I love trying new things, flavors, and especially new styles of food. Pastryland is not your typical American pastry shop, it is actually Sri Lankan style savory pockets of goodness. When you go ask the extremely friendly owner about each type and he will gladly walk you through what to try if it is your first time. A can’t miss is the Chicken Pocket and if you want a larger meal ask about the Lamprais. Now go on and try something new!

A few weeks ago, my mom and I stopped in Fri night right before they closed. The owners are a husband and wife team. The husband was there and he was just the nicest man and kept giving us free samples to try. And he was so proud of the foods and the fact that his wife makes everything by hand in the kitchen. As it was near closing, the cases were almost empty, but we were able to try their eclairs, iced coffee and a small, quiche style pasty that had an almond filling. The eclairs were divine. Pure heaven. The cream filling in the middle tasted like actual creamy filling, not a lard/sugar mix. They have a vanilla cream filling and a chocolate one. The chocolate one tastes like a really cold, creamy chocolate mousse. It is one of the best pastries I have ever had. My mom loved the iced coffee. I don’t like coffee, so I am just taking her word on it. The husband told us the wife makes the coffee also. We went back on Saturday afternoon to try some of the stuff they were out of the night before. Because in addition to pastries, they also do hot rolls. Phyllo pockets stuffed with various ingredients. The bacon and egg roll was easily our favorite. It is half a hard boiled egg with a half slice of bacon wrapped around it. And that is encased in a lovely, flaky, non greasy phyllo. Their pastries and pockets seem to range in price from 75 cents to $ 1.50. The pastries are not huge, which I really liked because it enabled me to order and try a few. These are 3 or 4 bite pastries. But those 3 or 4 bites are delightful.

Full disclosure: I did not pay for all the amazing food I enjoyed! But I would pay for it, if that makes any difference =) This place specializes in Sri Lankan style pastries– most of them not sweet. We tried tons of yummies: –Chicken Pocket(2.25): It’s like a portable pot pie filled with chicken and veggies; far more moist than I thought it would be. Tasty, nice flaky pastry. –Bacon and Egg Roll(1.50): This clearly is to cater to the white/non Sri-Lankan populous. I didn’t really think it was good. Fish Pastry(1.00): Not heavy on the fish taste, mixed with some potato. Again, flaky pastry and yummy filling. This tastes a lot like a yummy samosa. –Sausage Roll(1.00): This one is a lot like the Bacon and Egg Roll: White People Alert and, for me, boring. –Mutton Roll(2.00): Doesn’t sound appetizing but it was my 2nd favorite thing. Great flavor, eggroll shape(but not the consistency), and moist! And, the star of the night: –Lamprais(10.00): This is a tasty Sri Lankan adaptation of a Dutch dish where there is rice, meatballs, and a curry mix wrapped in banana leaf and baked. It had a great flavor and a nice warmth, as far as spice goes. These are only available on the weekends, but be sure to get one for sure! We had two sweets: –Baked Cheesecake(1.50): It was ok; I wouldn’t necessarily grab one in the future. –Chocolate Éclair(1.50): Tasty, but I would rather have another Mutton Roll. Great customer service! I certainly hope you seek them out; it’s a great family business with tasty snacks!
