The Hotel Alex Johnson

The hotel is obviously older but the rooms have been updated. We enjoyed the soft beds. The room was really small (715). The hair dryer stopped working in the middle of me using it. I know I’ve heard that the hotel is haunted but maybe it just needs to be replaced? I did however take some pics of my kid in the lobby that can’t be explained. A green dot appears around my daughter. It appears in photos with and without flash. Could be paranormal?

This stay started off amazing. We were put in a brand new room and the hotel is dog friendly (for a $ 25 fee.) The room had no blinds but was the only one with a refrigerator which we needed for dog food and drinks. The room was IMMACULATE; very clean. (Housekeeping card indicated it was Bobby Jo.) We were originally told that the roof patio restaurant was dog friendly but upon arrival were told this was erroneous. We returned to our room to order room service. The hotel management sent up an apology of dog treats and a Starbucks certificate for the misunderstanding. This was very nice but when we went to open the door it was stuck. Apparently some part of the latch malfunctioned and it could not be opened from either the inside or outside. Maintenance was promptly called and tore off the trim and opened the door in about ten minutes. Response time to the emergency was timely. We then ordered room service. The menu in the room was not what was actually available. The food came without salt & pepper, condiments or a knife capable of cutting through a steak. My husband’s meal came with the incorrect side. When we asked they promptly brought up the correct side and a steak knife. Overall the stay was okay. The hotel is great looking but the standard of service does not seem to be at the same level yet (except housekeeping, it was exceptional.) When we left I fully expected an apology from a manager for being literally trapped inside our room. Nope.

If there was an option for negative stars I would select that.
Had to move rooms three times. I told them I would be working nights for my job so they tried to put me on a floor with no window curtains, I refused that room. So then they put me in a room right above construction. Try sleeping through that.
Only plus about this hotel my housekeeper was truly amazing. I did not catch her name.

My friends and I stayed here on our last night in beautiful South Dakota. There is a pretty awesome graffiti art alley around the corner. The hotel has a fascinating, ghostly history that the valet manager, Savoy, was kind enough to take the time out of his busy day and share with us. Savoy’s ghost tour was the highlight of Rapid City.

I’m a frequent traveler and a Hilton Diamond member. My experience with the Alex Johnson was flawless. Apparently the renovation was complete in our room. While it is a vintage floor plan in keeping with the historic building, it had all the amenities and new décor you would expect in this price range. Definitely worthy of the Hilton brand.

Loved staying here! Saw it on the Hilton site as part of their Curio Collection. It was a great hotel. Top notch service, pet friendly, good food/​bar. Great location.

Awesome find in the heart of Rapid City. Super low rates and boutique feel.
Rooftop bar was wonderful. Weather was perfect and the bar made for a perfect evening.

Absolute best Hotel staff I have EVER seen. I would go change all my other hotel reviews simply because this one is the best. If you have an event, I would highly recommend holding it here.
Renee is the Banquet Manager, and should give trainings to hotels around the country on how she runs the show. We didn’t have to lift a finger. There was excellent communication prior to our event, we showed up and our ballroom was set up perfectly.
Our coffee was constantly refreshed, the room was well maintained, and the staff was happy and friendly (which can feel like a rare scene)
Each morning when we came in, Renee had little snacks set out for our staff and she even got us each of our favorite drinks at the store the night before, it was AMAZING, and well received after a stressful event.
The hotel was clean, inviting, and entertaining. LOVED IT

I was really happy to see this hotel added to the hilton group but it needs some hilton help. The location is great. Loved the downtown area and amazing president statues. The beds were creaky when you sat down or turned over. The shower head way to low and the large glazed bathroom tiles on the floor made it very slippery. Free parking is a block away.
I would stay there again hoping that Hilton was able to make some upgrades.

Great location in a great spot. If you are coming to rapid city this is the hotel you want*.
*Attn: Hhonor status people! Hotel just turned into a hilton curio property last week, 08÷18÷15, but is still a ways from meeting hilton standards. I bet in 6 months this will be amazing but until then it’s just pretty dated. It was ok cause I was expecting it. Had I not known that this was a new hilton due for a major reno I’d probably be majorly disappointed.
Hh diamond and gold members be advised that there is no free breakfast option on site yet. The hotel offers a brown bag breakfast. The restaurant silver spoon across the street is amazing but it’s on your own dime.
My advice is call ahead and see what the status of the hilton conversion is and plan accordingly.

As a luxury hotel this place is a far way to go elevators a small no on-​site parking charge extra for valet front desk friend is friendly but not necessary knowledgeable about everything that should be food there OK rooms not bad but again for lecture hotel definitely not up-​to-​date bathrooms not even close to being up-​to-​date beds are comfortablethey do offer valet service but again they charge forward but the valet people really nice check your billing

If you are looking for a great place to be centrally located to downtown rapid city this place is awesome. If you are looking for a quiet night I would keep looking. There are two bars and thin walls here. However, you can almost everywhere and the best restaurant in town is across the street. Plus walking into this place it’s very unique and worth a look!

I just love these nostalgic hotels. It’s like the walls can talk. I can only imagine what this place looked like in its heyday ! The roof top fire pits drew us from a few blocks down. They served a creamy grapefruit micro brew that is out of this world. Room was clean and quite nice. Quiet too. Great place to stay while visiting the bad lands and Mt Rushmore.

This place is so dirty! The blinds on the windows are covered in dust and the carpets have seen better days. Went to lay down and I can see every guests before me body sweat and drool marks through the pillow cases; not to mention random stains on the rest of the bedding. Absolutely disgusting. If it wasn’t midnight I wouldn’t be sitting here waiting for them to change the sheets.
*They also gave us a room that was already occupied… So you can imagine the reaction we got walking into a room with a startled guest jumping out of their bed!

The ambiance is good because of the history behind the hotel. The atmosphere is interesting. The staff are very friendly. It is awesome to be down town. There is a lot to do in Rapid City. Shopping and stores are great to wander around. The lobby is fun to sit in.
They have none of their own food restaurants which would be better for us. It would be great if they had some kind of breakfast to offer like the chains. It is frustrating to go find breakfast every morning. Our room doesn’t have a fridge so we can’t really have anything for the room. No pool. Its been hot and that would have been nice also after the hot days.
It is very convenient location which is why this is a 4.

It’s an older Hotel that’s located in the heart of Rapid City. Starbucks, an Irish pub, and a rooftop bar are all in the hotel. I gave it 3 stars because the room is as average gets and the bathroom is doesn’t have a fan so if you do the number 2, the whole room will smell lol. For the price you pay though, I wish they would of offered complimentary breakfast like every other place that charges this much.
This is one those places where if you were in a good mood, you would be thinking, «this is not bad, I’ve been in worst.» BUT if you weren’t in the best of moods, you can easily find things to dislike such as the cramped elevator and horror movie themed bathroom.
The staff were friendly and room service cleaned the room nicely BUT I think I will stick to the hotel chains… at least you know exactly what to expect on a consistent basis.

2 stars instead of 1 because I’ve stayed in worse, but then again the worse ones were way cheaper than $ 240/​night.
This place hasn’t been well-​maintained over the years and those updates that have been done have been pretty shoddy where it matters most, like the bathroom. It’s bizarre. The bathroom’s updates look like a weekend warrior DIY job and come nowhere near the standard that would warrant the price tag. Also the housekeeping staff is obviously not paid enough — the tub and the sink are grimy, there was a hair and filth in the tub, and the paint is flaking off on the walls. The tub is yellowing. It’s gross.
Pissed we paid so much for such conditions but this was the only hotel downtown that had rooms available. Big surprise.

While driving across South Dakota, we got stranded in a surprise snowstorm and chose this hotel to spend Mother’s Day night.
Mom and I loved the charming historical feel and the friendly service. Our beds were very comfortable, the room had a microwave and mini fridge, and the downstairs pub had delicious Thai chicken wings. We used our coupon for buy 1/​get 1 free drinks and discounts which we loved compliments of the hotel.
The décor is charming, a Starbucks adjacent through the lobby, big fire place, and delicious chocolates for sale in the lobby.
I’m rating it only 4 stars because of construction in the hallways that exposed all the sprinkler systems in an ugly way, an old hat I found in my room stuffed in the cracks next to the bed, a small bunch of hair found on top of my bedspread from the wash, a shower that had a broken handle and hard to find hot water, and dinner at the Vertex was tasty but he poor girl serving was stretched thin thanks to being the only server on duty thanks to the snowstorm.
Overall we liked it though. It was charming and after box hotels it was a fun evening of unique atmosphere. I loved all the charming stuff in the gift shop– a Native American Art lovers paradise.
We forgave it’s shortcomings and decided personality was worth it.

I’ll give it 4 stars!
Free shuttle from the airport, what a value! Awesome bar downstairs and upstairs on the roof.
The room was nice and more modern than the hotel looked.
The staff was nice and I had a very nice stay. Great location right in downtown Rapid City.
I was only there for one night, so I’ll leave it at that.
The rooftop bar was very classy and provided great views. Great place to take a date or to hang with friends or grab a drink or a bite to eat or anything!

The Hotel Alex Johnson is a very pleasant, unique place to stay in downtown Rapid City. My companion was feeling poorly when we arrived prior to posted check in time, however the staff took pity and got us into our room early.
The room itself was quite nice. The bathroom was clean and had been recently remodeled. The bed was comfortable, there were plenty of outlets and the room was overall in very good condition.
As is typical with historic hotels, the elevators are small and slow moving. Valet parking is available for those with automobiles. We arrived in a large truck and had to park several blocks away. The daily rate is a bit high in light of the overall value proposition, but I would stay here again on my next visit to Rapid.

Ein Haus, schon heftig in die Jahre gekommen, gelegen an der Ecke Main Street Six Street. In Hinterhof eine Galerie von Häusern und das mit Galerie meine ich wörtlich, alle Gebäude sind bemalt, besprayt. Das Innere des Hause ist uralt und dunkel, hat aber einen gewissen Charakter. Eine große Eingangshalle, geschmückt mit ausgestopften Tieren, alten Balken und Gemälden. Die Zimmer soweit in Ordnung, allerdings könnten die Bäder mal eine Runderneuerung vertragen. Unter unserem Fenster ein Riesenventilator, der die ganze Nacht brauste und sauste und die Fenster waren auch nicht ganz dicht. Allerdings gab es hier einen vernünftigen Frühstücksraum mit einem sehr guten Frühstück. Am Abend erhielten wir eine Führung durch das Haus und ein junger Indianer mächte uns mit einigen Tänzen vertraut. Es fiel auf: Mobiltelefon ging oftmals nicht, dafür gab es Internet in fast jedem Hotel kostenlos. So konnte man sich verständigen.
