So far my only interaction with this violin shop has been for a bow rehair. The price was good, the quality of the work is great, and the turnaround was only a few days, even though Duncan said they were pretty busy. I was used to waiting a week or two. I’ve never bought a fiddle; they always just kind of land in my lap. But if I ever do have the money to buy a really nice one, it will probably be from Jay Rury’s shop.

Exceptional services, I went to Jay looking for a violin and his assistant let me try out probably close to 10 different violins but I could not make up my mind. Came back the second time with my violin so that I could have a back to back trial, still the same great service without any pressure. Great pricing on items like strings, stands and other accessories as well. Definitely my go-​to luthier in the DFW area.

Having recently purchased a violin and bow from Jay R. Rury Violins, I couldn’t be happier, and I so appreciate the time, patience, and help which Jay and his associate, Duncan gave me. They allowed me to try out different violins over the course of a few weeks, until I was finally able to make a decision, and I am so very pleased. The whole experience was most satisfying. They are wonderful people to do business with, and I highly recommend them.

I have bought 3 violins for my 11 year old son from Jay Rury’s. The first one I bought I was told to take it and try it out without paying! I thought it was an insane offer. So, I did and as a scatter brainier that I am, I paid 6 months later with numerous calls of my intention to pay, but I was told to not worry. When I finally made it in to pay, Duncan told me he never doubted I’d come back to pay and was so happy to see my smile along with my then 7 year old son. At that moment, I knew I was in the perfect hands. I have found them to be of great quality and reasonably priced. And the best deal out of my purchase has been the relationship of trust both, Jay and Duncan, offer. Anytime, I need accessories or help with tuning or repair, they always greet me with a smile and assist me right then and there with all the patience and dedication of a true string and rare string repair men. Thank you Jay! Thank you Duncan! You make us love music even more!

Unilocal hasn’t let me down! Jay is the owner (with wife), and he’s pretty cool. I needed a bow rehair, and he was able to turn it out in a week (usually a few day turnaround, but it was Christmas). I also needed an E-​string and a folding stand, which he had for cheaper than internet prices. How does that even happen? Whatever, cuz now I know where to go to get the essentials! I’ll be looking for a violin case soon, too, and he had plenty lined up along the wall.

Yesterday was a comedy of catastrophes that will make for an amusing story one day. Since it was just yesterday, the humor of my day has not hit home yet.
Here’s a nutshell of my day:
*took a much needed mental health day off of work
*planned to change cello strings and get a mani/​pedi
*due to the crazy humidity, the joy of putting fresh strings on my cello vanished when the damn soundpost fell requiring a trip to the repair shop (turned the A string peg and my G string unraveled… no jokes here Nickie G.!)
*not two minutes after my cello got jacked up, the ceiling of my garage collapsed onto my car… suck
*as I went upstairs to research how much repairs for the garage would run, I was greeted by a rancid stench… my dog had gotten sick all over the office
The rest of the day was spent recovering from the morning from hell. I went to Jay’s in such a sour mood. He and Duncan, Jay’s assistant, greeted me with familiar smiles and a welcome calm as they repaired my cello. They understood that I was in a hurry, so I was out within a half hour… conversation included. AWESOME!
Jay has been working on my cello since the 80’s. There were no luthiers (string instrument repair folks) in New Orleans, so I used to make the trek to Dallas for my repair and maintenance needs. Once I moved to Dallas, I continued to see Jay as my luthier. He has worked with many of the city’s most notable string players (didja like the pun there?) and is known as a highly trusted string repairmen.
His new shop (well, it is several years old now) is in Richardson, but for many years I made the trek to Oak Cliff for repairs. His new shop is very convenient and much closer to his North Dallas audience. I’m glad to have him so close by… especially with these random emergencies.
Jay also sells instruments and bows. I have had several students buy terrific instruments from him over the years. My current bow was purchased at Jay’s in 1997 after a 10 year quest for the perfect marriage with my cello.
That bow has a saga of its own that Jay helped me through. In 2001, my kitty Paganini (the silver tabby in the pics) decided that my music stand looked like a table. He jumped up, figured out in mid-​air that the stand had no landing area, grabbed the top of the stand, flipped it and sent my bow flying across the studio. It landed on tile. At the time, it seemed OK. A year later, as I’m performing in front of 100 children, my bow snaps at the tip. I cried on the inside as I grabbed my spare bow. When I finished the performance, I bawled for real all the way to Oak Cliff. Jay fixed my bow and you can hardly tell it was ever damaged. Apparently, Paganini’s stunt caused a fracture in the tip and it took a year for it to finally break. My bow lost 80% of its value when it snapped, but it still plays well. Damn cat!
Jay has saved me several times over the years. He is one of the most interesting people you will ever meet and has a keen sense of humor. He is not someone I would ever want to get into a battle of the wit’s with… he would win.
I love his new shop! There are cello bodies (from unplayable instruments) hanging artistically from the ceiling. I have never seen a better use for Engelhardt cellos… except as maybe a planter.

Jay and Duncan made me feel better after my crummy day. Too bad he and Duncan don’t do mani/pedis…that would have capped my already AWESOME experience at Rury Violins!
