was in use — this was despite having an appointment). Needless to say, it was not an atmosphere conducive to picking out the right bow for myself and my violin.
Finally, after enough humiliation, I walked out and went over to Triangle Strings. I had never been in the shop before but was instantly greeted by the front office woman who was very friendly and very knowledgeable. I explained to her what I was looking for and she took me back to one of several private practice rooms.
Later she came in with a tray of 12 bows that were all within my price range and specifications. I got the sense that that was just the tip of the iceberg. She left me alone to saw away on my violin and it was great to just be able to try out the bows without being in a fishbowl and with the distractions of self-​impressed passers by who were just window shopping (I’m talking to YOU — mr. violin hotshot from CHP who decided to come in and show off).
It took me quite a bit of time to go through each of the 12 bows and I was never rushed or interrupted. When I finally narrowed it down to 2, the wonderful woman offered to let me take both home on trial — no credit card needed and nothing but my signature and a promise to be back the following week.
When I returned, I had a better idea of what I was looking for and she brought in another dozen bows to try out. Again, I narrowed it down to 2 and they let me bring both home on trial.
They also had an excellent selection of violin cases, rosin and other accessories and I wound up purchasing a great case for my violin and new bow. Overall, I felt the prices were very reasonable — especially compared to Montgomery.
I met Mr. Pasewicz and had him assess my «spare» violin which wasn’t high-​end or special and he did some work on it to make it sound nearly as good as my 100-​year-​old violin. EVERYONE that I dealt with from the shop was friendly, professional and knowledgeable and all of them respected who you were and your level of playing without setting you up for an inferiority complex.
I recently started taking violin lessons again and my teacher said that Mr. Pasewicz is THE go-​to guy for bows but he still prefers Montgomery for violins. At this point, unless there is truly something that I’m sure would require a top-​tier luthier, I will be taking all my instruments to Triangle Strings. If it isn’t something I think Mr. Pasewicz can handle, I will go back to Chicago and have the work done there. However, short of snapping off the fingerboard or needing to have the violin rebuilt, I don’t know what that would be!
The ONLY downside I encountered was the ease of access for Triangle Strings — you have to go up and down a steep narrow outdoor staircase and which is bad enough when you are carrying a relatively compact violin. It is NOT for the faint of heart — especially if you are even the slightest bit afraid of heights!
I’m NOT looking forward to hauling my cello in there!
As an aside for parents, on my second visit to the shop, I saw several parents with younger kids in there and they were just as courteous and helpful with the kids as they were with me. Again, they were able to provide parents with the guidance and selection necessary in order to make sure that younger kids had the right instrument that would keep them motivated and allow them to build a solid foundation. I never saw any kids in the several times I visited Montgomery’s shop but suspect that younger kids would not necessarily be welcomed with open arms.
