History

Established in 2000.

I started JD Tree Service in 2000 after working for two other local tree services. I saw things in those jobs that are a standard in the industry, that weren’t acceptable to me. This included little regard for safety, damaging the surrounding landscape, loosening gutters from homes with falling branches, damaging fences and horrible attempts at pruning done by workers with little or no training. I knew I could do tree work to a much higher standard than that. In fact, I wanted to provide the highest standard of service in our industry. With that in mind, I asked my cousin, Doug, if he wanted to start a tree service with me.

We started by taking ornamental tree pruning classes at the Seattle arboretum and through the International Society of Arboriculture. We continued this education and expanded on it to learn the intricacies of everything from lace leaf maple pruning to rigging down 2,000 pound sections of storm damaged trees. As our knowledge grew, so did our business.

I am originally from Michigan and moved to the Seattle area in 1998 to attend The University of Washington. I worked for two tree services during the summers. This experience sparked my curiosity about trees, large conifers specifically, and I was hooked. I knew that I wanted to become an arborist and work with trees for the rest of my life. I truly love my job and would do it for free if I could. I am passionate about educating people about their trees. I also enjoy many other outdoor pursuits including football, hiking, basketball, biking, rock climbing or any adventure sport. I also enjoy traveling the world to see exotic ecosystems.

This is more like a «pre-​review»; the reason we’re *going* to use JD when we’re ready to get our work done:
I contacted several services when I was looking for fresh logs for mushroom inoculation. I got one very uninterested «I’ll tell the owner you asked» and then nothing… until John got my email. He not only responded positively, he enthusiastically researched mushroom spawn in logs and told me what he had on hand that might suit. He listened to what I was looking for and contacted me as soon as he had what I wanted. He cut them to the right lengths, invited us to his home to pick them up on a weekend, labelled them and carried them to the truck. He did all this for us twice. Apparently he helps out wood sculptors the same way.
All of that was wonderful, but then we spent some time talking. We saw how much love and respect he has for trees. He showed us the decisions he had made that allowed him to keep his own trees intact (attention Seattle arborists! There’s more to it than removal!). He inadvertently displayed his love for and kindness to animals… in general, he proved himself a decent, honest, thoughtful and helpful human being. Megan responded to email when he wasn’t around and was just as warm. This is a company I’d like to do business with.

My husband and I have been researching tree removal services for a few months now, and finally we settled on having JD Tree Service come out and help us with some trees (2 which we wanted removed, and some pruning also). They are very knowledgeable, and we just generally enjoyed their professional approach. They have been very prompt in their responses. Others have mentioned that they were pricey, but we felt they were very reasonable, given the quality of work, and the safe approach they use. They left our garden very clean after the removal. They told us that they had arranged for someone to come pick up the remaining tree stumps, and later that evening, someone arrived and took them away, so we were delighted with their organization skills on getting the remaining stumps removed.
We will definitely consider them in the future again if we need any further work carried out.

Great service. Not only do you actually see copies of their business license, contractor’s surety bond, liability insurance and a ton of references but John actually works with his guys and really knows what he is talking about. They were fast, efficient and knowledgeable and had our fallen tree removed quickly. After meeting with a number of tree removal companies, this was clearly the best.

We had a few trees that were dead and needed to come down. One was a giant Sweet Gum tree in the middle of our deck. The cons I list here are not huge problems — just noticings. I would use them again in a heartbeat. The other companies I had come out had 4 and 5 stars on Unilocal,but after talking with a certified arborist, found that they were incorrect about our trees. John was the only one who had it right!
Pros:
–very knowledgeable and explained exactly what was happening with the trees and why they needed to come down
–they have referrals for a certified arborist and tree stump removal (we used both, and both were good)
–they have a guy who comes out and takes the fire wood that’s left behind for free (I didn’t want to keep it)
–provided proof of their license and insurance
–owner, John, does the work himself, along with an assistant
–friendly, polite, and trustworthy
–Megan answers the office phone and is very helpful and friendly
–after taking down some fence to get to a tree, they put the fence right back up, good as new
Cons.ish:
–expensive — more than twice the cost of the two other estimates we had
–in the middle of working on my trees, he went next door to ask if he could provide his services to work on my neighbor’s trees, then proceeded to do an estimate for him (I just told myself it must have been done during their break)
–unforeseen event of having to go through my neighbor’s yard to get to a couple trees, which was not discussed beforehand.
–cleaning up meant taking a leaf blower and blowing it all against the fence (just the saw dust — not branches)
–they don’t do stump grinding so although they contract out, I still had to wait for the guy to call, then set up a separate date and payment for it
–only accept cash or check

I cant say enough good about JD Tree service. They were absolutely superb! I had a large plum tree removed at my rental and since I live 3000 miles away, I thought it would be difficult to arrange but John at JD tree service did the job promptly and went out of his way to send me pictures and even covered the stump with dirt and mulch so it looks amazing! I highly recommend them!

During the October windstorm, we had a tree fall onto our house. I called a few places, and John was willing to come out within an hour to remove the tree from my house. Work was done really well: they removed the tree, assessed the damage on the roof, cleaned out the gutters (not kidding) and raked up the debris.

I didn’t actually use them for tree work, we scheduled then had to change our plans about the tree altogether. but i had to write a review on their professionalism. they were easy to schedule for the initial assessment… we messed up getting our notice of cancellation to them (we had some other issues come up had to deal with that week)… they showed up on time and we felt awful for the mixup. I would definitely recommend these guys for getting an initial assessment done, they are quick to respond and prompt. from other reviews i’ve read they do great work too of course!

Just had JD Tree Service out to prune many of the trees on our property. They did an excellent job and were very professional. Free estimates and easy scheduling. They showed up on time and cleaned up afterward. The trees look great and I appreciate the advice they gave to not prune our big tree in the back. Our neighbor is having them come out soon to do work in their yard!

My experience with JD tree service was excellent.
I had a mostly dead corkscrew willow in front of a fence on the front side of the property (Kirkland city hall could see the degraded canopy from satellite images). I called up, got an accurate quote and then a few days later they came back with the equipment to do the job. Not only did they take out the tree, they didn’t damage the fence (a concern) and cleaned up afterwards. After they ground out the stump, it was like there was never a tree there.
I will definitely contact them again if we need to remove another tree!

They were very professional, knowledgeable, and seemed to actually care about our trees versus making a quick buck. We asked about wind sailing our trees for upcoming Pacific NorthWest storms, and they actually advised against it, explaining it was not healthy for the trees. They were more then happy to help with our small peach tree, and are coming back in a few months to help care for it, without KILLING it! A BIG plus. They made an appointment and kept it! They even put in writing what they were going to do, and what day and time they would do it! By the way, THEY come and do the work. they do not send anyone else, and they are happy to answer questions and work with you on maintaining your trees. They even pointed out some erosion problems which we are having taken care of this month! I have found my tree guys!

The most honest guys in the tree business. Doug came out to give me an estimate and talked me out of most of the work I was looking to get done. He pointed out that the trees were healthy, and there were no guarantees that branches wouldn’t still come down. He suggested that I’d be better served saving the money for potential roof repairs.
