This is the place to go for your Smog Inspection. The man has the lowest prices and he is HONEST, Fast and Fair!

If you want your $ 30 smog test to turn into a $ 500 repair, then I’d definitely recommend going to Alan’s. If you’d rather not have to deal with an expensive repair after a routine smog check, then do yourself a favor and «splurge» elsewhere!

when we need to register our car in CA, we had to smog it and being an old german car produced outside of the sunshine state, it didn’t have the emission reduction controls required by the state of California (EGR, and CARB Cat) so we failed on emission and Alan suggested it was the cat, so we changed the cat (at Exhaust works in Belmont, the best exhaust shop in the bay area) and… the car passed with flying colors: 0 emissions — zilche, nada. Alan himself was impressed. Anyhow the place is the cheapest around, its a no frill smog check, do not expect wifi, coffee or magazines… you just want to get it done and move on with your day, thats the place for you, and if the car is younger than 2001 you even get a good deal. All and all a little smog shop, quick and simple.

This was my second visit to Alan Test Smog Check and the first to this new location.
I think the whole smog check thing is kind of a racket, so I always opt for the cheapest test around, as long as it doesn’t make me angry with bad customer service. Alan Test fits the bill. I went mid-​day on a weekday, and only had to wait 5 minutes for another customer’s paperwork to get filed. In and out in probably 10 – 15 minutes, and the whole experience was perfectly pleasant. There’s no fancy waiting room with air conditioning and wi-​fi, but if you can’t go without those things for 10 – 15 minutes, well, then go ahead and pay 3x for your smog check somewhere else.

This is my 5^th visit here. I don’t go anywhere else. Best price, friendly service, fast. What more can you ask for? I miss his dogs and parakeets though. Look for his ad in Craigslist — $ 30 out the door.

Honest, reliable and fast. Look for a coupon on Craigslist (he didn’t even ask for it). This guy was so honest, I gave him an extra $ 20 by mistake and he stopped me as I was driving out of his driveway to give me the $ 20 back. Highly recommended

What a deal! I am usually lazy to write any review and like to write bad reviews too. But this one is an exception. Alan did all the work for me and I only paid $ 30 out the door with a coupon. You may say It is not too easy to find the shop and the facility is very small. But I can say this is the best price you can find in 30 miles radius. My friend did a smog check in his friend’s shop and he had to pay about $ 40 out the door. The price I paid to Alan is the price I pay to my relative.

Have had two smog checks done here in the past month. Both great experiences. Fast service, easy location to get to and prices that can’t be beat. Each time around 15 minutes drive in to pull out.

Told him I saw his ad on Craigslist before he started and he told me my final price would be $ 28. Ten minutes later I was done and on the road — whoop! Great service with a smile (and to be honest, at that price I wouldn’t have cared if he scowled, so the smile is a bonus). Highly recommended!

Fast and friendly. He didn’t pick up his phone right away, so I tried a couple hours later and he said I could stop in anytime.
I dropped my car off at 11:45am and ran over to Hometown Noodle for lunch. When I came back, everything was done and actually there was another customer in his 1 space garage. I actually also forgot my DMV paperwork and he said he didn’t need it, and took the VIN from the car.
There’s no waiting room, or water, or anything really, but he’s fast and cheap! (and look on Craigslist for the coupon!)
Total came out to be $ 28 for smog check + ETF + certificate.

I’ve been going to Alan’s for years. Apparently he moved his shop 1 block over from his original shop 4 months ago. The place isn’t nothing fancy, but he has the best deal on getting a smog check ($ 30 with your copy of the craigslist ad), plus he’s pretty fast, only 15 minutes. Keep up the good work and I’ll be back again when its time to smog check my other cars!

Cheap & Easy Smog Check
Showed the craigslist coupon on my phone, accepted no questions asked. About $ 30 out the door; a great value.
Realize that you are coming here for a cheap smog check; it’s not a beauty parlor, a five star restaurant, or a high-​end dealership with an espresso bar. The ratings account for this reality — if you want free coffee, a waiting area, magazines, free wifi, or a complimentary car wash, go somewhere else because these will not be found here. Then again you’re getting for $ 30 what other shops charge $ 60.
Note that this is a new location, basically a sublet bay in a muffler shop that may be easy to miss. It’s only one bay, so there could be a wait (I had none). There is no waiting area and not much around, so you may want to bring a book or coffee or snack if you’re going to get bored of watching traffic go by or don’t have a smartphone to entertain you.

Please note that Alan moved just a little ways down the block, and changed his phone number. It is no longer 650−364−0538. Now it is 650−298−8398, or 650−368−2741 (I think he has a few). Based on the reviews in Unilocal,and the special Unilocal pricing, i took my Jeep to Alan Test today to get a smog check. I was told there were 4 cars in front of me, and that I needed to come back in an hour and a half. So I took the opportunity to go eat lunch.
When I returned I was told there were four new cars in front of me. His explanation was that I’d have to wait to keep my place in line. It would have been nice if he told me that. When I told him so, he just shrugged and smiled.
Went down El Camino to the Shell station next to Duckies Car Wash and they smogged my Jeep with no wait. As my Jeep was an out of state purchase, and required a smog check before I could register it at the DMV, they took the time to explain the whole DMV + registration process to me.

Back story:
I did some research on Unilocal and chose Alan as his shop is near work. I tried finding the coupon on Craigslist but could not. Decided to pay full price as I need to renew tomorrow.
Stopped by his place at 2:30pm and was seen immediately. The price listed on the shop wall is 59.75 for cars, cash is 58.00. The test took about fifteen minutes. After we finished the transaction (I gave him three twenties, he gave me two dollars) I mentioned «Saw you listed on Unilocal,you have good ratings.»
He looked up from the test station and said, «Yelp? Oh wait, there’s a Unilocal discount.»
He added the discount to the bill, I gave him the two dollars back and he gave me a twenty and ten — than’s correct — the Unilocal price is 30.00.
He gets 4 stars for great service and 1 additional star for offering me a discount after I’ve paid. Classy.

Service was fast, they wanted 58 $ at first but they honored the Unilocal coupon (so I got it for 30 $ flat)
The bad: the guy was gross, I just washed my car and now I have to wash the driver door & the hood and the driver window as he was grabbing the window to close the door. He was making himself food as I walked in and had some all over his mouth and hands
Did get the job done and honored the discount but I still wouldn’t go there

$ 30 to do a smog check on a 2005 Honda Accord was lower than the coupons in the newspaper. You’ll be happy to save $ 50+ for those who have 2 cars.
The small garage space crammed with boxes, cabinets, tables, rice cooker, and Chinese condiments created a Chinatown-​like ambiance. Behind me was the happiest little bird chirpping all the while I was there. Avocado plants line the floor. Morning is the best time to get the smog check done since it’s slower then.
