I LOVETHISPLACE!!! Here’s why… It has this charming quality to it. Raton is indeed tiny and the weather can get high up there depending on your time of travel. I haven’t witnessed or experienced any type of discrimination, racism, or blatant drug usage by locals, which is a good thing. I mention this because I’ve encountered some pretty crazy things my day and small towns can get very territorial and all that jazz. Anyway, the nearby stores are wonderful. I loved one of the corner stores that whipped up an amazing homemade raspberry tea. It was tart, refreshing, unsweetened(YUM), and comes with refills if you’re dining in! You can also find other places to fill up and even grab some New Mexico branded gadgets & goodies. Overall, the area is extremely quiet and pleasant. The AmTrack station itself is a barebones type of facility. Shelter in case you need something to protect yourself from the elements, a restroom to do business in, and plenty of outdoor space to bask in. NO, this is not the Ritz! This is a very humble location that can definitely use a lot of TLC. I just can’t help but support Raton since the Southweat Chief is their bloodline & is scheduled to be re-routed. SAVERATON&&KEEPTHECHIEF!!! So, if your stopover or connector is lengthy enough, prusing through the town of Raton is somewhat magical. in a rustic and ghost town type of way :)

I say 3 stars simply because I have so many good memories of waiting for the Southwest Chief here. The big amenity is a working toilet — oh, and a tiny waiting area that dates back to mid-last century. The alternative is to wait outside by the tracks which I normally do, but in bad weather, it’s good to have the option.

I have used this stations a ton of times going east and west. Its just a plain little town railroad station. It has an indoor and outdoor waiting area. The indoor waiting room is randomly locked some times, so if its cold just bundle up.

This station has been redone and is clean and functional. Nicest guy named Sam takes care of it and will bend over backward to help you. It has no amenities such as food or ticket info, and the town rolls up its sidewalks early, so if you’re stuck there due to weather, it can be cold and lonely unless Sam rescues you with his small town kindness.

This Amtrak station is sad and worn down, but as it’s only served by one train per day in each direction(the Southwest Chief) I can’t see them restoring it. I took the train here for Thanksgiving last year and nobody got on or off except my party.
