Asaka Sushi & Grill

Happy hour is definitely the best time to go. My server Jennifer made the experience everything I dreamed about and more. She was very attentive and hilarious! I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard hahaha I was crying she really made me feel at home. I love their sushi this place is a must try for sure.

Leo was such a sweetheart, he let us sample the pink sake (dont remember the name, but it had a sweet taste and went down very smoothly).
I’m only giving 4 stars because the busser made a racist comment «no carne asada today?»
I don’t know what he meant by that but it was uncalled for, given yes I am Hispanic but don’t event eat red meat…

I was here with some friends last week. We got seated quickly, they took our order quickly and everything went smoothly. We got our appetizers, I got the gyoza that were really nice and tasty.
While everyone else was getting their main course a friend of mine and I had not gotten our food yet, we just assumed that there was a delay and didn’t think more about it. As everyone at our table was slowly starting to finish their food we had to ask the waiter, there had been some kind of mixup or something. I didn’t like how he was speaking to my friend, it sounded like he was speaking down on him and blaming us for the indecent which I don’t understand seeing how he had messed up and not us and we also asked in a polite manner so not like we were rude.
Eventually we got our food. I got the chicken udon and it was very tasty. All in all I’ll still give this place a four because the food was tasty, the place looked nice and we all had a good time.

We were all tired of unpacking and wanted dinner.
Placed an order for pickup.
They forgot to add wasabi in one of the trays.
Sushi was ok.
Will be back.

Love the reverse happy hour (9:30pm-12mid) on sushi and drinks. However, they are a little lax on the service. Maybe because it’s late and they get a more rowdy crowd.

Their happy hour thing is absolutely perfect in every way apart from taking forever. I’m literally the only party in the restaurant and I’ve waited close to half an hour for a single crunchy roll!

The best sushi spot in history ever of all time. Ok I was really hungry and the chef Dion made it worth stopping there. So friendly and fun. They actually talked to me. Usually sushi places just look down at their knives and occasionally glare at me and say some kind of growl under their breath. But not this place! Fun times with great friends!!! I’ll go there a lot more.

Dion was not only the sexiest sushi chef I have ever seen but was totally awesome and efficient. Rock on Dion!

Visited on a Sunday night since our first choice restaurant down the street had too long of a wait. Service was fine, wait time for food was acceptable. The food quality however was pretty bad. The only food item we ordered that was good was the dynamite sushi roll. Everything else was terrible.
First was the salad… drenched in dressing. Next, the salmon sushi had too much vinegar in the rice… not sure how you can mess that up. The BBQ beef ribs tasted like it was cooked in yesterday, put in the fridge, and reheated in a microwave oven. The chicken teriyaki tasted the same… very dry and tough.
Never seen a Japanese restaurant mess up food like this. Perhaps the sushi rolls are the only good items… maybe safer to just stick with that at this restaurant.

Great food, which makes up for the service. They are nice but just don’t come by to often.

Came here later than normal dinner hour during a weekday. There were only 2 other tables of people eating there at the time. We ordered 3 specialty rolls and some yellowtail. Everything was really good. It was some of the best sushi I have ever had! The waiter didn’t seem to come by too often to see if we needed anything or to refill our water, which was kinda a bummer. It had nice booths inside and cute atmosphere. I would definitely come back!

This is one of my favorite sushi places in the South Bay. The sushi burrito is amazing, a little small but so tasty. I also love the Roll Combo… it’s a great value at $ 10.95. We never have to wait for a table here… plenty of seating indoors and outside. The only reason for the 4 star rating is that the service is a little slow and not really personable. But overall, I highly recommend this spot!

This review is strictly about the food. Seafood Udon — LARGE bowl of piping hot udon with copious amounts of baby scallops, mushrooms, etc in a savory soy sauce based broth that is happily *not* too salty like many Japanese restaurants.
I would come back here for udon soup and Happy Hour.

Prior to just a few months ago I never liked sushi. Tried it all over the world, even in Japan. Now that I am a consumer I love stopping in to Asaka for sushi. The staff is friendly but let’s you chat amongst your group with minimal interruption. The sushi can sometimes take a while to come out so I would advise you to order multiple items at a time. The wait can sometimes pick up on a weekend night during happy our. Great place to go with a large group and the patio seating is ideal for warm evenings.
Additionally you can order food over the phone and pick it up with ease.

Very mediocre sushi. Wouldn’t ever come back. Spencer, Ryan and myself came for an early dinner and we ordered a lot of stuff. Best thing was a bottle of really expensive cold sake and the salmon skin salad. Everything else was ok. Actually, the best thing is the view of the California Coast. This alone may ’cause me to return, but next time I’m eating before I get here and I’m only ordering sake.

After standing outside another sushi restaurant down the street for a few minutes, and then deciding the wait was too long, we walked over to Asaka to give it a try. I’ll give a play-​by-​play for the evening.
The restaurant was nearly empty, but we waited by the door because the sign said, «Please wait to be seated.» So we did. Didn’t take long before we were met, and instructed to sit anywhere. We should have chosen a table outside if only to avoid the smooth jazz music. (Sidenote: what makes a musician pursue a career in smooth jazz? I mean really?)
A pitcher of Asahi was very reasonably priced. And we ordered a few appetizers. Those took about 20 minutes to arrive. But there was beer, so no worries! We ordered our main meals also. Sashimi for me and my wife. Specialty rolls for our partners in crime. That took another 25-​ish minutes to arrive. The food was fine, but the wait was seriously long. Especially considering there were so few people in the restaurant.
The night was becoming absurd. An extra order of albacore barely made it to the table before our check. My bowl of rice barely made it before we walked out the door. And as a parting gift, our refills of water turned out to be refills of watered down iced tea.
All in all, we had a great time laughing at how unbelievably wrong the night became. It’s like watching a really bad movie that you can’t help but laugh at. Don’t aim to come here, but if you end up here anyway, try and have a good time.

Average sushi place. Fast service, nice atmosphere. The tuna poki salad with ponzu sauce was pretty good.

Service is not good in the evenings. Maybe it’s because the wait staff wants to go home, so they neglect the customers. I think they forget that they are working for tips. It’s more than just placing an order.
Also, they raised their prices, which I don’t think is justifiable considering the quality of food.
The location is awesome, but the place is never busy for obvious reasons. Every little aspect of a restaurant determines its popularity/​success. The only thing consistent about this place is its inconsistency.

Debating on how to rate our experience. We love that we have a Sushi spot less than a block from our house so we can just walk over. We popped in last evening, Sunday at 830pm, they close at 930pm on Sunday.
This is more about the Service, than the food (which is nice and consistent).
I did not get the name of the female server we had, but she was rude, unhelpful and argumentative… as I have read in other reviews.
A table of 4, we ordered the Sushi Deluxe Sample Platter, 10 pc assorted fresh Sushi Nigiri– one of the 10 was an omelet/​egg, we asked to have it switched after being argued with by the server over the wording of the menu, they brought out a Salmon Nigiri, to switch it. We also ordered several cut rolls and our friend ordered a 2^nd entre.
Prior to this, our entre, the Unagi Donburi eel, tasty, but it comes with Salad and Soup, we had to ask for this, remind the server that we ordered 2 entres, and we got our Miso Soup, but no Salad.
We were all clearly ordering separate, and I ordered the Avocado rolls, also nice, but plated with the other sushi, I am clearly pregnant and cant have raw fish etc. I let this go.
Upon leaving, it is always fun to try to separate the bill between several people.
As a former server, it is something you just offer, and it gets you a better tip if we aren’t all breaking out our cell phones to use the calculator app. Yes, we could have just asked for separate bills, but I still like our needs to be anticipated by the server. Its just part of reading people. A pregnant woman and her guy, and 2 other single guys… She even came by twice while we were still trying to sort out the credit cards.
While the whole time were there, we had to wave her over to get her attention for water, more wasabi and ginger, to add to our order, which we gave up on…
Like the Soup Nazi on the Seinfeld episode, we will be back, if only for the easy convenient food, but not for the service. We will just come to terms that we will have to ask for absolutely everything we need, and not rely on the server to think for us.
