I have worked in the Health club field for 25+ years in just about every possible area in the club business. For 9 years I was the Owner/​GM of SportCenter Fitness a large club located in King Harbor in Redondo Beach. After buying SportCenter we were able to transform it from an unsuccessful Business to a successful award winning club in which we were able to positively impact many lives. I sold SportCenter to Spectrum clubs several years ago & was looking for the right club situation when I found Riviera Fitness Club. Riviera Ftness has also been named as one of the top Boutique clubs in L.A. County by Los Angeles Magazine. One of the reasons for our success is because we make everyone feel like family. The ability to do that only happens with an Owner operator who is on site managing the club on a daily basis. They just canceled all evening classes. The only time my husband and I used this gym is for spin at night. The other 5 – 6 people in our class will not be happy either. I would not join the gym for more than month to month as you don’t know how long they will stay open.

I recently left this gym for another, but would overall give it a good rating. It is much more down to earth and less hectic than gyms like Spectrum and 24 Hour. The staff are very nice, mgmt is very kind and helpful always. Equipment is new, views are nice.
The only downside is that some of the trainers (not all, but a few) keep bugging you to sign up for personal training, even after you’ve said no. Maybe I am picky, but I don’t like having someone walk up and interrupt my workouts for 10 – 20 minutes, pressuring me to sign up, when I’ve never asked anything about it, have never met them, and just come in to do my own thing. This was the main reason why I left. Other than that, it is a good gym and I recommend.

Quite possibly the best-​spent portion of my pay check each month. It’s almost like someone forgot to tell Riv Fit that it’s a gym — it doesn’t smell or sound like one! Truly is amazing to work out and not have a bunch of creepy dudes watching me run. ALSO is SOOOOOOO wonderful that there are NO naked ladies in the sauna (they should get 5 stars for that alone — sorry ladies I’ve got the same parts I just don’t want to see yours!) The staff is very friendly — and they are always cleaning, and the owner is always there, which is great. I’m very happy that I found them. Oh — and though I don’t need a trainer I did notice that they are quite hot!

I had a similar experience to many of the other reviewers with management when trying to cancel my membership. They give you the run around so that you wind up paying for two or three months extra at the end. On top of that, the manager/​owner was ready to fight me over it!

I just did a 3 day trial for this gym and decided not to sign up for a membership. The staff was really friendly and they had my pass setup for me when I arrived. The facilities were nice and clean, definitely better than some of the other gyms I’ve been to. They provide towels, shampoo, conditioner and body wash= huge plus! I went on a Friday night and it was not busy at all, so there were no issues waiting for a machine. CONS: parking stinks. And the biggest complaint for me is the treadmills being automatically programmed to end after 20 minutes of running. I’m an avid runner so i completely wrote off this gym after that. Even the busier gyms have the timers set for 30 minutes, which I think sucks but at least it’s more reasonable for the average runner. A gym that doesn’t have a crowding issue shouldn’t be setting timers on their machine for a ridiculous 20 minutes. Other than that, I thought everything else was nice, just personally not going to work for me.

I’m loving this place. I have had to change gyms to find one close to work that I could shower at and not be grossed out, not an easy task, but I found it :). Love the size and equipment. I can get in do a good work out without feeling crowded or rushed. I think I am even going to try the Zumba class wish me luck ill be the one in the back that looks like she doesn’t know what she is doing lol

I’m giving this place one star for cleanliness, but that’s it! The people here are so rude and the owner/​manager is even worse! No one here is friendly or cares about customer service. I don’t think this place will last very long. It is also so freaking small with no pool or jacuzzi. It is definitely not worth the money! Run on the beach or ride a bike. It is way better and free!

This place has a space problem, compounded with a trainer problem. With so little room to work out, the customer/​trainer pairs (some times threesomes) means there’s lines to get to some machines, and little elbow room (awkward arm extensions). Watching a trainer led threesome monopolize three stations at a time circuit training is the most frustrating thing I’ve dealt with at a gym (and a super first world problem that I’m ashamed to admit having felt, but still. STILL)
No pool and no boxing equipment to boot!
That being said, the staff is nice and the place is clean.

I come here Sundays as part of a Herbalife fit club group. We meet at 9am at the beach and do group exercises. Afterwards we meet here and drink shakes while talking about our fitness goals. The Riviera is nice enough to give us their upstairs balcony patio to use and it’s a lovely gym. Very clean, modern wood and industrial high ceiling space. Equipment is new and looks clean. Their bathrooms are my favorite, they have a private toilet with shower and sink, I feel very luxurious in there lol.
Love the space, lots of cute girls, can’t say enough about this place, it’s great.

When I was moving to Redondo Beach I had to start the search for a new gym. In SD, I was a no-​frills value guy when it comes to gyms. I loved my Encinitas YMCA. But I have done the 24hr/​LA Fitness thing is the past and I was content.
That changed when I moved up here. There are just too many damn people, so corporate gyms are overused, under-​cleaned, and generally fairly disgusting. On the other hand, nicer facilities cost an arm and a leg (a’la Equinox) and I am not pouring that much of my hard earned money into a damn gym. So the search was on…
I saw Riviera on Unilocal.Reading the reviews, I noticed that those giving it a bad rating were complaining about the contract that they were in, and now that they were leaving, they wanted to get out of it. People, when you sign a contract, read it, understand it, then honor it. It’s not too difficult. And if you can’t, then deal with the fiscal consequences. Very, very simple.
So this is a review of the gym itself. My first impressions (which have lasted for 2 months were two fold: what a nice, clean facility that has everything I need to work out with some luxuries (the showers/​lockers/​sauna are spa-​like).
Second, where the hell are all the people? If it’s 6pm and there are 20 people working out, that is unusually «crowded.» Look, I definitely don’t like crowds, but this place needs some energy… there is something about having SOME young, fit, attractive people working out around you for motivation! Regarding this point, I am half joking…
The price is right too. I did a prepaid yr membership that nets you two months free, and I chose the off hours option (in after 9am and before 4:30pm) and it comes out to about $ 65/​month. This also includes workout towels and shower towels which is great b/​c I can’t tell you how many times I used to forget these items.
So, in summation: affordable, beautifully appointed, lots of good equipment, and never crowded. Hits all the notes of what a good gym should be!

I forgot to update this review when I left Riviera Fitness Club, better late than never I guess. There was a management shakeup. The friendly, familiar faces were no longer there. I moved my office to a less convenient area (I used to be directly upstairs). The attention to customer service that was so good in the beginning began to suffer. I found more convenient gym at ¼ the cost. So I moved over to that gym. I wish RivFit the best of luck, but it just wasn’t earning the premium membership fee any longer.

Be very careful if you decide to join this club. Read ALL the fine print, get photocopies of the paperwork and then make sure the copies are accurate, then plan on carefully scrutinizing and auditing your monthly bank statements. I have had several major disagreements with Michael Marinelli, the owner /​manager. He is not a nice dude. If you are into abuse, you will love this club and Michael. Riviera Fitness Club is like the Hotel California… you can check out, but you can never leave. (with your deposit back.)

The gym itself isn’t bad– I love the locker room, showers, etc. Also like the equipment and cleanliness but none of this can make up for the rudeness of the employees. There is one young girl who is very nice but beside her, the rest of them are horrible! The owners (or managers or whatever) seem creepy and when my husband and I decided to terminate our membership they were SO extremely rude that I can hardly believe they are still in business! We wanted to join here for the small gym feeling but after this experience, I would rather a larger, more corporate feel. Really bad experience!!!

Love this Gym! Who can really say that about the place where most of the populous dread making an appearance?
The cleanliness is unmatched, amenities unsurpassed, and with a staff that is more than willing to accommodate.
This gym is a true example as to how a gym, or small business for that matter, can and should be run.
I know for a fact that if I weren’t a member at this gym I wouldn’t have met my fitness goals as soon as I have; I find it much easier to stay motivated and look forward to working out on a day to day basis.

Unsanitary men’s locker rooms and impolite staff has soured my experience here.
They’ll greet you with a smile when you are coming in just to work out, but if you have any questions or concerns about the condition of the place, the terms of your contract, or any other substantial matter, they treat you like an adversary.
If you like to be unappreciated and disregarded, Riviera is your gym.
It’s unfortunate that there are no other choices of gyms around here (aside from 24 Hour Fitness, but who wants to go there? I mean, that’s why you join a boutique gym in the first place.)
The sad thing is, I think the people at Riviera know this, and it is reflected in their substandard customer service and shoddy upkeep.

I have belonged to many gyms in my lifetime and none have made me feel as comfortable as this one. I am not a body builder and felt like a fish out of water when I belonged to Golds. In the really large gyms (Sports Club LA) they are so large that I was not sure where to start on the machines and could not find the help I needed when I did not know how to use the equipment.
When I started going to Riviera a year ago I weighed 240 pounds. Since working out at Riviera I have lost 85 pounds. I work out almost everyday and often see the same members which is always accompanied with a smile. The gym members are friendly and the staff is great.
This club is immaculate. All the equipment works and I never have to wait for any machines. The view from the second floor where the cardio machines are located is great. You can watch the world go bye as they buzz down Pacific Coast Highway. After my workout I always go sit on the lovely teak furniture located on the deck to just allow my body to cool down. I think this is a nice touch after a real tough cardio workout. You can sit there cooling down while having the ocean breeze in your face.
I cannot say enough about the owner Brent who is a very hands on owner and always lend instructions or guidance on your workout. He is there day and night if I did not know better one would think he lives there, but this is not uncommon for a business owner.
If you are in the market for a gym I would not skip checking this one out. It is state of the art gym without the crowds.
