Julian August Aveda Concept Salon & Store

Julian August Salon in general, and Marissa Baca, in particular is truly a phenomenal salon. I moved to California to obtain my professional degree and I fumbled around from one salon to another, decrying the atrocious so-​called «hair cuts» that I had. Then, I found Julian August. My hair was long and shapeless and in desperate need of some TLC. Marissa took my mess and gave me an adorable pixie that complimented my face shape and hair texture. When my pixie grew out into a faux mullet, Marissa fixed it into a great transition haircut. She also gave me suggestions for how to do my hair for an out-​of-​state wedding during my second haircut. As far as the salon itself is concerned, it has a soothing feng shui and all of the staff are courteous and friendly. I was offered a beverage during my cut and was able to choose between tea and coffee; my iced tea was refreshing and delicious. As part of my cut, I was also given a head massage in conjunction with the shampoo. I will continue to go to Julian August and Marissa as long as I live in Southern California. For all the miracles you do to my hair, I sincerely thank you.

I absolutely love this salon. I see either marissa or Alisha and both stylists are amazing. I’ve been coming here for years now and I can’t tell you how happy I am. I recently moved an hour away and still make the drive, even to just get my brows waxed. The customer service is the best and the girls in the front are always smiling and very nice. I’ve had only twice where I left and didn’t like my hair when I got home, I called and they had no issue redoing my hair as soon as I could go in. The prices are a little more pricy then other salons in the area but I have learned you get what you pay for. I would recommend his salon to anyone!

I was looking for a Salon closer to me to call home. After reading through a number of reviews of various Salons I called to make an appointment at Julian August unfortunately the two stylists I requested based on the Unilocal reviews are no longer there. I explained my concern about my hair (as its growing out from a pixie and recovering from a bleaching process) and William was suggested. Upon entrance the customer service was as noted … Excellent! William was equally as gracious and took note of all my concerns. He walked me through each product used, offered tips on how to blow dry my hair and applying heat treatments at home. It is worth noting although products are sold and suggested no pressure is applied which maintained the relaxing experience of the scalp massage and herbal tea provided to their customers.

Have been getting my hair done here for about a year. Always a great experience. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. I’m always offered something to drink as soon as I check in.
Heather is an AMAZING stylist! I always bring pictures with me and she gets the cut and color perfect every time. Scalp and hand massages are an added perk.

Erin is simply the best stylist we have had in SoCal! We’re so happy to have gone to her over the past 2+ years! She even does awesome scalp massages and offers a warm towel after rinsing your hair. It’s the royal treatment for sure!
The entire team is so warm & welcoming from the time you enter and make us fresh brewed iced tea (the small things and kind gestures go a long way), the whole team says hi as you walk through the salon, and they even send you a text reminder of your appt! How nice and high tech. It’s definitely not the typical hair salon.
Thanks for making us your handsome husbands! We’re both going to miss you a lot when we move to West Seattle next week. :(

I’d been going to the same stylist for 10 years… he is amazing and I love his work but I moved and the salon was too far given my crazy schedule.
I did some research and decided to give Julian August a try. I was extremely nervous about the change in salon/​stylist… Jocelyn totally put my mind at ease. She was sensitive to my «situation» and an excellent listener when I explained what I wanted done. She did an amazing job with my cut, so much so that i decided to change the color. My hair is completely transformed from the first time I set foot in the salon and I absolutely love it. I’ve gotten a ton of compliments too, which never hurts :)
They also have great wi-​fi. I have my hair done during the week, take my laptop and work while Jocelyn does my hair. This efficiency at its best, IMHO. On one visit my color took longer than expected and overlapped a conference call… they found a quiet area in the back so I could join the meeting, then brought me back out to continue the work. Seriously unexpected but great service!
Last but definitely not least, they do complimentary scalp and hand massages.
I always look forward to my salon visits!

I just read a review from a disgruntled customer on Google about my stylist, and how disappointed she was with the service she was provided. I’ve done some pretty silly things to my hair over the last few years, from going dark, to red and back to light blonde. I cut my bangs, my ends and recently colored it PINK… (Not on purpose) Then orange, trying to fix the pink, and finally a nice brassy gold. She scolds me for my hair mishaps and smiles sweetly at my sassy come backs, but always knows how to fix my hair with out extreme damage or cutting it all off. She does such a wonderful job, I now tell her to do whatever she wants. ASK HER! So if for any reason satisfaction was not found in the experience with Lauren, it is my opinion that the service was accepted by the customer. I guarantee she was gorgeous walking out the door.

Jocelyn was a miracle worker with my fine, wavy hair. I was lucky enough to get a last minute appointment before the holiday and she did a FABULOUS job. Best haircut I’ve had in a long time!

I have been going to Jocelyne for over 2 years and she is the best. From amazing reds, dramatic color transformations (red red to golden sun-​kissed blonde), to helping me keep my long hair looking healthy throughout it all she is amazing! Would recommend her without a doubt. Everyone at the salon is friendly and helpful.

OMG I love this place! Went to this salon for the first time yesterday and I loved it. Lauren is amazing. For the first time in as long as I can remember I was 100% satisfied with my hair when I left the salon. They’re a bit on the pricey side but it’s worth every penny. Lauren was able to fix the color mess that was my hair and make it look exactly like I had pictured. Will definitely be back!!!

If you have long hair and would like to see someone about having it styled and colored, you’re in good hands with Jocelyn at Julian August Aveda Salon.
First, I appreciated the courteous receptionist on the phone when I called to make the appointment. I appreciated the availability that Jocelyn had within the timeframe that I needed someone. Finally, I appreciated the reminder phone call about the appointment.
Next, I most definitely appreciated a call asking me if I could move my appointment to a half hour later. While it is understandable that no one likes having their appointment changed, it’s a whole lot better than getting to the salon on time and waiting around. I appreciate the «keeping customer informed» approach. Life happens. Things change. As long as there is communication, that’s the way to take care of customers.
Upon arriving at the salon, it’s a great little location and the Aveda store part always looks neat and clean. I was promptly helped by the receptionist (Briana, I believe), offered something to drink, and Jocelyn came right away; I did not have to sit and wait (even though there is a nice area to sit).
I discussed what I wanted with Jocelyn while showing her a picture. She went over the details with me and showed me a color book for brunette shades. I am used to a stock color palette from a standard brochure that salons usually have, but Jocelyn had cut out pictures of different shades of brown. It was definitely a different approach. Then we got started with the coloring. She colored each and every strand of my hair. This was different from what I have ever experienced, and I hope it continues because it was so much better than slabbing it in my hair and clumping all the hair on top (which is what I am used to). This was done neatly and professionally. She had a nice conversational approach — not too much, not too little, and she was very kind.
After all of the pieces were covered in hair color, I was offered magazines to read, something to drink, and then… get this… a HAND MASSAGE. This was such a nice thing to receive. After this it was time to rinse. She did such a nice, thorough job in washing and rinsing; it was very much appreciated. We sat down for rinsing before and stayed even longer than another stylist who came to rinse. I noticed that, and felt pretty happy that my stylist took more time. ;)
After the rinse, we started the cutting. Jocelyn was careful to not take too much off of the length, as I requested, and then she cut the rest of my hair while it was somewhat dry. This was definitely a new approach, but it made sense! Sometimes you don’t really get a sense of the length until it’s dry; I liked it. She was so very highly detailed. Also, when I noticed that I would be more comfortable with more layers and let her know this, she immediately discussed our new plan of action before just attacking. She was never rude, short, or condescending (as some stylists could be after having to make adjustments). She went with what I requested and even made it known that she would be more than happy to make changes if I would like.
The hair turned out beautifully, and it was such a great feeling to finally leave a salon feeling a) happy with my cut, b) happy with my color, and c) comfortable with what I just paid for. That hasn’t happened in quite some time.
Some things that were very important to me were hearing that she loved doing hair (which she said), continuing to learn new techniques and styles all of the time (training is every Tuesday), and that the most important thing to her is to always be kind and compassionate.
Yes, I will definitely be returning to see Jocelyn.

Going to keep it short and strait to the point. Made an apt with lauren, went from my natural brown to burgundy and i love the results!!! Definintely the color i wanted and for sure going back! 100% satisfied :)

I recommend Lauren she color corrected my hair since it was a disaster. She was able to fix it exactly how I wanted it.

When I moved to Riverside from San Diego, it was very hard to find a good Aveda salon near by. I can be very hard to please when it comes to finding a good hair salon. I am so grateful that I came across Julian August salon.
I get my haircut by Erin. So far I’ve been here twice and my hair looks amazing each time. Erin listens to my concerns about my hair and designs a haircut around those concerns. She genuinely wants her clients to be satisfied with her haircuts. (The scalp massage at the beginning of the hair is always a bonus too!).
If you’re an Aveda addict and in the market for a beautiful haircut, here’s your place!

I have gotten my hair cut from Jocelyne twice now. This review is a little late… I got my hair cut from her about a month and a half ago. I agree that it is pricey but you get what you pay for. From the moment you walk into the salon they accommodate you with a smile and an offer to have water or tea. Customer service is a big deal for me, and Julian August does not disappoint.
Jocelyne is the first stylist to listen to me about appreciating/​keeping my long hair. In the past, I would tell stylists that I wanted a haircut while maintaining the general length of my hair (e.g. cut 3 – 4 inches off) and they would reassure me that they understood and then cut 6 – 7 inches. I would even show them pictures with people who had similar facial shapes and features to mine as a template, but my hair would look nothing like the photo. But Jocelyne takes time to ask you about your hair on your first visit, gets an idea of what you want, and does her very best to adhere to your request. I’m very picky with my hair, but she delivered.
Jocelyne also understands and knows how to manage Asian hair. I showed her a photo and asked her for her advice as well, and she didn’t try to impose her way on me. Throughout the haircut she will ask you what you think intermittently in case you change your mind about length… most places just do the job and you don’t get a say til the end (unless you interrupt them) when it is often too late. She was also the first person who successfully cut long layers on me– at other places I’ve gone to, they make me look ok when I leave the salon, but as soon as I wash my hair, my hair goes right back to looking like it belongs to a mangy beast. I have fine Asian hair that used to be stick straight but has since been dehydrated from one too many (disaster) perms, and I also have a LOT of it, but she knows how to tame my wild mane– and have it stay that way for a good amount of time. :)
Jocelyne is easy to talk to and sweet, and gives the best scalp massages. I’ve never gotten so many compliments on my hair from just having a haircut until I came to Jocelyne– I’ve referred 3 people to her already (who have all loved their experiences with her) and plan on continuing that. You feel so lovely after you leave here. Thank you, Jocelyne!
TIP: Bring cash for a tip because you can’t add it to your credit card total.

Came here last week to get a cut and I left feeling like a celebrity… well sort of, but my hair was fantastic!
I actually just read about the review about Erin messing up on the reviewer Katie’s hair, which perplexes me because I had Erin cut my hair, and she did a fantastic job! She really listened to me on what I wanted and really asks questions to dig deep to get specifics. She is very personable and easy to talk to, so it my haircut flew by.
This place is a little pricey, but definitely worth every penny. It’s been a while since I’ve gotten a great haircut and excited to say that I am able to go to a hair salon regularly and not worry about the turn-​out of my hair.

Meet Ellen. Super picky with haircuts, but polite. I know how to put on a fake smile for haircuts that Aren’t. So. Good.
This salon however, is pricey for an experienced hair stylist, but worth it for someone as picky as me. Leticia is so meticulous and wonderful. She also gave me a great scalp massage. I showed her a picture of what I thought would look good for my face but also asked for her advice. She was not pushy at all, but helpful in sharing her professional expertise. I’m Asian with somewhat thick hair, and it is difficult to find a hair stylist who knows how to work my hair without making it look stringy and unkempt. In other words, she knows how to cut layers, and add volume with the shears without cheating with the thinning shears (for my type of hair). The receptionist at the front desk was also very nice. So moral lesson: fork it up for an awesome haircut if you’re picky like me. *Genuine smile*
One more note, Aveda products smell so fresh and so clean. So fresh and soooo clean:)
Retrospect: haircut didn’t look good after a month. But I’m picky.

I’m writing this in response to the person who wrote the negative review for Asian hair.
I am full Asian and have very long thick straight hair and have been coming to Lupe at Julian August for the past 4 years. She has always done an amazing job with my hair, I receive compliments everywhere I go because she is so talented. I’ve had many hair stylists, but she is by far the best one.
I’m not really sure what being Asian has to do with the type of haircut you receive. In my opinion, hair is just hair. It might be fine or coarse, straight or curly. But in the end, I think it’s how you communicate with your stylist that’s important. All I can say is that in all of my many visits to Julian August (and there have been many!) I have never once left disappointed or unhappy. I highly recommend them and have referred many friends there also.

If you’re asian I don’t recommend going to any aveda. I noticed that they do the same type of hair cut at all the aveda’s I’ve been to. I thought it was just the individual stylist but nope it seems like they get trained to cut a certain way and it’s not good for asian hair. And I mean asian hair that is stick straight and thick. Now if you’re filipino and your hair is thick and slightly wavy I’m sure they’ll do fine on your hair.
It was overpriced for a not the best haircut. My bangs were cut too short after I said I wanted side-​swept bangs and they were really weird. Like one side was extra long and one side was really short above my eyebrows.
The good thing about this place was that the girl I got was able to even up my layers from the last bad hair cut I got at Regis in Moreno Valley. Aside from the horrible bangs, it was just an ok haircut.
Positives about this place: Their products smell great. Staff was nice.
