Milkshake Werks

Damn, they’re closed now. I never even got my punch-​card completely filled out! They were a good spot for ice cream, and my wife loved their shakes (though I say I’ve had better). It was cool that they supported the community (example: girl scout troop comes in to learn about ice cream, makes their own ice cream flavor, and it becomes a limited-​run ice cream flavor you can buy!). Plus, a Unilocal check-​in earned you a free small shake! The people working there were always super friendly.
Oh well; onward and upward!

I’d never been here before, but the Unilocal reviews looked good and I wanted to stop by and try their milkshakes, so we came by on a recent Saturday afternoon. The ice cream is said to be homemade, and the number of flavors are quite impressive. When we had some ice cream samples everything tasted delicious. Milkshakes can be made from any of the ice cream flavors on display, so definite points for the abundant variety of shake possibilities.
Unfortunately the shakes were frankly disappointing. I had the espresso shake (the coffee shakes were sugarfree). The taste wasn’t bad, but there was something wrong with the texture — it just was very thin. Either the wrong ratio of milk to ice cream, or it was left too long in the milkshake blender. My wife’s shake was even worse, with very little flavor it was almost milky in taste. Not only was her shake too thin, it was also not mixed well, so there were glops of ice cream, instead of the desired smooth, thick blend.
I’ve only been here once, and the ice cream is tasty (and is probably the specialty of the shop), so I don’t want to penalize it too much. But these were truly two-​star shakes; perhaps it’s a training issue, but attention needs to be paid here.

This place has been bookmarked a while on my Unilocal account.
I finally went out of my way to get some ice cream/​milk shake there.
My party of 5 and I felt super bad for the one employee serving our hungry appetites.
I opted out of a milkshake, which was what I originally wanted; In lieu, I got myself an ice cream cookie sandwich, and it was just okay. The ice (i forgot what it was but it had cinnamon and caramel?) was delicious, but I can’t say the same for the 2 cookies, which were chocolate and macadamia cookies .
The cookies were sitting in the freezer along with the ice cream. It tasted like a regular Chip Ahoy (okay, maybe slightly better), with premium cookies.
I would have easily given this place 4 stars if the cookies were fresh out of the oven, where you can sink your teeth into the textures, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
Regardless, after the 6^th person was served, I had already devoured my cookie ice cream and was on sugar high for the rest of the afternoon!

Had them twice at Outside Lands, try their strawberry and their cookies and cream milkshakes. I’d love for them to expand to other less known flavors for their booth. Their ice cream is just as great, although their shakes are worth the drive.

It was a warm day today so we walked over to celebrate a birthday.
The owner/​ice-​cream maker (I think her name is Leslie) handed out taste samples generously and discussed the flavors with us. I asked about the difference between coffee and java and finally picked java and nutella. the ice-​cream is smooth and not too sweet but I wanted my java flavor to be more coffee-​y. when I was done with my child size scoop, i scraped the bowl wanting more!
my husband got a kahlua chocolate + vanilla milkshake that was perfect! if i could drink more alcohol I would have picked kahlua chocolate.
yummy ice-​cream, house-​made… friendly owner who seems to enjoy discussing the various flavors she’s created. a fun experience and nice break from work.

If I were to open an ice cream shop in an abandoned Baskin Robbins, it might look something like this. The ice Cream is all made in-​house (you can see their pasteurizer and churn behind the counter), and they do some interesting flavors (not quite as interesting as, say Humphry Slocombe, but after all they are in a strip mall in Redwood Shores, not the Mission)
The results are pretty darn good — flavors were clear though texture and richness was somewhat variable. My companion and I shared a chocolate stout ice cream made with Guinness, and they brought out the special Unilocal flavor from the back when we asked about it.
The folks here are friendly, and generous with the sample spoons. The ice cream is good, fresh and creative. We’ll have to come back soon on a warmer day and try a milkshake, or perhaps pick up one of their ice cream cakes.

Thank you, Leslie for giving my Daughter and I a private ice cream lesson! Due to the fact that I couldn’t make it to the field trip, I contacted Leslie to see if she can arrange a little something for us since I love the ice cream and the many things I bought on my initial visit a few months back.
My Daughter and Leslie’s Daughter pretty much did the whole thing. they picked the flavor and the toppings to go in it. They both decided on: chocolate ice cream, marshmallows blended in the ice cream along w/​caramel drizzle and chocolate chips. During the midst of the entire process whilst Leslie explained to us the basics of ice cream making. I was in awe.
Leslie is very knowledgeable and based upon her ice cream making techniques and methods, it is no wonder why her ice cream is so rich and smooth, not to mention thick, too!
In the end we all shared a great experience, a mini ice cream social, both girls drew pictures for one another, and Leslie was nice enough to pack us 1 pint of the girls’ creation.
Again– this place, the ambiance, environment, service, thoroughness, product (taste/​quality/​presentation). 5 million stars por favor!

Pretty solid homemade ice cream, I like the consistency of this ice cream. Had the Raspberry chocolate, tasted very dark chocolatty, mmmmm, truffle, double mmmmm!!! The single serving was a bit much for me, but I’m sure no one will complain about a big serving.
Also had the Devil’s Canyon root beer on tap, Belmont represent! Very good, served room temp, not too sweet. I will definitely be back for an ice cream cake or milkshake.

5 stars for their ice cream cake, especially the Go Giants flavor with the chocolate brownie cake on the bottom.
I purchased 2 Groupons for ice cream cakes here and both times they did an excellent job– no skimping on the toppings/​decorations even though I was using a Groupon. Their staff is super friendly, and are thorough when you call in to place the order. They will also give you flavor recommendations, so you don’t have to be shy about asking what they have! The large ice cream cake really does feed a TON of people, so I would recommend the small for a group of 10 or so. I will definitely be back for more ice cream cake from Milkshake Werks!

Like other reviewers, I had my first taste of Milkshake Werks at the Unilocal Jorts Jam back in the fall. I happened to be near Redwood Shores and wanted some ice cream so I headed over. I’ve never been to that shopping center and it was dark, so it took me a while to find their exact location since their lighted sign wasn’t on.
When I finally made it, I was greeted with a large selection of delicious-​looking frozen goodies! I didnt’ like the chalkboard menus because they were hard to read, so I went by the flavor name signs in the freezers for reference. The young man behind the counter was very friendly and the owner was in the background cleaning up.
I REALLY wanted the Banana Brown Sugar Toffee. My mouth waters just thinking about it. But of course they were out. I settled for a single Butter Pecan scoop in a sugar cone. My son ordered a cookies and cream shake. My single scoop was pretty small, but the texture was soft and creamy and it tasted divine — lots of pecans but not syrupy sweet. My son enjoyed his shake. Out the door, I spent about $ 6 — not too bad.
If I’m in the area, I’ll definitely stop by again — they better have the Banana Brown Sugar Toffee!

I stopped by here on my way to visit my friends in Redwood Shores. I’ve always loved milkshakes but the milkshake I had here was not as good as I expected. I’ve gotten milkshakes before at Willow Glen Frozen Yogurt and the shake they gave me was thick… like it took a few inhaling breaths to get the liquid through the straw. The mint chocolate cookie milkshake that I got that day tasted maybe a bit too liquid and diluted.
I have to give it up to them for having a large variety of flavors including some very interesting holiday seasonal flavors. The inside seems a bit cramped in terms of seating so I’m not likely to hang around here if I do stop by.
I may likely come back but will make sure to ask if I get a thicker, more concentrated shake.

The best ice cream milkshake I’ve had in my life!!! Delicious vegan ice cream as well :) I recommend the chocolate chocolate –chip. You can’t beat homemade ice cream!
4 stars because the place is uninviting. Totally not a homey place where you’d want to sit down and have your ice cream. Everything is metal-​looking and not decorative whatsoever. I usually take my ice cream outside.

It was a warm, sunny day in the Peninsula yesterday so I decided to stop by Milkshake Werks and have a scoop or two of ice cream. OMG! So many delicious flavors to choose from. Sure, they have the standard vanilla and strawberry (which is still my fave), but they also have «peanut butter blast», «everything chocolate», «black and white» — just to name a few!
I’ve mentioned this before, but the portions here are quite generous. Two scoops is more than enough for this girl. And quite frankly, the ice cream here is so good that I have no desire to put it into a milkshake. But if you do choose to go that way, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Or create your own.
One quick side note: there’s a sign in the shop that tells you where Milkshake Werks gets their ingredients from — mostly from places up in North Bay. I love that they keep it local :)

I experienced their ice cream at the Unilocal event. I got to try their nutella and mint chip flavors. MmmmmmMM~ I went with the nutella in the end. Oh man, it was so nutella-​y and rich. I liked the cookie on top, soft and chewy. They do ice cream right and cookies too.

I never liked any places in this strip mall really, and I go there for health care, Jamba Juice and the occasional bagel.
Except when the mister craved a milkshake and insisted we try this place. It’s got a very mom-​and-​pop shop feel to it even though it’s quite new, and the ice cream felt homemade. Well, that’s because it is. We even talked to a girl who made the ice cream there.
That makes it awesome. Ice cream from the back of the shop instead of from a truck. Tastes good too.
They also have Devil’s Canyon root beer on tap. Beats the canned stuff by a long way.

Pretty good but not fabulous, I expected more.
My sister and I drove here because she raved about their creative milkshakes and flavors, and she was right.
They have a huge selection ranging from vegan to non-​fat flavors like pistachio, coconut, marzipan, and many others.
First off, the man working there seemed to be having an off-​day, which is understandable. I work with people and I understand people have bad days. However, this does not mean that it is appropriate to have a terrible attitude and slam the freezer doors etc. It’s okay though, I forgive you.
I tried the nutella but was disappointed because it tasted like warm chocolate mousse, uhm isn’t it supposed to be nutella ice cream?! I also tried the marzipan because I love princess cake. I was yummy but tasted and had the consistency of too much marzipan, I’d still dig my spoon into it though.
Lastly, I tasted the red raspberry non-​fat. MMMM it’s so good. It has a sherbert-​y texture and its icy which I enjoy, although it may not be up to par for everyone. It has a good flavor and has flecks of the fruit in it and is also kind of tangy. I’d definitely go back just for that.

A co-​worker found Milkshake Werks via Unilocal.So I went along to check it out. Well, I’ll put this way, short & sweet (no pun intended), it was the best milkshake I’ve had in many years. I can safely say this because I live in the City and frequent Mitchell’s, Bi-​Right Creamery, Humphry Slocombe and Polly Ann’s.
I had a Dulce de Leche & Coffee ice cream with soy shake. Why soy for me on this time around? Well, Dulce de Leche is a super sweet ice cream, actually over sweet, and the coffee ice cream has a bit of that coffee bitterness. Both these back-​end flavors are off-​set by the slightly sour flavor of the soy milk. Combining all of these tongue twisting flavors made for an amazing shake!
The secret to Milkshake Werks are their blenders. They use a high-​end, high velocity, industrial mixer called Blend-​Tec. These are the same blenders found at Jamba Juice. This special blender makes the milkshakes super smooth, consistent through out silky and creamy without any trace of ice particles.

Shouldn’t they call themselves Milcheshakewerks? Or even Eisfabrik?
The name, the signage, the ambiance were all slightly off. Entering the place, it takes a while to get oriented. Is the focus on a choice selection of house-​made ice cream or a creative selection of milk shakes? Are they trying to be traditional or creative? The board behind the counter was hard to read and not helpful in sorting the place out.
I ended up just going with a single scoop of chocolate on a cone. My server really needed to use extra effort to scoop it out. They keep their refrigerators too cold. I’m not sure if it was too hard because it was too cold or because their style of ice cream is rather dense.
No point in coming back with Cowabunga a stone’s throw away.
