History

Established in 1982.

The Art Dept. was started on April 20th, 1982 in a garage in Redondo Beach. We moved into our first retail location on PCH in November that same year. Then in 1985, we moved to our current location on 182nd St.

The Art Department was created to offer high quality custom screen printing to local businesses and individuals who want to promote their companies or events. Since then, we’ve added advertising products & full color printing. We’ve printed stadium cushions for the Summer Olympics, Embroidered caps for Greg Norman and printed Yellow page books covers for photo shoots just to name a few. We have worked with Movie Studios, Large and small corporations and businesses, Cities, Schools, and the the US government.

Business Owner

Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, I always knew I would be self employed. I worked for my step father in his machine shop for several years but I knew that was not the type of business I wanted to be in.

I’m an artistic type and in high school, I was introduced to graphic design. In my early years, I worked for several graphics companies but it wasn’t until I worked for a large resort wear manufacturer that I found what I wanted to do. So with $ 1200 in the bank and a bunch of home built equipment, I started The Art Dept. on April 20th, 1982.

TAD is such a great place to make shirts for anything. I needed long sleeve shirts for a school club photo and Phil came through fast and my order of 75 shirts came in no more than a week later! They were cheap and made of good material, too!

The Art Depot is a life saver… I needed T-​Shirts for a school activity and I fell for a online scam. I found out a few days before I needed the shirts and called these folks almost in tears. They immediately got me set up, they not only had my shirts done on-​time with limited time they were very well done. The guys at the Art Depot were incredible and super friendly I recommend them when ever I get a chance.

Last minute decision to have Teddy Bear Academy logo shirts printed for our 2015 Graduates.
Brought shirts in on Monday June 1st and picked them up on Thursday morning June 4th.
I was extremely pleased with the outcome! How well the work was done! And in such short time!

We printed our team t-​shirt here and it was a nightmare! Items that was show on their online website, they can’t seem to locate the items or figure out which is which. In one case, the Art Department went ahead and made an executive decision and printed on the wrong items without consulting us.
The order was placed, weeks have passed; multiple emails and phone calls to the store and no response! A month and a half later, finally got a hold of someone and they said, «Oh, yea, your order has been ready for a few weeks». So how come no one called to notified us? We have emailed, we have called and left voicemail, how are we suppose to find out an order is ready to pick up?
Even though prices is slightly lower here, but the amount of trouble we went through to finalize the items were not worth the time. There is something broken with their process.

This place is amazing! I was in a crunch to have some last minute business cards made for a portfolio show that was happening in less than two weeks.
Phil the owner, put together the most beautiful cards I have ever seen. They were glossy double sided with six food photos cascading down one side, which I’m sure was a challenge to make sure they were clear, and big enough to see.
The front of the card was absolutely gorgeous, with colorful butterfly pasta and Phil used his artsy talents to personalize the wording, by putting a little butterfly over the «i». When Phil printed out a sample, I had an OMG! moment for sure. I ordered 500 business cards and an extra 250 postcard size for presentation, which to my surprise was less than $ 100.00.
The cards were ready ahead of schedule! When I arrived to pick them up, I was floored at how beautiful they came out and to my surprise, Phil threw in an extra 500 cards as a graduation gift!
I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am to The Art Department. It was a pleasure doing business with Phil. He has wonderful ideas and creativity that will knock your socks off!
Needless to say, I received an «A» for the portfolio show and my business cards were taken by all that past my table. Horray! And my Executive Chef classified them as «stunning». And he seldom gives out compliments.

I created a design for our Family Reunion online using another online company’s website, with specific lettering, graphics and special requests. but their pricing was high. I searched locally in the Southbay area and found several T-​shirt printers online. Sent emails out and Phil responded. Sent him my designs and corresponded several times trying to finalize the design with family. It took several weeks before I got back to Phil.
Finally made the order for 66 T-​shirts with 5 different colors, and different names on the front. The darker shirts with white lettering instead of black. Discussing things with Phil on options for other shirt colors just in case. 10 days the order was ready and Phil even corresponded with me while he was on vacation insuring that no mistakes were made in the sizes and spelling.
Note:
The Art Dept has their own online design program, but did not find out until searching for local printing businesses. Phil had no problem with adapting to what I had.

the owner, Phil, is always accomodating, honest and helpful.
He tells it like it is and recommends products based on many years of working with his products and vendors.
He is fast, but his products last. You can re-​order a certain product without a setup fee within 12 months of your last order.
You can find a guy who can do it for $ 8/​shirt, but you know what? Your going to get a $ 1 value shirt that fades and peels within 3 months.
Phil’s stuff lasts years and that quality is worth any cost.

I contacted The Art Department for a simple quote on t-​shirts for my baseball team. They were quick to respond to my email, but turned out to be very unhelpful. We wanted black ringer t’s with a red trim, and they told me this type of shirt doesn’t exist. I responded letting him know that our next choice was black-​on-​black ringer t’s. I found a style that Gildan made that I liked, and they carry that brand, so I figured it wouldn’t be a problem. He responded telling me that I’m basically asking for a black t-​shirt, and I let him know that we were specifically looking for ringer t’s. He responded by letting me know that he couldn’t help me. My opinion … if they are too lazy to look for a shirt … I certainly wouldn’t want them making my t-​shirts.
