Trap Door is an Escape Room like no other. We focus on the story more than anything, creating a more immersive experience for our customers. For those who don’t know, an Escape Room is game where players enter a room and must solve puzzles and mysteries before the hour is up.

History

Established in 2015.

Trap Door Escape Room opened in October of 2015 and it has been a wild ride since. Their first theme Escape the Architect has seen over three thousand players. From the experienced to the amateur, players have been thrilled by this new type of entertainment. CEO, Anthony Purzycki, created Trap Door as a creative outlet. Purzycki and his partner Frank Giglia write and build the puzzles and stories together.

About 9 years ago, Purzycki was seeking a writer to rework a screenplay he had commissioned, the production company he brought it to introduced him to Giglia, fresh out of the New York Film Academy screenwriting program. As the two of them delved into the script, they realized they played well off each other, acknowledging when the other had a better idea and compromising when there was no clear winner. Getting rave reviews on the script, they knew there was something to this way of working, and a creative partnership was created.

Business Owner

Anthony Purzycki aka Tone began his journey into the entertainment with no tools at his disposal. He quickly learned he was out gunned. A relentless need to learn the industry brought him to the doors of some of the industries finest. Tone began his film education developing a feature film under the guidance of The Producer of the Academy Award winning film «Sling Blade», teaching Tone the ins and outs of the business, and more importantly the business of the business. Jeff Silverstein taught Tone story structure, and how every moment must have a reason and a payoff.

Now the proud owner of Trap Door Escape Room, Tone uses his movie magic skills and applies that to making Trap Door’s escape rooms the very best.

Went here with a group for my birthday and it was, by far, the most disappointing experience I’ve had in a while. Our guide was VERY condescending, unenthusiastic, and did not explain everything fully (Half of a group of ten had no idea that there was even a penalty for requesting a hint, let alone the severity. All of us were very angry to learn about the penalty midway through the game AFTER getting the hint. And when we called for our first hint, she was extremelyyyy rude). It was made well known by her that it was her boyfriend’s birthday, but she was stuck working with us. Aw, so sad. Poor you.
The rooms for Cure Z were very cheaply done, too, like we were just in someone’s garage. The bodies were just styrofoam mannequins from an art store, not even bothered to actually be made to look somewhat human. They weren’t even painted, beyond random blood spatter, haha. We all also had a big problem with one of the keys. Two people tried a key card in the proper lock… didn’t work. At all. We lost the game. And when we were shown where the next puzzle was (the lock that was the issue), we told the worker that we’ve been here and had this issue, which, of course, she dismissed us and was condescending. Then, the photo op. We were in a dark room and she told us to stand at the wall and took a photo from her iphone. That’s it.
It was such a cheap (yet, funnily expensive), disappointing experience. We all had such high hopes. Please get better employees and check that all of the locks are easy to be opened with keys/​key cards.

Trap door is a very unique experience. Unlike it’s competitors you can explore three levels of an entire building in an hour rather than being subjected to a small room that has broken locks and poor game masters. Staff seemed friendly. I would definitely check it out again.

We had a very negative overall experience. The staff was rude and condescending to us and the place itself was cheaply put together, dingy and just plain weird. Not to mention the cost… this place is very expensive! We wont be going back.

My friends and I did the Cure Z theme on it’s opening day. I thought the puzzles were engaging and we had a lot of fun, but there were a few things that could have been improved.
1) They only give you one flashlight and most of the room is pretty dimly lit. We had a party of ten, and most of the experience was yelling «Who has the flashlight?» or people walking around using light apps on their phone.
2) They could do a better job explaining the layout. I don’t want to spoil the game, but we ended up failing because we had no idea we missed an entire room. When we have done this at other places, they were much better about telling you which areas in building are and are not part of the game.
3) We had a large party, and there was another couple that was kind of shoved in with us. Now personally, we have no problem welcoming new people, but you could tell they were real uncomfortable and felt out of place. If you are selling to couples or small groups, you need to find some way to let them know they may be partnered with strangers, or do some kind of ice-​breaking exercise to help make that transition work better.
I am really hoping this was just growing pains because it was the first day for this particular theme. Like I said, the puzzles were engaging and pretty clever, but there was a lot of things that detracted from the game that made it feel almost unfair. I don’t mind failing, but it should be because of our own failings as a team, not because there was stuff that was not made clear to the player.
