Mercy Medical Center Redding

This hospital saved my dad’s life. For that I am grateful. ICU was amazing. The one star is for the treatment after being moved out of ICU. Many nurses don’t wear gloves, as they are supposed to, possibly spreading infections to others. They take a very long time to come check on people once the call button is pressed, (like an hour), other than a couple nurses that rock, they leave me feeling like they are clueless. Nurse named Will didn’t notice that my family member hadn’t peed his entire 12 hour shift. This caused my family member’s bladder to become the size of a football. He was already in a lot of pain from the surgery, then he had to suffer due to a lack of attentive care. Now, his drainage bag was taken out, even though he was still draining over 2x acceptable amount. He has been waiting hours for help with another issue, but because it is the weekend, nothing. So over this «care.» So much unacceptable stuff. If you have the choice, do not go here!
Now I found out the on call Dr. Okayed the nurse taking out his staples too soon. The surgeon found out and said they should have left them in. The nurse then had to re-​close the would with butterfly shaped «stickers». Seriouly, communication here is terrible. Between the staff to staff, and staff to the families. My dad went in to cardiac arrest last week and no one called my mom. Her phone number is on the board, that thing no one reads. The same nurse’s name was up there for days.
No, I will not pm you. I don’t need your bs excuses.
For the record Nurse Vanessa was amazing, kind, and all around fabulous. Tim in ICU was also amazing. Get more employees like them.

Although there were a few Nurses I felt very confident in and liked. My experience at this Hospital was scary. I had a great surgeon. But another doctor (along with residence) made medical orders for me that made me very ill. This doctor had no right to make orders for me, as my surgeon was taking care of me. I fell hard one night and it took 15 minutes of me yelling for help and pushing the nurses button before anyone came to help .Infact during my nine day stay at this hospital when pushing the nurses help button no one came in less than 10 minutes. One of the nurses administered potassium at 100% into my IV. This caused my arm to feel like it was on fire. It was extremely painful and she would not come back to my room and fix it, saying she had other patience and that she has 30 years exp. in nursing. When I asked questions regarding what was being put into my IV most of the nursing staff did not want to answer these questions, and behaved as if I was rude for asking When I noticed I was vomiting a green substance after surgery and asked the nurse to tell the doctor she argued with me saying it was probably due to the surgery (yeah, I knew that) I finally convinced her to call him and it turned out I needed a draining of this fluid (through a tube) and would have become very sick without it. There are many very young nurses that have not enough experience and argued with me over everything, including my pain medicine. I left this hospital before my surgeon wanted due to feeling unsafe in this facility.

So pleased with Mercy ER after our recent visit for the 1^st time that I wanted to write a positive review. We’re new to Redding and used to having access to University quality hospitals in SoCal so I was a bit nervous when my 4 year old broke his radius and it was in a trauma state. Mercy ER nurses & doctors were so wonderful with him and made him feel comfortable and relaxed. He was consciously sedated so they could reset his radius. The next morning he was so excited to tell his siblings about his stuffed monkey and stickers they gave him at the hospital. After visiting the orthopedic I’m ecstatic to say that they said that his radius was reset so well by Mercy that he won’t be needing orthopedic surgery (which was the original plan)

I am an ICU Trauma travel nurse. GREAT hospital to work for. I would be a patient her ANY day and feel comfortable being taken care of by any given staff member, nurse or physician. Very competent staff. Loved everyone here. Beautiful, compassionate human beings. May God bless each and every one of you. You will be missed. You all get an A ++ on my review!!!

My wife entered the ER in acute abdominal pain. She was given immediate attention. From ER to Triage through surgery and recovery, she received 5 star care. I would highly recommend Mercy Medical Center in Redding, California.

This is by far the best ER we have ever been to! My 10 month old daughter was running a really bad fever and when we got there they rushed us in and had her checked out by a nurse in less then an hour. They were so great with her, explaining to us what they were going to do. and then explaining to her what they were doing. The dr and nurses were sweet, gentle, and very attentive. We will definitely be coming here again if we have any problems (hopefully we won’t)!!

insurance coverage is not the way any normal consumer would expect.
Dignity (Mercy) Hospital is listed as being in network with Anthem Blue Cross Most consumers will assume that any service you receive is also In Network! Beware! When I was rushed to the hospital for an emergency. We decided to go to Mercy (Redding) instead of Shasta Regional Medical Center… Big Mistake!, We got a bill from the ER Doctor who demanded we pay out of pocket hundr dos of dollars because he was not a Anthem contracted Doctor. I was blessed to have Anthem cover the bill after an appeal. I spoke to an admistrator at Mercy Hospital who said, «I have had other people complain about the huge bills.“so, I will follow up with a letter to the hospital. Our plan managers (Shasta Trinity Schools said it was our responsibility to make sure that the doctor was in-​network. I asked how I was supposed to do that in an emergency situation? Stop the WER Doctor before looking at my broken leg and say,“Can you find me a different Doctor… We will avoid Mercy hospital until they can provide only in network medical staff! Boycott Mercy until they step up and protect our finances as we would assume they already do. Shasta Regional Hospital promises that all services within the hospital are in network. If Mercy had been unaware of this issue I could understand but the ad in knows and continues this practice.

I am only giving one star to Mercy Medical Center, Redding, because of their billing. Hello human kindness? Goodbye great customer service! Update: nothing was good about their billing but you cannot leave less than one star!!!

Came in at 8pm waited over 5 hours for a bed. When u asked the clerk behind the desk how long I would have to wait her response was «well if there was an extra bed you would be in it.»…as I was finally taken back I counted 3 open beds. …it’s now almost 3am and I still can’t get seen …

Great experience on their orthopedic unit. Caring staff that listen to your needs. Gifted surgeons. I’ve had nothing but good outcomes with both my surgeries.

I took my girlfriend to the ER here because of her nausea was getting to its worse point again. Thanks to the morning staff and Pamela Ikuta, our visit was very very VERY quick and pleasant. We are still amazed on how very friendly and professional the staff is here in Redding. Also a very clean facility. Less than 2hrs we were in and out! We’re so used to 10−14hr visits with fights and screaming in the waiting room not to mention hostile staffing in Berkeley. Thank you for making our visit as enjoyable as we can given the circumstances. ⁵⁄₅ stars!!!

Great team, great culture, amazing care; hello humankindness! From the admitting staff, to the volunteers, nursing, Respiratory Care, radiology, environmental services… Everyone is committed to doing the right thing– couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this team!

Been here twice in two days with my daughter with a high grade fever and they have been nothing but rude it took them 2 hours just to give her tylanol. 4 hours later we are still in the waiting room. The service is aweful

If you’re ever in the Redding area, Mercy Hospital is really nice in 105 degree temps. My intelligent son sliced his thumb with his knife trying to get his bike lock out for his bike.
The hospital staff was very nice and tried to accommodate us as we waited nearly 5 hours to have my son’s thumb stitched up but when you’re the only trauma center in Northern California and there is one of the largest fires in recent history on the same day, you take a back seat to the more seriously injured.
Glad we finally got home in the San Francisco bay area at midnight.

We would give this hospital a higher score, except my husband was discharged without a diagnosis! Even when going to the Dr’s office for a visit, you’re supposed to get a diagnosis. lol
My husband developed a very high fever (almost 104) in the course of an afternoon. I came home and found him under covers when it was 100 outside, looked under the covers and saw that his leg was super red and hot and told him we were going to the hospital because I thought he had a staph infection. Never having had to go to the hospital since we’ve moved here, I hopped on the internet to see who had better reviews and Mercy did, hands down.
So I took him to Mercy’s ER and as soon as they did triage and saw that his vitals were all over the place, they immediately took him back despite other people being there first. They brought the head ER doctor over immediately and starting interviewing him, drawing blood and taking x-​rays to find out what was going on with him. Within an hour they had him hooked up to an IV and antibiotics going on the concern that it might be MRSA since he became ill so fast.
He was admitted to hospital and stayed there for 2 days. During our entire time there, the nursing staff in the both the ER and the hospital rooms were amazing! We’ve all had those nurses that hate their jobs and want you, as the patient, to be totally aware of it. But the nurses here were so kind, friendly, and went out of their way to help you. Really, the best nursing staff I’ve ever witnessed (as a whole)!
The doctor in the ER was great, but once he was admitted, we never knew when the hospital doctor was going to be there, when my husband was going to get discharged, and like I said, he was discharged without a diagnosis, which is really weird! When we inquired as to what made him ill, they just kept saying they were waiting for the blood work to come back, which never came back before he was discharged. So I tried to get that information after he was discharged and because he doesn’t have a primary doctor, he would have to go pick up his own medical records, which is only open from 9 – 4 (during our working hours). So, it all ended on a not so high note, but in the end I am very thankful that they recognized there was a serious problem very quickly and took action to get my honey on the road to recovery! P. S. He is all better now thanks to Mercy :)

With one big exception i have had excellent service with these folks. In 203 i spent a month in their ICU. They were great. My bad experience was about three years later. I had very bad pain in my belly. However, i had previously had gastric bypass surgery in Klamath Falls, Or. They refused to treat me and referred me to K-​Falls. There a benign tumor the size of a small grape fruit was removed. Totally missed after three days in Mercy.

Both children were born here. Friends and family work here and hearing the inside scoop is encouraging. I’m a frequently flyer at the ER and peds and while sometimes it takes WAAAY too long to get admitted, the care is excellent once inside. Major renovations have taken place and hopefully the ER will be more efficient in the near future.
Tips: The cafeteria on the bottom floor is actually pretty good, there is a nice coffee bar there as well but the hours are short. You can always find a snack or drink of some sort at a large coin operated vending machine area when the cafeteria is closed. For an amazing view go to the top floor of the parking garage and look to the East. Sunrises are amazing from here.

Last week I went to my doctor with a blinding headache. Before I knew what was happening, I was riding an ambulance to the emergency room, where they stuck an IV in my arm and pumped me full of morphine and repeated cocktails of drugs selected to prevent my skyrocketing blood pressure from popping my head like a cherry bomb in a cantaloupe.
Mercy is a teaching hospital. «The Residents» admitted me and became my doctors of record. I’m not 100% clear on the stepwise educations of M.D.‘s, but I believe that Residents have completed their book learnin’ and are now obtaining their shop learnin’. They’re like M.D.‘s with learners’ permits. They can drive, but only with an adult in the car. I don’t have a history of high BP, so I became an educational vehicle for The Residents — their task over the next few days was to figure out why Buzz was about to develop brain bubbles. They were about what you would expect — earnest, obviously mystified, and over-​bluffing the confidence. I underwent test after test after test in search of The Proximate Cause of My Malady. As a result, we now know a lot about what’s not wrong with me.
I was cool with all of that. Their supervising adults appeared to be supremely capable. Those veterans included the renal specialist, a gentle-​natured guy who didn’t want to discharge me out of fear that I would immediately have sexual congress with the Teacher Lady and stroke out in the act. Also the doctor who eventually discharged me – this guy was like the Platonic Ideal of a prime-​time medical drama doctor: Surfer-​dude handsome, self-​assured, wise-​cracking, totally in charge… I half expected his teeth to twinkle when he grinned.
But all in all, I hated the hospital experience. You got a problem with your blood pressure? You don’t want to be in a goddamned hospital, your Proximate Cause the target of a fishing expedition.
So this five-​star review is mostly about the nurses. Having not been hospitalized since I had my tonsillectomy as a kid, my experience with nurses has comprised getting weighed, BP-​cuffed, thermometered, and pre-​briefed on visits to my general practitioner.
Mercy’s nurses literally made me feel like a human being who doesn’t measure up to the full potential of our species.
Their level of professionalism was beyond the fringe — way out there on the fourth standard deviation from the mean, good side of the bell curve. I went through at least half-​a-​dozen nurses while I was there, and not once did I sense that a single nurse was mailing it in. (Some days, I spend half the day mailing it in at work.) My nurses were superhuman in their focus, diligence, and skill.
But it was their compassion that really opened my eyes. It was not of this world. They were saintly in their capacity to provide empathetic care. Of course, how they treated me was understandable, given my boyish good looks, witty intelligence, and engaging demeanor. :cough: Consider my roommate, covered in prison ink. A shady story, told over and over, about being admitted after being beaten senseless with a 2″ x 4″ at a gas station, always followed by another story regarding his frontal lobe damage from taking a gang beating while at Chino State (not a college). This second story rang true — he seemed to have some problems with impulse control and emotional modulation (think «Eeyore» from Winnie the Pooh, but less the pessimist and more the sad sack). He was unfailingly polite, but squirrelly. Restless and noisy. Messy.
I returned from one of my angiograms to find him sitting in the chair next to my bed, talking to his mom — who was by now refusing his collect calls — on my cell phone. «I have to go, Mom. My roommate is back, and it’s his phone. I know, Mom. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. Have a good birthday, Mom. Don’t worry about me.»
Heartbreaking, but also grating given that I’m semi-​autistic about personal space. I’m a lesser human being than my nurses, so I recoiled from his presence, and shortly after the phone incident I had to tell the nurse on duty that they needed to split us up or I had to check out, because my blood pressure wasn’t going to go south until I had a break from the roomie.
Now then: For every measure of tenderness that my nurses gave to me, they showered more on my damaged roommate. He seemed like a guy who had not had one single good break in his life, and had made lots of bad decisions, and was probably used to being shunned as a lost cause. But our nurses treated him like he was an orphaned child, in need of far more than mere medical care. They were almost magically compassionate.
During my stay, I recalled a line from the TV show «Nurse Jackie.» «Doctors don’t heal,» she tells a fledgling nurse. «Doctors diagnose. Nurses heal.»
Amen, sister. Amen.
Lastly, if you ever find yourself hospital-​dazed, you will want a loving and engaged advocate in your corner to be your lifeline and your brain. Thank you, TL. Love you.
