History

Established in 1993.

A: Mac Rankin and Jack Schropp founded Mac & Jack’s in 1993 and are still active in the day to day operations.

Q: When was Mac & Jack’s started?

A: We sold our first keg in April of 1994 to Billy McHales in Redmond, WA.

Q: Is Mac and Jack’s associated with any other company?

A: Mac & Jack’s Brewery has been owned solely by Mac and Jack since it was founded. We continue to be a small local Northwest Company.

Q: How many people work for Mac & Jack’s?

A: We started with two employees Mac & Jack, and now have about twenty employees.

Q: Who created African Amber?

A: African Amber is a slight variation on one of Mac’s original homebrew recipes.

Q: How did African Amber get its name?

A: African Amber started as a house beer for the Park Pub which is located next to the Woodland Park Zoo. The beer was named by Bruce Springer, who owned the pub at the time; he played off the Zoo theme to create the name.

Mac and Jacks has the best beer around. Go on a fun tour get free samples and a Mac and Jack glass. Next time you get a keg it will for sure be a Mac and Jack beer. Don’t forget when you take a tour to fill up a growler. YUM YUM!!!

Great Beer. Every time I go in They have a new type. Love to see they are growing. If I am out and about to eat and want a beer this brewery is always my fall back if they don’t have a dark beer for me (I am a Dark beer guy) I just wish they had a place to sit and have a beer with friends. The tours on the weekend are always a great time and they know what they are talking about.

Reserved and picked up a Pony Keg of Mac&Jack’s African Amber for a Housewarming Party. So easy to do over the phone, you don’t pay until you pick up. Pick up was very easy and staff was so cool to deal with, drop off was even easier and didn’t need the same credit card on me to return, just printed a receipt and put deposit back on the card. Will definitely use again and soon!

Went for a tour this father’s day. Excellent! Fun, interesting, and free samples. Went in knowing nothing about brewing and left knowing something. Short and cool Sunday activity. Good place to see what kind of beers you like/​dislike.

I encountered the ol’ African Amber early in my beer drinking career, and ’tis a rite of visiting the great state of Washington to partake in two or three upon every visit. The beer itself is fantastic, but I tend to find that’s more of a personal preference.
On my last time through I was fortunate enough to swing by for the weekend tour, and can validate nothing but five stars for the total lack of pretentiousness going on at this spot, as well as the dope pint glass you get as a free take home.
I want to say something along the lines of «never change», but as I don’t know when I’ll be back up y’alls way, if you decided to do expand your distribution in the not too distant future I’d be much obliged.

Dear Mac and Jacks,
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thy amber art more lovely and more temperate.
Two Ton doth shake the darling buds of my mouth,
And the rotating tap hath all to short a date.
But for cereals guys. This place is awesome. They got far more than the delightful PNW African Amber staple. And now they’ve bottled two special brews, which having bought and imbibed both I can state with certainty are frackin’ FANTASTIC.
If you havent come here for the free tour and beer, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!

Mac & Jacks has one of the best tours in the area now that the $ 1 Redhook tour is gone! And this one is completely FREE!
Tours are offered Saturdays and Sundays at 1 and 3. They last about an hour. When you show up you are given four or five drink tickets which let you sample their delicious beers throughout the tour. You can try the classics, like the African Amber, or whatever specialty brews they have going on. I thoroughly enjoyed the C-​U Lator Barleywine Ale.
The tour guide gave us some interesting information about the history of the company and the beer making process while also acknowledging that, let’s get real, everyone just wants the free beer!
He sent us home with a Mac & Jacks pint glass. Awesome! We also left with a growler fill and a sweatshirt. They have a nice little merchandise stand too. What a great time!

I went on a beer tour here on a Saturday. I loved that Mack & Jack’s is a local beer served in lots of places in the Washington area. While beer is not my 1st drink of choice, I liked how Mac & Jack’s wasn’t crazy trendy like some of the breweries I couldn’t tour without advance reservations. We didn’t have to make a reservation and the tour and tastings were FREE and you get a free pint glass with their cool lion logo. In a time when craft breweries are the new thing and popping up everywhere, Mac & Jack’s has made a good impression and stands above many of the rest.

This is one of my favorite craft breweries. I make sure to drink some every time I visit Seattle. I would give them 6 stars, but since they don’t sell it here in Texas I am only giving 5

I love this place. I’ve done the tour twice now, and the second time was so much better than the first because it was a smaller group – we’re talking maybe 40 people the first time, and 7 the second time. It’s not a big brewery or a long tour, but you get free pint glasses, free tastings, and a really good history of the beer. Additionally, with the smaller group, there were a lot more questions being asked. From this, I learned that a lot of their ingredients are sourced locally (they even use filter Redmond city water)!
Growler fills are SUPER reasonable, they have great hours, and the staff is really, really friendly. I sometimes wish I could pick up a six pack at the store, but having these guys nearby makes it worth the trip out for the growler fill.
Also, although the African Amber is amazing, try all the different types of beer they have, you’ll find they’re all JUST as amazing as the African Amber. Last time we went on the tour, there were some batches brewed by employees (like experimental flavors), and they were really tasty. I’m not sure if you can get growler fills of those flavors, but you can at least have a taste!

I’ve been through the tour twice and loved it both times. We were the only ones in line for the tour both times so we never had an empty beer during the tour. The guys were cool and didn’t seem annoyed knowing that they were going to have to do another tour for a party of four. Because of this, I’ve probably spent thousands at various bars during the past 13 years drinking the African Amber. Their storefront is not a drinking establishment. You show up to either fill your growlers and/​or go on the tour.

Mac and Jack if def. A place to check out and will recommend going on Sat or Sunday at 1pm or 3pm for the tour. It use to only be once and week and got so crowded with 100 people showing up. Now its about 25 to 30 people at max with 4 showings. Its free, you get to sample, and also take home a pint glass. The tour itself is relaxed and they go over the history of Mac and Jack and you get to ask a bunch of questions. They dont have a serving license so dont except to go there and drink alot. They do growler fills and usually have a beer on tap that is an experimental which can be surprising good at times.

AWESOME beer! Super small yet awesome brewery! I can’t believe this brewery serves so many of the locations in the Seattle area! I don’t think I’ve been to a beer serving location in the surrounding areas that don’t serve Mac & Jack’s!
The brewery tours are so fun and let you go with an awesome parting gift of a Mac & Jack’s beer glass!
Growlers are a good price! Can’t wait to visit the brewery when I’m in Wa again!

As a homebrewing fanatic, this was quite the inspirational experience. If you are looking for fine dining, or dining at all, it’s not happening here. If you are looking drink some free beer, walk away with free pint glasses, and see the guts of a really good brewery, you’re on the money at Mac n Jacks
And it’s a free Brewery tour. I recommend paring the trip with an event at Mary Moore park.

We stopped in while in the area, thought we would have a tasting. They had a free tour going on, but I didn’t feel like waiting there for 45 minutes. (They do them every weekend at 1 and 3). At the end of the tour you get a free tasting. We opted to skip the tour and just have a few samples (they are free even if you don’t take the tour). We thought we would wait and bring our «brew-​hoppin’ friends»!
I use to like Mac & Jacks until we started hitting up all these breweries… now I feel like a beer snob. I hated the 2 ton IPA, too hoppy and bitter beer face for me!
But the great thing about this place, hence the 4 star review; The BEER guy knew a lot. He shared with us how to make our own Keg-​erator!
And not to mention their retail shop has a lot of fun things for the BEER lover in your life! T-​shirts, posters, glasses, sweatshirts, coasters, growlers… I love kitchy souvenirs!

Great tour. Our docent was really knowledgeable. He fielded the questions from a spirited group of visitors with great excitement. We got to sample 4 of the 5 offerings they have. We left with a nice buzz and a logo beer glass.
The place is a bit hard to find, tucked away in a business park. Tour was over in less than 30 minutes.
They distribute, draft only, in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. So for me, I’m out of luck. I’ll have an African IPA on my next visit to Seattle.
I’ve toured many breweries of all sizes, this ranks right up there.

The Mac & Jack’s brew tour is now conducted on Saturdays AND Sundays at 1pm AND 3pm. Yay for options!
I brought my out of towner here a few weekends ago. How the tour goes definitely depends on who is giving it. It was structured differently than a few years ago. But no complaints. We both enjoyed ourselves and of course loved sampling the wares. My friend added some fun facts to his trivia knowledge base. I have another M&J pint glass and he brought some PNW — wear back to the Midwest.
Still a little difficult to find. Still FREE.
A must do if you live here or are visiting and love beer.
