Northern Dutchess Hospital

I broke my tibia and fibula near the ankle on a Thursday Jan 2014 the pain was unbearable !!! They never cat scanned me or took time to review my past allergies that were listed with prior orthopedic records form only 2012 They finally got me a room and made me wait till next day Friday at 7:00 pm to operate. I was hooked up to morphine pump through out the night, that did NOT take pain away. I wanted be moved to a different hospital and told them that, they ignored my request. I couldn’t sleep that night but maybe for hour. The next day the Friday I was waiting in again sooooo much pain, for someone to operate. Was told it’d be around 7:00 pm. It was unacceptable. But of course I was there prisoner had no choice. Come to find out 8 months later there was a break that never was addressed or fixed. And they prescribed by their doctors who work out of there hospital, an antibiotic that if simple review of my past, this antibiotic sent me to ER with deadly symptoms. (swollen up face lips eyes etc had to have ambulance drive me to hospital) I now still 2016 have issues with this ankle, I belive due to incompetent doctors — no CT, & no review of my history of allergies to meds. Their docs In My situation are from orthopedic associates of DUTCHess County. I’ve heard good stuff about this hosp and the orthopedics of Dutchess County. I wouldn’t use this hospital again (no one ever told my why I had to wait over 12 hours for emergency surgery and the orthopedic company is horrible never CT ME and took them 3 months to clear up infection, when staples came out there was a 1″ area that was wide open when they removed staples and left it open, no steri strips nothing. when I urged them that I wanted hyper Baric treatment which is ground breaking. DR sent me to Vasser for a 2^nd option on my infection. He’s words to his assistant is I think they took boot off too early. Finally I had to have another surgery to remove infection May 2014 which at that time I had fallen 2 times and Kingston ER NOTED Each time I had a fracture and 2^nd time a sprain. Even then ortho did not ct me at follow up visit. They could have fixed new break and infection at same time, I’m guessing.. I had to wait 1 more year in PAIN b4 I got another surgery for the break Kingston ER NOTED. Northern Dutchess Hospital should have had me in surgery immediately ! !!!

Second time I’ve been there, never going back. Even if I’m dying! My ulcer may have been bleeding and I was in severe pain, so my roommate drove me to the hospital. The best part was when they needed blood, they had poke and twist the needle in my veins FOUR TIMES in FOUR different areas, two on each arm! I was crying by the third because of their incompetence. Then the nurse as sweet as she was called someone else who also couldn’t get blood out. Finally they were able to manage to take some blood out, another staff member shows up saying that my urine was good enough, they don’t need the blood, at least not for diagnosis which is a great slap in the face. Finally, the following night I was very uncomfortable and had a stabbing pain on my left arm, in the area where they poked around for blood, only to discover a huge bruise that was extremely painful and disgusting to look at considering I have a very important conference to attend not the best thing to have. I feel like I came back home with more pain than I had left with and a heap of new medical bills. Disappointing considering some of the staff is very sweet and friendly but drawing blood is basics.

Ive had nothing but bad experiences at this hospital throughout my pregnancy. I was in the emergency room early on due to bleeding, and the emergency room doctor was very rude, and she was very aggressive when checking me. When it came time to deliver my son at the birthing center in March, I would consider my stay there to be the worse experience of my life. The nurses I had (besides an amazing night nurse named Wendy) were all very rude, condescending (to both me, my boyfriend, and my family visiting) and didn’t seem to know what they were doing. This is my first child, so I have nothing to compare my experience to, but I felt uncomfortable for my entire stay and would not recommend. I had heard nothing but good things and am so so disappointed with my experience.

what a wonderful hospital and EMERGENCY room; I brought in my 95 year old mother for terrible pain and they worried about a heart attack but it turned out to be a kidney stone; Everyone was kind, caring, efficient. I can’t rave enough about the PA on duty but don’t know his name but will! My older daughter wondered, do they know what they’re doing there – since they’re not in NYC and I can say, yes, yes yes. Thank you all; we love all of you!

I had a bad experience about 2 months ago, not diagnosed and by the time evening came around I couldn’t even walk due to cellulitous.
I wrote one poor review and I usually don’t do that NDH has always been my preferred hospital. The head physician of the ER read it and asked what happened and said it would never happen again. He was extremely nice and assured me things would be discussed at a meeting.
Two months later I had a fall and couldn’t walk on my knee. I take oxygen periodically but figured just going to the ER I’d use theirs and then come home. We waited 3 hours, there were people hacking and coughing all over, no masks. My husband looked around for a mask and finally went to the car. There were no rooms in the ER so they put me in a cubbyhole where machines were stored. That was alright, but then they came out with this full leg immobilizer, no x-​rays and sent me home.
I wanted to leave but the head secretary Barbara convinced me to stay. She’s the best thing going in that place. I told her I’d go across the street to the Urgent Care but she convinced me to stay.
I was hoping the head physician would be there since he assured me if I ever came again things would be different. Oh and guess who is sick after sitting for an hour with no mask… yes me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Northern Dutchess Hospital! I will forever sing the praises of this amazing place — I had my daughter here on May 29^th and was in the hospital from 9 am May 28^th to noon on May 31^st. From the first instant, I was checked into my room in the Neugarten birth center that I would stay in throughout labor, delivery and postpartum. This is a big deal because most hospitals don’t allow this which I feel is very inconvenient. My labor was strong and consistent but I was only 3 CM dilated upon admission into the hospital so I was allowed to keep my regular clothes on and walk around outside and all around to progress my labor!
I was also allowed to labor on the exercise ball and in the shower. I could have opted for the tub because no one was in there but I declined because I really didn’t feel like it. A nurse came in around 5 pm and started to push pitocin on me (even though I was looking for a purely natural birth) but thankfully my midwife came in and saved the day. She suggested that they break my bag of waters when I was ready for them to (she didn’t pressure me when, I suggested it!) and once she did, my labor came at full force.
Even at this point, I was allowed to labor however I wanted. No one once pushed pain meds on me once I indicated that I wanted a natural birth from the get-​go, even though I had a horribly long transition and because I didn’t fully dilate (I stalled at 9.5 cm even though I was in transition for almost 2 hours), I actually had to push my daughter more than more women have to (without getting graphic).
Our nurse throughout the labor was AMAZING — her name is Bridget and she deserves whatever accolades NDH offers. She allowed me to push any way I had to, and allowed me to change positions when I just couldn’t push on my back with my legs up (I had pubis symphysis dysfunction which causes intense pain when there is a lot of back pressure). She had me try a bunch of pushing positions instead of trying to force a certain one on me — and thank GOD for the squat bar because without that, I don’t know how I would have pushed her out!
The subsequent 2 day stay of my daughter, hubby and I was great. the food was pretty good through and through — including our special parents dinner the night before we left. We had some good filet mignon that was a nice gesture. My only complaint was that the pediatric NP was pretty rude and pushy when she was basically blaming the fact that I delayed cord clamping for why my daughter had a high bilirubin count. All the other staff was pretty awesome, and it was an experience that made me so thankful that I decided to deliver there.
My OB/​GYN is actually in the hospital as well, as was the physical therapist that I saw in my last trimester for my pubis symphysis dysfunction. It’s a small hospital, but quaint and always brimming with friendly people, unlike what a previous poster had mentioned. I wish hospitals were still always this small — I am not a fan of the mega medical care model.

I had double knee replacement surgery at Northern Dutchess (both at the same time) and I could not have had a better experience. The surgery went great; the care was attentive, professional and superb; the facilities (including food) were much better than expected. Altogether I spent eight days at the hospital, including one day in the ICU unit (mandatory for all double joint replacement procedures) and six days at the acute rehab center. I was expecting it to be pretty yucky: it was just the opposite. Nice people, a fine facility, superb care.
I write this because there are a lot of bad reviews of ND Hospital here on Unilocal and I felt it incumbent upon me to provide an alternative opinion.

Had my son here. I was induced. The nurse on staff upped my pitocin at such a fast rate I had uncontrollable contractions within the hour. My sons heart rate dropped and needless to say I was rushed in for an emergency c-​section. Afterwards they called for an xray and when I asked why i was told «we have a pair of forceps unaccounted for» WHAT??? well luckily they weren’t in me but they did unbelievably charge MY insurance for there mistake. $ 400 for an unnecessary xray. I of course told my insurance company and then called the billing dept at the hospital who tried to feed me a bunch of excuses. I also take my children to pine street pediatrics. have had problems with them too. b

Northern Dutchess is a creepy hospital. I spent roughly 4 days in a row here over the holidays to visit a family member, and every time I felt more and more uneasy. It’s not that it isn’t a welcoming or friendly place. Everyone seemed nice enough. My problem was the serious lack of people I encountered every time I stepped foot inside. There was one person in the security office and believe me, he didn’t even look up when I walked in. I encountered not a single soul while walking through the hallways and taking the elevator up to the second floor. The only nurses I saw were at the nurse’s station on the second floor where I was headed, and I could have just walked by them and they never would have said a word. My impression of hospitals is that they are at least a little more concerned about the people coming through the doors to visit a sick patient. I don’t think I would want to be here-​too unsettling.

One of my favorite hospitals that is nearby to my house (it is a decent distance away from me however, as it is 20 minutes drive away from my house), is this hospital. It’s gotten bigger over the past couple of years. The ER got bigger, and some of the other departments did too. The location of the ambulance drop-​off areas changed. Things with this hospital, is always in a state of changing. (Even the gift shop moved and got bigger-​too bad it’s prices are still the same-​high and outrageously priced.
This hospital however, serves all of the Northern Dutchess Communities of Tivoli, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Staatsburg, Milan, Pine Plains, and several other communities. Most of these communities do not have hospitals nearby (with the exception of this one). They have a few good doctors, as well as other doctors who don’t seem to know what the h*ll they’re doing. Some doctors even charge the patient, not only their ER visit, but as if they were treated by the doctor in his own office. A sign nearby the radiology department even states that this is done on purpose.
Even in radiology, if needbe, you can have a copy of your X-​rays put on a CD to be taken to your doctor. However, prior notice is required for this to be done.
I once feared this hospital would loose patients if they got any bigger, they would start to loose customers, but it doesn’t seem like that is the case. They may have lost a FEW customers, but not as many as I initially feared.
